Thanks for posting that article man. I'll have to find where to get some of that at around here. I believe there is a Kawi shop around my house someone said carries VP fuel at. Hopefully that have it on hand.

You can also check here for Sunoco race fuels. I've used their Sunoco 110 for years and never had an issue. Maybe someone can correct me but I was always told it was the same as VP110 just a different brand.

Yamalube is inexpensive, and great oil. Got to get it at yami dealer though. 36-1 is how I run it. Always ran pump, just make sure jetted on rich side for pump, and your good. My opinion on mixing good gas with bad gas, is seems like you are making the good gas worse, or bandaiding the bad gas. Your also always running around for both fuels, and if you cant get or run out or whatever, it sucks. I want to buy some like 98 or 100 octane leaded fuel, who makes it?

One way is to look at the plug. If it's black it's too rich, if it's white it's too lean. A nice grey color and you're in there. That won't necessarily help you with pilot vs. main jet specifically, but it's one tool to use. It won't smoke much at all once it's warmed up. There ought to be enough info out there on the YZ that you should be able to know exactly what it should be.

There is a significant difference in how a 2-stroke acts and a 4-stroke. A 2T hits when it get in the power band while a 4T is more of an electric motor feel.

Enjoy!

He offered $500 for it and I didn't want to deal with parting it out or trying to sell it as it was. . . I regret that decision slightly but I just hate dealing with craigslist people.
7000$ to 500$. only a 4 stroke can do that. hahaha.
guy you sold it to did get a good deal though, lot of work ahead of him, but still.

I'm a two stroke noob. Give me a break man. Lol. I always steered clear of digging into the engine on my 450. I've got some buddies that know a few things about two strokes so I hope to start learning how to do just about everything I can myself. That's the biggest reason I made the switch. I wasn't happy about the $1,500 pill I was going to have to swallow when my 4 stroke gave it up.
I did. Tongue

Yeah that was a pretty tough pill to swallow.

Fortunately I was able to wrap up my championship 2 laps before the 450 blew up. I usually only race one race per weekend but due to peer pressure, I decided to race an extra race. I wrapped up my championship on a Saturday and raced again on Sunday and it gave out two laps into that race. Talk about cutting it close.

Sucks about your other bike period. But, that thing looks pretty new. He may have told you a rich mixture to let it break in with more oil to help it lubricate a little better. The problem with running it rich is you will get a slight carbon build up everywhere. It's better to run the mixture that it says on the pre-mix bottle. Those YZ motors are pretty bulletproof though. I would suggest investing in a 9 oz flywheel weight when you get a chance. The best thing is find a good track and do laps. Run through 5 gals of gas and then do again as soon as you can. Nice bike! Congrats!

Unless you want to end up with a blown YZ250, I would run high octane fuel that contains NO ethanol.

Trust me Smile

Nice bike and it looks like you got a good deal too. I have a 2007, love these bikes. I run yamalube at 40:1 with fresh 91 octane and I've never had any problems.

I'll almost indefinitely get a flywheel weight. I want to run a few tanks through it like you suggested to get used to it then start making changes depending on where I'm at.

The fuel is just the first of a LONG line of questions I'll have I'm sure. I've ordered some Windham bend bars, and new springs for the suspension but nothing for the motor yet. Been reading about JD Jet kits, and some of the Reed kits. I think I'll leave that all stock for now and see what I need once I get some seat time on it.

I have been running 93 octane pump gas with Klotz octance boosters in my yz250 and it runs great. No pinging and the power from my bike is instantaneous.

Congrats on the bike! I wouldn't get too caught up on setting the bike up dead perfect and getting the jetting perfectly spot on right away. I would just enjoy the thing for a while and if something starts bugging you, address it. I have always ran my gas at 44:1 or 50:1 and the cylinder always has plenty of oil around it when I pull the top end apart. Good luck on the learning curve, it really isn't as difficult to figure out as people make it seem.

Avoid Maxima-927. It carbons up the silencer packing and is a PITA to clean and repack. Yeah it smells cool but it ain't worth it. Especially if you end up putting on a spark arrestor. 927 will gum that thing up quick.

I tried Maxima KR2. It ran great but was a little spoogy. Didn't seem to burn completely. Switched to Maxima-SuperM and it's great. Runs excellent and burns clean.

Stick to 32:1. That is what Yamaha recommends and what the stock jetting is tuned for. Lots of guys run 40:1 but that will richen up the bike and the jetting will need to be leaned out.

The Sunoco 110 is what we ran with the Motul. Good leaded gas is great for two strokes. We always ran a .030-.050 with a resquish. So it was almost needed. Just because of the increased compression. It is huge improvement at our altitude. My track is exactly 1 mile high.

KTM 250XC for me with Motul 800 Full Synthetic at 50:1

Stock motor should be just fine with pump gas. Start messing with compression / base gaskets, then you may have to bump it up and mix some premium.

Just curious on what cross country series you are running? I've been doing Tccra this past season , some Toro and hope to catch a few Torn next season. I switched to a 2 stroke from a kx250f and it was a good choice in the Texas heat and long races. I did not put in a fly wheel weight but got a rekluse core exp and it is awesome for x country in my opinion.

Don't waste your money on VP. Your bike will run great on 100LL and you'll save $7/gal. With the exception of a small flywheel weight, don't touch the engine because it's damn good right out of the box. Focus on getting the suspension setup

I'm quoting this guy, because he knows his stuff.

I would recommending PM-ing him with any questions.

You're getting true, well tuned experience...I can say, FGR's bikes are the real deal, just beautiful and run amazing.

104 octane, and 40:1 Amsoil Dominator is all I've run for years. It's simply awesome. Also an Iridium plug.

full synthetic pre-mix @ 50:1

this is the end all be all. I'm not going to argue it, or explain it. just fuckin do it. Wink

Castor bean is cool if you care more about the smell of the exhaust (who doesn't love it?) than the life of your motor.

If you ride hard enough to blow out the packing in your silencer regularly, then you should be running full synthetic oil.

I suppose if you don't ride at that level, semi-synthetic at 40:1 is fine, and will be less expensive.

if your a spode, then run whatever the hell you want other than the shit you get at the gas station.

...and nothing will keep the power valves clean other than keeping the bike properly jetted and on the pipe all the time.
