Idk what to do with this bike. Its my brother in laws and he has let it go to SHIT. Its an 01 (i believe) ktm 125sx I am going to make him an offer for it but seeing how everything is rusted since its been in the rain and sun for a year idk if i will. But how much before i could make this thing ridable? I was thinking of giving him like $250 for it. But i dont know much about working on bikes.. let alone anything about 2 strokes. lol But from these pics what do i need? Or would it even b worth the time?

First off, I 'spose it depends on how much fuel was left in it the last time it was ridden. After that? Plastic, cables, chain, sprockets, and a big refurb on anything that was steel and possibly rubber.

The absolute wretchedness of the 43mm forks alone would make it not worth it to me...

If you decide to part it out (probably best), let me know. I have the same engine in my shifter cart, can use it for parts or back-up. ~ Thanks,

For a guy that doesn't know wrenches, aahhh.
No guy,. too much to do there.
If it doesn't need a clutch or top or bottom end, it's a miracle.
Unless you have an old guy down the street,
with a garage full of tools,
that will teach you,
pass on it.
Shame too, the 2 stroke is actually easier to work on.

But then again, all the big parts are there.

I'd say, running and looking half good, that's a $1,500 bike.

You'd be surprised what a pail of water, soap and some brillow will do.
I bought a yamaha465 like that one time. Rusted up.
No back fender and the seat half torn off.
Seat cover, fender, a fresh tank of fuel, rode it for 2 years.

You're gonna put at least 200, maybe 800, in it after you get it, parts alone.

hmmmm everyone that is saying part it out i dont think that is likely... but how will i know if it needs a top or bottom end? Srry i dont know much about bikes. Ive only owned 1 and ive only rode 10 times on a track before selling my bike (09 kx250f) the most fun ive ever had in my life throwing a leg over that brand new thing and being taught by my boy Will Posey. But im a hard core fan of the sport.

And the main reason im wanting to get this and fix it up is because i have a 4 month old son Smile in about 3 yrs im gonna get him a pw50 and see if he likes riding. If so then i would like to have had a couple yrs dealing with 2 strokes for when he moves on to a 50sx or later a 65... That way i can rebuild his bikes myself and work on them myself.... Cuz im the most non mechanically inclined man on the earth as of now lol but i want to learn.

Looking at the frame and engine covers it appears that the bike was ridden very little in its previous life. I'd at least clean the carb and take a peek in the exhaust port and then give it a go. If it runs good I'd clean it up and ride it.

Good on you for planning ahead to be able to help with your boys riding. I have 2 children. Ages 2 and 3. Hopefully both will be riding soon. Your boy is 4 months old, which means you've got a long way to go before he is going to be riding anything with a motor in it. So if you can pick it up really cheap, a service manual, and searching online (assuming you have the time in your daily life to do these things) you should be able to have that thing shined up and running. The best way to learn, it to do it. You will be really surprised when you open up that 2 stroke motor how easy they really are to work on. Also, like stated above, it doesn't look as though that bike was ridden very hard in its life.

My question is.. WHHHYYYY???? Why would anyone let a bike sit outside like that for a year? If he wasn't going to ride it, he should have at least just sold it when it was in good running order.

It sure looks like its been sitting for more than a year to me. But +1 on the brillo pads and soap -- get the rust off, change out the wear items and see if she will run.

Worst case, get it clean and running cheap and sell it as a running project. That will bring $800 all day running.

I just sold a NON running 01 YZ250 for $750. Blown bottom end and I was moving, didn't get to it. So you'd be surprised what people will pay for 2 strokes

You will need a new bike honestly. It's going to cost more in parts to get that thing running and not looking like ass than it would buying a decent running early '00s 125 of any brand.

If you really don't know much about working on bikes, take lots of photos as you disassemble the overwhelming majority of it. Lay everything out and scrub it all clean. Find someone who does know about working on them and have them look over all of it before you put it back together. You'll need someone to help with some fresh fork seals and inspect the engine and carb for whatever repairs they may need. You need to keep your expenses low as that bike will never be more than a $1200.00-1500.00 bike. Tires, tubes, chain, sprockets, cables, grips, top end kit, air filter, suspension rebuild, plastics, seat cover, graphics.....it all adds up pretty quick.

But sometimes it is just fun to have a project. Smile

Save yourself a million headaches and try this.

Seriously though, he obviously doesn't give a shit about it. Tell him to sign the title over to you and you will get it out of his hair.

Thanks a lot. But honestly he just doesnt like riding it. lol He isnt into mx/sx at all. His dad that lives 2 states away gave it to him as a bday gift 2 yrs ago. he rode it in the woods a little the first year and then nvr touched it again. Im gonna see what he wants for it and purchase it and breakk it apart and clean it up and change the things that need changed.

Honestly, I wish I could find an old beater like that for $150 or $200. It would make a great project bike for me as I have no bike anymore.

Haha, my bro in law has the exact same bike, he got it for free. It's a mess aswell but allot better then what u have there.
He could not believe it when i said it would bring 1200-1500 if it would run and after a small mockup.

Gonna pull the motor next week and see what needs to be done to make it run. The previous owner (tool) ran a VERY oil ritch mixture and complained that it did nothing else but eat sparkplugs. I wonder why.... Huh

Go have a read on http://www.ktmtalk.com/ And throw in some questions there, loads of knowledge to start with and really skilled wrenchers to help u out.

If u want to make it look perfect you're gonna have to bend your wallet backwards. Just the mechanical side of things would be no more then a few 100 quid. Pull the motor to check things out and replace the worn parts. A worst case scenario of the engine: full engine rebuild is like 400dollars with all bearings, gaskets, piston, cilinder re-coat and rebuild crank. With the right mindset and some reading a smoker rebuild is a fun and relatively easy process.

Same here, I'd snap it up like a shot and I'm glad to see the OP did. The thing is there's only so many of those left and at the end of it you're going to have a awesome play bike. Potential beauty there no doubt.

Nice! I've always wanted to fix up an older bike. I have a good friend with a 2004 YZ125 that we have always joked about me taking off his hands. I can't decide if I really want it or not. Honestly, the bike probably has 10-15 hours on it and he's owned it since new. A couple years ago we pulled it out of storage, I cleaned the carb and put in a new plug and it fired right up. Cosmetically, it's kind of beat up... just needs some new plastics/grips/levers. Somehow in that short amount of time he managed to crash the hell out of it. It still has original tires/chain.

Would this be a good bike to pick up for cheap? I don't even know what I will use it for. I haven't been riding MX for the past couple of years and was thinking maybe I would pick it up, put a few hundred into it and start using it at the track. I'm sure all it really needs for me would be new chain/sprocket/tires/grips and I would probably re-spring the forks and shock. I'm guessing I could take it off his hands for $600-1000.

The mentality that keeping up with the guy next door has brought to MX is just amazing. Unless it's been sitting with the plug out or he ran straight gas in it there nothing wrong with the engine. That bike, some nights in the garage and a few hundred dollars someone could have just as much fun as they would on a brand new $8,000 monthly payment. 95% of the riders at any given track would do no better on a brand new bike than they would on a well maintained 5 or even 10 year old bike. Would I show up at a race on a 2001 KTM125? Well, no. But don't do as I do, do as I say. Check ebay for any mechanical parts(non engine internal) you need, good used works just as well, see if you can find someone here that has a takeoff stock chain and and even sprocket. You can probably even find new plastic cheap on ebay or a local shop that has some old stock they're stuck with. Go to the hardware store and buy a $10 jar of oxyalic acid aka Wood Bleach, mix a little in a bucket of water and soak the rusty parts overnight, even the painted stuff. In the morning take a soft brass brush and knock off any rust that is left. Rinse it off, put it back together and ride it, sell it, whatever. You made a great buy.
