Fully agree with you but you’re not considering the fundamental argument that I’m making when I claim it’s impossible to chip away at such things. Chipping away is reform, it is single issue politics and doesn’t address the fundamental issues at stake. It’s a compartmentalized approach to a problem whose needs can only be addressed holistically.

The mechanism for removing money from politics would undermine every single aspect of our entire society, both economically and culturally. That one particular issue is entangled within a larger system such that decoupling it, reforming it, and plugging it back into the same system is not just impractical, it’s impossible.

Reform is like buying a house from 1850 and hiring a builder to come in and rebuild the entire thing except there’s one caveat: they can not go down into, look at, or even consider the condition of the foundation… So everything we try to fix (reform/chip away at) matters not because what we are building on is a fundamentally unsound and defective foundation, and it will always undermine all efforts to “fix” what is broken.

I don’t disagree with you fully we’ll never get it right. But I don’t think wanting government to be just slightly less controlled by corporations is asking for the world.

The world is too complex to just say yes I have the perfect system and implement it. So you take what you have and you try to solve problems as you go, and that’s just what society is. Some societies have managed to survive thousands of years, some much much less.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about providing the opportunity and space to cultivate an environment dedicated to sustainable experimentation which aims to create a society based on equality rather than exploitation. Or at the very least not being antagonistic towards this ideal. It is a willingness to try.

What we have right now is an environment cultivated to providing the proving grounds for a society based on exploitation, and no amount of reforming can change this fundamental aspect.

Is there a society you think is doing it the best?

I didn’t come up with that on my own.  The link is to Glenn Beck from this morning.

Man…Trump is losing me with all this Venezuela, and Greenland take over nonsense…I don’t support this kind of thing at all!  Good or bad leaders, oil or no oil, drugs or no drugs…Why can’t we just fix our own problems at home (and there are PLENTY of them) and then we can go back to fixjng everyone else’s problems and being the world police, IF, the world wants to be fixed and policed?  And if they don’t, we go back to minding our own business…this is stupid.

I’m with you. As others have suggested, my biggest fear is the world superpowers appear to be preparing for a global conflict.

Venezuela is done and over as long as the country doesn’t fall into chaos or civil war while we are in charge of government. If we have to deploy boots on the ground, it would not be ideal.

The only two countries on earth capable of fighting a global conflict right now are the US and China. There are others capable of launching nukes, but conventionally speaking it's a two horse race with Europe trying to play catchup and India/Pakistan basically only concerned with each other.

@harescrambled I think I accidentally deleted my original post so I'll add the screen cap for reference again. As I understand it currently they plan to put the money from the Venezuelan oil in off-shore accounts outside of US Treasury and congressional oversight.

Here is where it's mentioned:

Hopefully the last sentence has some weight and this will be revisited. As it stands they seem to want it off shore so there are less guardrails for where the money goes and how it's spent. AKA Trump himself decides, without Congress.

Well if all that does come to fruition you gotta admit holding hostage over the finances of another is certainly a very good way to leverage your position lol 😂

Why WOULD it go into the US treasury? Congress would immediately borrow against it. And why would anyone think there would be no oversight of their assets until they got things sorted out? Do people think the government told the southern states "to stop being racist" and it magically happened the next day? Without oversight you'll just have the same actors with different names run the country.

Word, we'll go with this take for now. Though I see a ton of irony in your last sentence.

I was more laughing at the absurdity of our present situation than poo pooing the idea that Donald thinks he should have the final say in all matters.

And honestly when you consider who got us here and how, the idea of Donald having the final say… well fuck it, how much worse could it get?. Let’s give him a chance.

Is it easier to corrupt one man or 535 members of congress? And on the flip side: is it easier for one man, rather than 535, to remove himself from the corruption that is all pervasive?

Why would it? Well I think many would argue it would and it should because the United States military performed the action, not the military of Trumplandia.

Personally I can’t say I care much. The idealist in me would love the entire global society to fall and crumble so people like you and I can regain the right to our liberty and self determination. The pragmatist in me would like to see America gain control of all the western hemisphere.

Luckily The Donfather has proven himself to be a stand up guy, and has no track record of corruption himself. We (I mean he) will fight corruption with corruption, and return the power to the people. Let's all patiently wait for him to drain the swamp and make America great again. Whatever the fuck that means these days.

That said, I appreciate your optimism.

It’s not how they look.  It is what they stood for. Do you need a reminder, or are you good?

Not quite. But it’s America. You are free to continue to ignore reality. Good luck to you both.

"It’s not how they look.  It is what they stood for." 100%

And the policies they wanted implemented that lined up with their beliefs which were on full display with their looks. Policies that they wanted you and I to live by.

At least they were openly visible with their appearance. It was obvious. The current gang just dress better but still are peddling harmful policies and not making Americans first.

Dude, I’m so fucking grounded in reality it goes right over your head. Making decisions that harm the country are still just that. Maybe different issues but similar intent.

Does anything about how the Donfather operates lead you to believe he would let a neutral third party manage funds?

Again, I appreciate the optimism here. But as @R66 mentioned previously, let's not ignore our current reality either...

Did not see that coming from you on this issue. I 100% agree that it wasn't the look but the entirety of the package. Guess I'm pretty juvenile as well. Hey, that's a step or two up from what they typically call me here. 🤣🤣
