I think Chad Reed should consider signing Ben Townley if he can't get Ryan Villopoto for 2013.What do you guys think?

I don't think he was too happy that Townley got injured in a race he didnt have to do. That bridge could be burnt

Hope he gets some sort of ride lined up

Burnt a bridge? That is ridiculous, how could you be mad at a racer being a racer, he was preparing for his assault on the US and got hurt. What would Chad prefer, he wraps himself in cotton wool and shows up well off the pace. Doubt you know anything about Chad and Bens relationship. In saying that I dont think Chad would sign him as I imagine Ben is outdoor only at this stage in his career. I'd like to see him back at TLD personally

Oh and Ben hurt himself in practice at round 2, so it could just of happened if he was in the US training for outdoors

I agree. Would be very cool for Ben to have one more go. Chad obviously likes him so good combo.

I doubt Reed would be so pissed at Townly riding Rd 2 to not consider him. Any time you throw a leg over the bike you could end up in hospital.

If I were in Reeds position I would be taking notice of how devoted Townley is to his current team.

I think Townley has demonstrated a remarkable ability to plant himself in the dirt. Perhaps Reed finally figured that out after the last crash and decided to look elsewhere. Ben has been hurt a lot.

And, how many times in a row does someone get injured before you start seeing a pattern? There are a whole slew of talented pro riders that suffer from one seemingly random injury after another. When Bailey or Emig talk about how mental racing is at that level, that has to include getting injured too...

Ben's a racer, as fast as they come. He certainly needs to stay away from SX, but come on - he'll be top 5, podium, pull a moto win or two but hardly ever out of the top 10 when he comes back to the Nats. A lot of good teams need that. He should race while he has the desire and that speed...but also as long as he has his body performing at peak.
Now Hill has the same skill and drive, but if he can't get his body right, I think he may have to step back from his moto goals, if he hasn't already. I doubt that means he won't continue to race and enjoy moto. He may more than ever once he adjusts those goals. Eventually it happens.
I wish both the best of luck, they've both accomplished wins at the top of our sport. It's a very elite group and I'm a fan of both.

I think people are confusing how much to pay him with whether he can show the speed he's had in the past. Reed has consistently said he only wants guys who can win. Townley has had that speed, and if he still does, then the issue of the risk of him making it through some races can be dealt with as a compensation issue.

That said, it's harder to see how he could play a role as a primary rider. It sure seems like Reed is looking for a top rider solidly in his prime so that Reed can pass the torch and can show the sponsors he's asking to be in for the long haul that he has a premier guy who has some consistent winning years in front of him.

I think the decision boils down to the rider themselves.....doesn't it?

Injuries come in hand and hand with this sport.......look at how many top guys are out already. It happens every year.

Ben still has the speed to make a mark in this sport......to me it would be a shame to step away this early. I hate seeing guys get hurt just as much as you guys do......but it's what most of these dudes were born and bread to do.....race.

I don't think that Townley wants to race a full series of SX from interviews he's done in the past so that really only leaves him as a fill in rider for the outdoors.

There aren't many riders who are faster than Townley, but his injury troubles have somewhat tarnished his reputation. I would like to see him get another shot. He has the potential to do well.

I am a huge BT101 fan, I love the guy and his riding style. I just don't see anyone state side taking a chance on signing him, his body is made of glass.

Reed needs a non-injury prone rider. I think Townley & Canard for that matter would be poor choices.

when did he get hurt in sx??? he gets hurt in MX, literally. the last 3~4 years its been outdoors either practiing or racing thats been his big, be gone for 6 months, injuries.

hill, hes just got a long physical road to travel and a mental one as well. good guy, honestly hoping he can make it back but it will be a Doug Henry'esqu miracle if he even remotely makes it back.

I think that is very unlikely.
I assume Chad would want a proven 450 class title contender in SX.
I believe he has already said that if he didn't get a contender he wasn't going to hire anyone(even his good buddy Byrne).

He is probably wanting a title contender to get some Lloyds Of London policy for the team or something like that.
If they win the championship,they both win big I would assume.
Or even with another top guy...... get more sponsor money/funding for the team along with a solid policy.


Also,having a guy like Townley on his team who already has a Lites SX championship probably wouldn't even lower the amount he would have to pay/lose to Lloyds if they didn't win (all that much).
I heard a few times that Lloyds is getting tighter & tighter when it comes to SX/MX policies.
Some guys in this sport have won big.

I think he'd be nuts to do that. He might as well sign Tommy Hahn and Josh Grant too. Between the 3 of them they might actually make it to all the races. Don't let them all ride at once rotate them in.

Pretty sure his first Hip injury was done during a SX race during the SuperX championship when he was on the Kawasaki.

But think you are right, the majority of his other recent injuries have been MX Related.

He is currently doing a great job commentating at the Australian MX Nationals, as well as mentoring his young Australian team mate in the MX2 class.

At the moment Ben will make his return to race when the new Australian SX Series starts in a few months time, well once he feels it is time for him to race again.

Cant wait to see him back on track

It's the risk reward thing that Ben needs to pay attention to at this point in his career...IMHO. His value is outdoors as a front runner and yes he has as much potential to wipe himself out there. But -SX is such a brutal sport to practice, along with getting collected in other's carnage. I believe you have less control over staying injury free and it comes infront of the outdoor season where he needs to be in it to challenge for a championship.
