Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone has experienced and fixed this issue. I have been getting random motion sickness while riding (track) for a few years now. It used to only happen a couple times a year, but has progressively became more frequent. I’d say almost 50% of the time now. It’s very inconsistent so my doctors and I have really had a hard time figuring it out. It’s not something I can ride through because I start to lose focus, get blurred vision, and lose body awareness (land before I think, bumps surprise me). Once I get it in a day I usually feel it the rest of the day until I sleep.
Things we’ve checked off:
Did blood sugar tests, not diabetic
They don’t think it’s inner ear because that typically causes consistent vertigo not random
Nutrition/Water intake
Dramamine
I’m in great shape, ride often
Visions fine, good lenses
I breathe
It doesn’t happen consistently with weather, location, track type, time of day so none of that is a factor
I don’t really get carsick or airsick and the only other activity I’ve somewhat experienced this with is a couple times snowboarding.
Theres times when it happens first ride out or towards the 2nd or 3rd moto. And there’s days I can ride all day no problem. Same tracks, conditions everything.
Sorry for the long post just wanted to eliminate the commenting back and forth on things we’ve already ruled out. First vitalmx post, hopefully it’s the missing piece!
You wear a heart rate monitor by any chance?
Very strange. I've been riding my whole life and recently had times where I felt like my equilibrium was off and I would land before my eyes/brain thought I was landing. Not sure if I fixed it but I do think the lenses on my goggles (they were Oakley prizm lenses) seemed to cause it more than when I was riding with a clear lense.
Do you have a history of concussions? If so, that is something you should mention to a neurologist.
Yes my numbers are kind of extreme. I average 180-190 and peak 200-209. Like I said I’m in great shape. My base HR is just high. 160

Ya it’s a bummer for sure. I only wear clear actually tried the 100% version of prism to see if it would help but I’d say it made it worse.
Unfortunately yes. My doc said that there is a chance that could have something to do with it, but if that’s the case there’s nothing I can do. So she said let’s focus on what we can change. (Big fan of my doctor for these reasons)
Definitely not normal. What you're describing doesn't really sound like motion sickness and I wonder if your issue is more HR/BP issues? Heart is like any other pump, if you try to run it too fast it's not going to pump well and you might be dropping BP.
If you're in great shape your resting HR should be pretty low, 60 or so.... and those peak numbers are higher than what is likely healthy for you. I bet if you figure out why your resting HR is that high you'll have the answer to your question.
I suffer from this pretty bad if I ride moto. I've been riding woods for past 5+ years partially because of this. Came on one day at Budds Creek open practice 7 or 8 years ago felt so bad I thought I was coming down with the flu. Went back a couple weeks later and same thing... I will take Dramamine depending on where I'm going to be riding and that has always worked.
I have always been sensitive to motion sickness.. I cant even go on swings with my kids without feeling terrible. There are some exercises you can do to help the symptoms I will see if I can find the name of them. Good luck...
My avg resting is 55bpm. Moto is the only thing that spikes it that high so I always assumed adrenaline had to do with that. When I run or cycle I won’t touch 200 even when I try. My BP is good. I believe Derek Drake had something with his heart as well I wonder if he had similar symptoms.
Happens to me when a trail ride started using Sea bands for motion sickness.
I don’t want to cause an alarm but get your ticker checked out. My dad was going through the same stuff and also a really high hR. We found out he had a blockage in his heart. They immediately removed the blockage and motion sickness and high hr went away.
Man, I’m not a doctor at all, but have you done a stress test. The one with getting on a treadmill and spiking your heart rate? Keep searching my friend because that’s not normal while you’re riding. Maybe heart arrhythmia, while under duress, not resting?? Good luck
I ask this question seriously... do you smoke weed?
Have your doctor check you one more time for the inner ear. I had a condition they call "benign positional vertigo," which comes from the inner ear. Sometimes people who experience jarring and impacts (sound familiar?) get small fractures and/or bone fragments inside the inner ear fluid. When one of those comes in contact with the tissues, look out.
My symptoms weren't noticeable during riding, but I sure felt drunk AF when I got out of bed the wrong way once or twice! The good news is that the condition has treatment and for me it went away on its own. If they haven't ruled out that possibility, I'd say it's a strong candidate.
Just here to say I have similar heart rates to you racing MX I max at 200-205, riding hard 180-190, and then for working out hard I probably only get up to 170-180, HRV average of 76, and resting heart 54 BPM. Mentioning that so you know you're not alone there. Just FYI, I'm 34 and work out a bunch, and try to eat well but up until a year ago ate like shit haha.
I've had a problem my whole life with motion sickness but luckily it's never happened while riding. Usually, one or two Dramamine or patches work for me for cruises, planes, country roads, etc.
I hope you can figure it out.
Have not. I’ll have to look into that thank you.
I do not
Haven’t heard of this one. I’ll bring it up to them thank you.

Do you have any sinus issues? I have horrible sinuses and everything that comes with it. I get frequent sinus headaches with all kinds of crazy pressure spikes in my head and ears. Sometimes I will get a touch of weird motion sensation from this.
Well that sucks man. First I would say do not ask medical questions on the internet
Unfortunately it could be a great number of things, I'm sure your doctor is on top of this.
A friend of mine had a very serious health issue, related to the brain, that got detected by chance during an eye exam. His vision was fine, he was not wearing glasses or anything. Luckily it got treated and he's fine now. If you haven't done so yet, you could go for fundus (or ophthalmoscopic) examination, that's quite a standard and fast test, just to rule things out.
I wish you well and many more years of riding.
I have a kind of out there suggestion but it's worth checking.
I was recently struggling with feeling sick, nauseous, having headaches, blurred vision etc on the bike, I really couldn't figure it out.
Tried standing more, sitting more, changing helmets, no chest protector, less clothes, more clothes, working out more, eating less pre ride, more pre ride, less and more water blah blah.
Anyway I finally realised I had an absolutely tiny coolant leak from a rad hose, one drop every minute type tiny, the coolant level wasn't even low from it. But it slowly dropped onto my exhaust and over the course of a ride it was enough sitting right behind it to make me feel sick. I found the leak, fixed it and since then I've been able to breathe easy and all the symptoms have gone, I can't believe that such a small amount of coolant could do that and it's probably my body being crazy sensitive but it's worth checking because I know how horrible those symptoms are when riding!
I’m sure your doc is good, but if they are not a neurologist, you should find one and go get further testing. The concussion injuries you have had can exasperate other potential issues. There are treatment options that can help reduce the effects, once the root cause is identified. As others have said, a stress test is a good idea as well. The bottom line is there’s nobody on Vital that is going to be able to solve the mystery for you, but hopefully one of us jabronis can help point you in a positive direction. Good luck and I hope you get it resolved.
What he's describing here is nothing more than motion sickness. Which can be worse than vertigo. I have the same exact symptoms and issues and went through every possibility with doctors and did a ton of tests. Unfortunately, for some of us as we get older for some reason, we develop motion sickness. It sucks.
You need a real cardio work up. 160 is a resting heart rate for a meth head. If you are really in great shape your resting heart rate should be in the 50's.
There is random vertigo, it runs in my wife's family. It's called Menieres Disease. My wife gets it but she self treats. FIL and 2 BILs have it.

Have you tried performing an Epley maneuver? My brother was having issues and that cured him.

I suffer from this terribly. Not while moto, or even woods riding, but when I ride tight washes or do a lot of up and down quickly it destroys my day. Only thing I’ve tried that works is the little patch you put behind your ear.
First time it happened to me was on a start straight. Hadn't ridden in awhile and thought it had to do with that. Then the second time and third time I was beginning to think old age. My doc hasn't come up with anything other than use Dramamine. Not a cure but it allows me to ride. If I am just putting around slow it never happens. Usually happens the first time I get on the gas hard but it does not happen every time.
After not riding regularly I fought blurred vision for years. It was inconsistent, but when it came on it made it almost impossible to see the ruts. It seemed to go away the more I worked out and better I ate during ride days. But I also kind of learned to try and power thru it and not hyper focus on it and let it ruin my ride day and seems to have helped some. Hard part with doctors is theyre likely not going to narrow it down the first go around, going to take many visits and likely you dropping the hint based on in depth research youre doing on your own time. Good luck, I hope you get it figured out.
What is your resting HR?
Mine is abnormally low at 45bpm
