I completely severed mine around 15 years ago, I was 6 months off the bike and 12 month off playing football⚽. To a top class athlete like ET with the best and most upto date medical tech available I don't think it's as bad as many of the vital medical experts are claiming. There's some fucking drama queens around here.

lol at the amount of speculation here from people who have clearly not torn an achilles. I tore mine twice in one year. first time was torn riding. Balls of feet. Came up short. pop!!! Horrible pain. I rode the rest of the day. It was my brake foot so I could function using my heel. First time no surgery...

Safe to say I powerwash the dogshit out of my bikes too. I LOL'd at this pretty hard. As long as it isn't on pencil-point-blow-holes-in-things setting all is fine.

Power wash, then spray mr. clean. Have a beer while you wait a lil then power wash again. Use an air gun to blast it dry. Cleaned bikes like that for 2 decades with no issues whatsoever. I tear bikes down at least 1x yearly to clean/grease everything.

And that’s exactly why it’s important to cancel events, voluntarily isolate yourself, etc. gotta slow the outbreak so the healthcare system doesn’t get overwhelmed with patients who are compromised before the virus hits them.

Posted this in another thread. Read the link. Great info on why its good to be cautious. No need for hysteria, but caution is very warranted. From my exposure to Vital worthwhile threads are quite few and far between. This is a great thread. There is a lot of good info here, especially for engineer/entrepreneur types amongst us. Thanks for sharing!

Years ago I went through the exercise of answering that question. Does it make sense to outsource everything at a higher cost to save money on machinery and time spent making everything, or does it make sense to do this all in-house with huge initial costs but at much higher margins? I quoted out some clamps and pricing came back pretty high, even at high quantities, so my margins would be pretty low, particularly for the investment in inventory. And I looked at what my ROI was on equipment vs paying these higher costs to outsource. Turns out it didn't...

I used to be very much in the camp of "overall it is cheaper to do it all in-house" (which is why I used to design/machine all my own parts and fixtures for prototypes). It got to the point, however, where the opportunity cost was high as it was pulling me away from brain cycles spent on R&D, testing, etc...

Awesome part and GREAT post! As an engineer who has worked in R&D for many years and runs a CNC mill, it is almost always cheaper on a time/material basis for me to send things out, even one-offs. Did you ever get this part quoted by a prototype shop? We often send part overseas, not because it is cheap (it...

Have you ever asked a company for a custom part or a part that they don't already offer for sale? We occasionally get customers asking for things like this, and when I get back to them they're usually shocked at the cost. I wrote up a blog post over the weekend about what it takes to design and manufacture a new part, and why the process is so time consuming and expensive. I used one of our newest products as it started in this exact scenario - our one-piece integrated handguard and steering damper mount top bar clamp. Check it...

I haven't ridden in 6 years. I don't own a bike anymore. I haven't looked at the majority of these magazines since they were published. If they were already gone my life would be just the same as it is now.

I’m pretty glad you’re not within about 6 hours of me. I have a bad habit of keeping and collecting magazines and this certainly isn’t something I’d pass up.
