In the last 5 months I have been trying to give my 09 450 away at $4000.. Maybe 5 calls on it.. In the meantime I have sold my 08 YZ250 and my 07 yz250( both 2strokes) the first day they were listed and for more than $4500 each. When I sold the 07 last month I practically had 2 guys in a bidding war to get it. I have a guy comming to look at my 450 today.. Hopefully it sells so I can go put a deposit on a 2011 KTM 250sx
That is the simple truth right there.
Finally sold it today after 5months of trying.. I had to take $3800, and throw in a bike stand and a set of tie downs to make the sell, but its finally gone. That 450 has been nothing but a money pit, but I will never make that mistake again.. Going Tues. to put a deposit down on a new 2stroke KTM 250sx

You're right! It shouldn't ever take this long for people to realize they are being sold on a bad idea. It would be even better if more people knew what a bad idea smelled like so they could avoid buying into it at the beginning...

Unfortunately for the non-sheeple in a population, the sheeple who make up the vast majority can be effectively sold on nearly any idea, no matter how stupid it is. This means that every once in a while, you'll find yourself wondering why the radio is filled with boy bands, why property taxes are 10 or 12 k per houshold in a state where public services are threadbare to say the least, and also why the world got all kissy faced with 4 stroke motocross bikes that were Heavier, Hard to start, Slower (check out ANY supercross all the way up to and including 05 where one was actually being ridden), More expensive IN EVERY WAY, AND shorter on service life while being many times more prone to catastrophic failures, from the day the first ones farted off the factory floors.

With enough shiny pro 4 stroke TV talk from properly coached race announcers/bike pushers, plus a load of half truths in magazines along with some well placed omissions of fact, you can apparently sell just about any basket case to a lot of people.

Congratulations... Here's your bridge deed.

Thanks,

Jim
I 100% agree - I sold my SX 250 2 stroke last month for more than it was advertised for after I had lots of people bidding for it on ebay - people are realising that 4 strokes are ticking time bombs and they are moving back to 2 strokes in droves! finally sense is prevailing - it's just a shame that it took so many people counting the costs stuck with broken 4 strokes for it to happen! many of us were saying this from the start..

I've been thinking about making the same purchase. Not only are the four stokes crazy expensive, but i'm now on my fourth exhaust on my current RMZ due to racing incidents. Everything for four strokes cost more and it's killing the sport! I could have damn near bought a 250 2 stroke to bum around on with the money spent on exhausts alone. Laughing Sad.

In the past month I have seen clean 2003 and 2004 two strokes sold for under a grand. It has more to do with - seller's desire to sell, buyers have no money at the moment. If we were back in 2005 when people had money, you would notice the prices being higher. Two stroke, four stroke have little to do with it. It has to do with nothing is selling at the moment.

For the people saying that others bought into it and should have known better, everyone with a brain knew better. When I was 5th gear tapped on my kx250 and a crf450 flew by me like I was standing still, I decided it was time to get a four stroke even though I knew they suck. I held off as long as I could. If you want to be competitive, you need to be on one. If you don't race or are just out for fun in the vet class that's all good, but you need a 450 to race a 450 if you are racing competitively.

2003 and 2004 Two Strokes for Under $1K... where? The supply of newer two strokes are affecting price. There are a lot more newer four strokes in the used bike market.

If you got passed like you were standing still while you were 5th tapped on a KX250 it was time to check the throttle because it was obviously not turning all the way.

It is still one of the cheapest forms of motorsports. But like the post said above, when you can but new left over 450s for 5 to 6 K and get easy finance through the dealer, who would pay premium for used.

You want to see high prices, try buying a 50. 03's/04 Sr's brining $1000+ and guys wont move.
The 50's never loose value... You will sell it for the same price as your purchase after many years of thrashing it..

120 snowmachines are the same.. Never lose a dime on them.. Hell they are a safer investment than the stock market!!!

It's got nothing to do with "what" you are selling. It is the "when". The market sucks. Nothin used is moving. Just part of the slow economy, no jobs, people loosing homes etc. And the rollers who have money are not as willing to part with it.

Just sit on those 4 bangers for 20 years and hope they become a collectible vintage bike.

Kind of funny , as when the 4 strokes popularity gained momentum, you could not give a two stroke away, hardly. Now , the used bike buyers are willing to ante up for a 2 stroke.

The used bike market is over saturated with four strokes everybody is gun shy on buying.

You sir are an idiot. Actually, I am an "A" rider captain and believe it or not, a slower bike is a disadvantage. Grow a brain.

No, this specific occasion I am speaking of happened down a long straight on a deep sand track. You guys must have a hard time grasping this concept of a 250 two stroke not being competitive at all with a 450. I guess that's why so many pros are racing the 250 two stroke these days.

You could have just picked up a tooth or two on your front sprocket....and/or lost a couple teeth on the rear sprocket if you want to go faster while tapped in 5th gear...much cheaper than a four stroke! WinkSmile

Somebody needs to come up with an affordable alternative to traditional stem valves, like that rotary valve head. Take valve wear and failure out of the picture, and there is no longer an argument over two strokes being easier and cheaper to maintain.

Since I opened my shop in January, I sold my first bike on consignment in late February. Since then, I have sold 25 units so far on consignment. Only 6 of those were the new generation 4 strokes. The other items were play bikes, PWC's, and quads with a street bike thrown in. I have an 08 YZ450 with under 45 hours on it right now for $4000 and zero action on it. I will have to drop it to $3900 next week. It is a bear to sell those things but give me a TTR230 or a quad and it will sell in a week or two.

As far as easy financing for a new bike, I would have to disagree with that. Financing is one of the reasons the dealership I worked at closed down. Plenty of people were coming in to apply for a bike only to be turned down by the banks. I would say over a dozen people that would have easily qualified two years ago were turned down. One guy in his mid forties making over $100k a year with a credit score of 750 was turned down because he didn't have any payment history because everything he had was payed off...go figure.

hahaha!

C'mon Tiki .... you just can't stop waving the thumper flag can you. Ask anyone that is involved in the used bike biz ... or any dealer that carries both two and four strokes and you will be told that prices are way down on used thumpers. And that two strokes are going immediately and for maximum price.

I've been looking for a good deal on an '07 or up YZ250 and even had a guy hitting the bike auctions from repos and insurance companies and it is the same story. Smokers are going for top dollar. You can find steals on used thumpers because no one wants to roll the dice on them ... but new or used, two strokes are still getting top dollar.

It's the economy stupid!!!!!!!

When we were flowing with milk and honey we just bought bought and bought, which naturally increased the value.

Has nothing to do with 2 vs. 4 stroke, or maintenance issues.

I am looking at local online forums. Guys are selling 08 CRF450s for $3000. One guy has his 09 KXF250 for $2000 and they still are not selling. I just picked up a 09 KXF450 for $4500 and trying to sell my 06 CRF450 for $2000 and can't even get a call. Have it posted on local forums and cycletrader.com. Is the market really that bad. I mean these bikes are bringing $8000 brand new before any upgrades. Really sad.
Same here. All the local forums and cycle trader and not even a call.. It's been out for about two weeks. I have a 2004 Cr125 with brand new top and bottom end and not a single call for $1200 bucks. It is sad. I sure wish that was a 250F you have for $2000. You are close also. Good luck

Not sure if there's much of a market for 125s anymore but 250Ts are going for top dollar.

I've been into three of the local dealers and they will not deal on the few new 250Ts they get. Not seeing any deals on used 250Ts either.
