They're the same people behind turning prevent-ive into prevent-a-tive.

I tell ya, it's a flippin' conspiracy to infect society with unnecessary "A"s! Evil

Must be.

Not to sound like Falcon here, but in the States preventive was the original spelling and has been accepted as the correct word - the root word "prevent" with the the suffix "-ive" - but preventative has become so common (especially the last decade or so) that many dictionaries quit fighting it and list it as an alternative spelling. Why it needs the extra syllable "-at" is unknown to me. There are a number of other words that have had similar fates due to mispronunciations that became common. Can't have the uneducated feeling uneducated, now can we? Woohoo

Aluminium was the original proposed named for the element and is the typical/accepted spelling/pronunciation in European countries with aluminum being the accepted form in the US. I only know this geeky bit of trivia because of my background. Cool

However, a beetah (usually pronounced "beater") in the States is typically a worn-out POS bike usually sold on Craigslist or FB that the owner claims has low-hours and was also recently completely rebuilt (why a low-hour bike needs rebuilding is beyond me, but hey, it's their scam). Grinning

Cheers! Wink

Since it is the "English language", and England is a European Country, "Aluminium" would the correct spelling!

But if you have it on a spelling test in the US, don't be surprised if you find red ink on your paper when you get it back. Cheerful

Talking Aussie: when a word ends with an “r”, it’s pronounced as an “a”.

Examples: Hunta, Computa

Any word that ends with “a” is pronounced as an “r”.

Example: Dater (Data)

That's the same for the Boston area.

Been there once or twice and you can find various stories on the two spellings regarding how long they've been in use, but all of them agree on the fact that the original word is "preventive" (again, the root is "prevent" and the suffix is "-ive" ~ why the need for "at" in between them? Do you say "protective" or "protectative"?)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to do some preventative maintenance on my bike so the aluminium doesn't oxidize and make it look like a beetah!  Laughing

I had a friend from Perth who was telling me all about crocodiles. Apparently, one had caught up to and treed two young kids who were riding an ATV. They were stuck in the tree for two days while the croc waited for them to come down. The kids were finally rescued by some adults.

Anyway, it was hilarious listening to his accent when he was making fun of something or emphasizing an occurrence. "Yeh, I recon you get dun by a croc, yeuw don' knew yer deead!"
