Motorcycles going into a RECESSION

Edited Date/Time 2/14/2017 5:26pm
With the economic cost and lack of great jobs
What will the dirt bike or (Motorcycle) market do.
I feel the new generation bikes are Amazing but
The cost of upper eight grand up to ten thousand
Is a little much. Example would be every brand except Yamaha went to air forks and claimed
Lighter and cheaper yet all of there cost never
Dropped.

In.

I think maybe he meant rec session. Like at the YMCA. They used to have swimming rec sessions when i was a kid.
Now I guess they are working on mx rec sessions but bikes are too expensive.

I could be wrong.

Personally it scares the hell out of me.

Having worked in the industry I can tell you it was always on the back of my mind.....when the economy takes a shit, not many people are able to afford a 10k bike, an additional 2k in parts to get it "ready", plus anywhere between 1k-2k in riding gear...and this is all before maintenance, fuel, track/race fee etc etc...

Don't get me wrong, the economy affects pretty much everyones line of work, however making your living off people purchasing items for a "luxury hobby" is always a gamble.

There is a slowdown currently , and 2017 is forecasted for even fewer sales than 2016. Pull up the stock market ticker for the company your Interested in and do research.

It seems to be the trend for several years now. Wish it wasn't so. Race entries have been declining for years.

I don't thinks it's a "recession" thing at all- For example in WI here spend a weekend in the northwoods snowmobiling and there are tons of new $10k+ sleds that were pulled up north in 24' enclosed trailers by new GMC Denali diesels..plenty of money to go around.

10k on a bike plus 2k to get it ready? Then another 1-2k in gear? Laughing You on some kind of shopping spree?

I paid $6500 for my new left over 450 and all it needed was $60 graphics and I use the same gear I always had...

I think it's more of a lack of riding areas issue rather than the cost.

You can afford it if you put it on your credit card. Worry about that later. When interest rates go look for deals and just charge it.

The cost is definitely playing a factor. Sure, the newest and greatest technology is cool and we all want the best, but MX bikes are being priced right out of existence just like crotch rockets.

MX and sport bikes are supposed to be for young men, 16-24. In the 80's and 90's a guy in that age range could work a small town job, even after school, and scrape together the money to buy a YZ125 or a GSXR-750. Neither is possible anymore. Around here, I almost never see sport bikes anymore. In the 90's they were all over the place. Muscle cars have kind of gone the same route, except old guys with money will still buy them. Camaros and Mustangs were originally "econo" racers. Now they are out of the reach of young guys and gray-hairs drive them. Like going to the MX track.. more Vet riders than kids nowadays.

FGR01 hit on it. More vet ride4s than kids...Kids these days can't lift their eyes away from whichever gadget they're playing with long enough to be bothered to go outside. It's a sad existence.

Skateboarding participation is also in decline, and a skateboard is still relatively affordable.

That's because skating reached a peak. Them the new fad came along after the sport sold out. And the core fans are left.

For me besides age it's lack of riding areas. Living just north of Atlanta all MX tracks are at least an hr and a half away. When I own a bike I like to ride 3 - 4 times a week at least. Ironic Atlanta has arguably the biggest SX every year but there are no tracks nearby. I was so spoiled growing up in Western Australia 10 minutes from a track and 20 - 45min from 4 others to mix it up from sand to hard pack. If only I could open a track close to Atlanta. Thankfully we do have a lot of MTB tracks around here.

Blame share holding companies, in the UK over £26 billion went out to share holders in the top 250 companies in just the first quarter of 2016.
The companies are run by accountants that answer to shareholders, who squeeze every penny out of the workers by making companies " more efficient!"
Sorry for the rant, but I feel it needs to even out a bit when the top 100 richest have more money than the rest of us mortals combined!

For me , it's not the cost, it's that there isn't much racing anymore. Combining juniors racing with seniors racing killed the sport. Nobody wants to spend a shit load of $$$ to just sit around all day waiting for their 5 minute race....
The sport here is run by the most brain dead fuckwits to ever draw breath....it's dead .

Over here the vet and kid classes are full. While MX1 and MX2 has empty gates. 20 somethings either dont have the money to ride or just are not interested anymore.

Hold on a sec. What do you do when the credit card bill comes in?

If the 100% tariff on Euro bikes come in that will definitely impact the industry.

It could also be that the vets are the fathers of the kids that are racing, I'm sure that a lot of them are. I don't have any kids and I will NEVER attend another race meeting that has any junior classes whatsoever. That effectively means I will never race again. I would really love to go racing again...but not the way they do it nowadays....bloody poofter sport! Designed to best suit knitters ...
