Just because this a moto board doesn't mean I know how to actually ride a dirt bike...

Funny that I was looking at a super clean '86 YZ 490 back in December for $1,100, but the buyer for my CRF backed out at the last minute.

Dude it's on! That would be so much fun... The next one is May 4th and it's a 12 hour. I'll double check with Joel but pretty sure we are going to run double A.

Nice thread! Eddieville is a hoot if Scot preps it. That place has more potential than any track in the area if he would just get a guy like Steve Corrie to re-design the MX track. I am not much(at all) of an off-roader but just sent the barrel of on my '96 Cr125 Team Honda replica out for a 144 kit. I will be racing the 40+ Int class at PIR this year on it (and getting whooped by all the ex-pros on 450's).............

FYI, I don't think I've put 12 hours on my bike in the last year...

Hahaha man this is great! I had a 98 RMX myself, wasn't a huge fan of the handling but I loved the gearing! I'm sure it would be great for a "Wide open" style track.

If you are willing to make the journey up here i think that would be awesome. We'll have to get in touch and see what we can put together.

Awesome story! Best thing I have read on Vital in a while! I am looking for a YZ250 and then I am gonna go out to REM every saturday... My last bike was a 05 YAM 450. But no more 4 strokes for me
Ha! My last bike was an 06 YZ450. Need to get my insurance sorted out before I pull the trigger again, but I'm thinking used CRF or maybe I'll just drink the two stroke koolaid again.. Woohoo

This is such an awesome thread. I have been contemplating rounding up a few older bikes in nice shape and racing them just to prove a point (and have fun) myself. Between the young kids who dont know jack shit about bikes (aside from newer is better) and the older guys who MUST have the latest bike with all the trick parts, I think it would be a riot to show up with a bike that everyone considers obsolete and whoop all of them...or most of them. I am considering a YZ400F and a mid 1990's Honda CR250, two older bikes I have a sweet spot for.

what's truly pathetic is that I know a few guys who have quit riding because they say they cannot appord a brand new bike. When I point out to them that I could find a perfectly competitive nice bike for $2500 on craigslist all day long their eyes just glaze over. People are so fucking dumb...just sheep I tell ya baaaaaah must have fuel injection and air fork or I quit baaaaah

Sounds like a ton of fun. Awesome story.

I am a bit new to the Portland area and will have to go check out Eddieville.
Looks like about a 2 hour drive or so?
How often are they open.

Great thread. Since I live in climate that is under 60 degrees 9 months out of the year I have a "built" 2005 Honda CRF450 with 49hrs on the meter. I bought it new in 2007 for $3700. Did the suspension, motor, and pipe. I will never need a better bike. I rode a new 2012 CRF450 and my lap times were exactly the same. I think I could ride a 1997 CR250 and my lap times would be the same. I would love the "new" bike feeling but not for 8 THOUSAND DOLLARS. For 13 years I bought a new bike every year. The thumpers killed that for me.

Well now I don't feel so bad either. Riding my YZ250F with 434 hrs on it. One rebuild. Did finally get some new gear two years ago, other stuff was 6 yrs old, and had a few holes in it. Tech 3 boots, 5 yrs old. Now just gotta hope they can fix my shoulder so I can ride some more this year and next, Been at it since 1964, so I think it would be cool to ride and race for 50yrs!!
Bottom line, new old or somewhere in between, just ride!!! Smile

Yeah - would be cool to get the info on the good tracks around here and when they are open. I got a little spoiled when I lived in the Denver area with 5 tracks within 45 min from my house. Thanks.

There's world class woods riding 45 mins from here Cool

I'm not huge into moto, but I'll do some practice days and an occasional race. Usually Mt View or Washougal cause they're close. There's also plenty of private tracks in the area if you happen to be friendly.

We need to get a PDX Vital meetup in the works!

This is awesome!

Bike setup is greater than a new bike with expensive hop-up parts.

Smooth style, corner speed and fitness is greater than a fast bike.

Clunker bike and a hoodie. That's the way to put it rock. I had a friend rave about the trick mapping and exhaust and something or other and I asked him how it worked against 7 year old smokers(see avatar). I had just caught and passed him in our moto. That kinda let the air out of his sails a little bit.

I actually like the looks of the older bikes and that the main diff IMO from now to at least the mid 90s. Look at a mid 90s bike and a new model honestly, two wheels, USF, SSR, AL frame (deff not an advantage imo) bars, seat, fenders.............. The last new bike I got was a 07 250xcf and it was great but i havn't gotten a new one since. Great story and very true.
