One of my favorite rides of all time was out of pinenuts endiing up down at Topaz lake and then pirating back up 395 to Gardinerville before the sunset. Pretty epic rock field headin back down the mountain to the 206/395 junction, where we had the bestest and coldest beer I can recall basking in the sun before getting back up the road to the trucks. There were some epic bermed s turns snaking between the piñon pines that was a bit like doing several miles of the s turn at washougal below the big drop off. I was with great friends and it was late spring and it was dirt biking at its very best.

Single track is like ski runs; they run the gamut from black diamond to bunny trails. And even if you get over your head. ( not hard for me to do)., and now matter how miserable you get, in the end after a it you have stories and memories to enjoy.

Maybe it's a western thing, but my reflex is to think cow trailing rather than single track.

I do miss it a lot.

395 south of Gardinerville. There's a lighted junction at Muller Parkway, turn left/east away from the Sierra and then Pinenuts Road is a right not fat ahead. We just drove down it a bit and found a place to park off the road and headed out south. I'm not sure what the status is now, but I am sure a BLM Map would give you a sense of the trail options.

There are also so options out of Smith Valley south of Yerington. In fact, you can get to Smith Valley out of Dayton by a combination of nice and some not so nice two track and single tracks. There are some epic smooth mining roads, too, where you can haul ass (I've been tapped out over 90 in some ) and perfect your class c skills drifting the corners.

If i could afford both a MX bike and a Trail bike i would do more of it but my bike is set up for track i almost never see single track anymore. One day i ll get rid of the Mx'r and look for a KTM 300

Awesome story! Yep we would park east of the 395, not all the way to gardnerville and blast up sand washes to the hills. Not really high elevation but around those smaller pines like you described. If you go east more there is a creek/stream that the trail follows and crosses the creek back and forth. Got water in my killswitch there once...doh. Goes all the way to Mustang I think Wink

We used to cut our own Christmas trees in the same area which is legal with a permit. Miss it A LOT. Need to hook up with Ridge and get back at it!

Cow Mountain in Northern California has some really fun single track. I loved it when I was in N. CA.
I only ride tracks now but I'm totally open for some good single track. I'm in So Cal now.

I do both but at 53 single track is easier on the knees and ankles so less moto for the last few years. Know a lot of of guys my age who can dust younger MX heroes in woods but cannot get around a track fast to save their lives. Very few guys are good at both. Like was already said the right bike for the job makes all the difference in the world.
You will never bitch about getting enough riding for your money if you enter a hare scrambles or enduro. I leave MX races pissed that I spent 60 bucks to ride for 20 Min. and it took all day.

Downieville, sweetwaters out of Bridgeport, Fish lake valley & the white mtns.

All killer areas relatively close to you.

Johnson Lane is where we used to stage... East off 395. Been about 10 years now so don't know what it's like now.

I still love going to the track, but for a great day of riding nothing beats a day of single track out in the desert. We've got about a zillion acres of the stuff here.

I've been telling guys for years that good, challenging ST trails will teach a guy to ride better.
Up here where I'm at, many times you search for 6 INCHES! of good real estate to pick your way through.
Then....when you get on a motocross track.....WOO-HOO WFO! Woohoo Rough?, what rough section? Laughing

I am always surprised by the fact that most motocrossers know nothing about off-road & off-road racers don't know the moto side, etc. (generally speaking, and I know I'm right, with exceptions).

I grew up racing off-road AND motocross, and love both. I follow (try to) moto, GNCC, Nat'l Enduro, WORCS, EX, SX, etc. I put everyone on an equal platform - they're all professionals in their respective sport.

Ok that was a little off-topic, but it goes right back to what you're asking. Every discipline can teach you something and help you with the other. Moto always makes me feel more aggressive, but off-road forces me to think about line choice and cornering. Then there is balance, technical skill, finesse, endurance, etc.

Yeah, you can do both.

I wouldn't call it single track, but I rode a GP track yesterday in Lebanon and I LOVED it. Only got to do about a lap before my bike started making a pretty awful noise. Didn't wanna risk it... :'( I wish I could go back, the weather was absolutely idea yesterday. And I'm not exaggerating, about 70's, not a cloud in sight, super fun GP track. Damn.

This is the GP track, tons of fun, if you live in Oregon check it out. $20 bucks to ride all day, and they have some trails to the top of a big hill.

Single track WAS my practice track. I could ride less than a mile and a half from my house and jump right on an enduro course.

I remember many of my early trail rides where we would pull up to a stop or get back to the trailer/truck/cabin and my buddy who rides the woods/trails a lot would ask me if I saw that deer or that stream and I would be like ??? It took me a while to start paying attention to where I was also, the first couple of years I would have no Idea where the hell I was once we got out there...lol. These days I pick and choose where I rock and roll and I ride at a much easier pace most of the time just enjoying being on two wheels out away from the rat race!

Single track provides the adventure and scenery a mx track can't provide. Each turn can present a new challenge where mx track is the same each time around so it gets old fast in my opinion. I only enjoy mx track when I'm able to ride with some friends and/or race a few laps with someone. Once you have mastered all the jumps in an mx track, you cxa Also single track is slower speed typically making it a safer experience and more forgiving when you crash.

I would say I love single track,but here in western NY and northern Penn. there are many types of what people call single track. If you take a pure moto person and ride the wide open trails in the woods they think this is single track. If you take a moto/woods rider and ride tight woods trails they think this is single track.Which is the stuff I love. Then there are the goat trails that if not marked you wouldn't know they are there. These are the trails put in by AA scrambles true mountain men.While doable they require every bit of any skill you thought you had. While I don't love this stuff it is a good feeling to know I can do it. And last there is what we call gooking. And that is right through the woods no trail involved.This involves picking up your bike and throwing it over huge fallen trees etc. sorta like the Red Bull rides you see on you tube. I love my bikes to much to do this.

But now the RMX has some motor work done to it, 1996 RM 52mm forks, and Slipdog revalved and resprung the suspension for me. It's the bike I have the most fun.
