Hypothetical question:

If you were Tomac's mechanic. how would you have prepared his bike for a mud race? What would you have done differently for the 2nd moto (after the 1st moto dnf)
I've been down this road many times. Not much you can do.....you Pray for a holeshot.

2nd moto (after 1st moto dnf):
I would have run a stock engine and ecu with the rest of the mud gear. (*they probably dont even carry a stock engine and ecu)
Then I would have made sure Eli knows our bike is vulnerable and this is all about survival and hedging our bets for the day, treat it like a queen, dont use the clutch much.

Top 5 is better than a 2nd dnf in a row (highly probable using the same set up twice)

*I ASSuME the team protocol would not get this personalized &radical - and the mechanic simply changed the broken bits and carried on

Woulda put a stock motor in.. should have more reliability in those conditions.. go down 4 teeth on the rear sprocket.. install a roost boost..Would have kicked the tires to check air pressure and then tell the rider to let er rip.. and crack open a beer as we head to the starting line

I agree. Mud or no mud, the setup remains the same:

I’d have filled the fuel, lubed the chain and said “I’m going to the bar”.

My pit board would have said SAVE BIKE right from lap one, every lap, nothing else.

Best advice so far. I would go one step further and tell him to Breath as well

De-tune the engine as much as I could to make it more reliable/run cooler. Someone suggested a stock engine and even that is a pretty darn good idea.

Tell him to watch Anstie or any euro for a couple of laps and study his gear selection and the momentum He carries with les revs
Let the bike lug and Minimise clutch actions

At the expense of less income sign with a team that will let him ride the MXON ( so us euros can enjoy his talent once year) and Supply a bike That will hold up in mud
What about HEP Suzuki

Serious question here. Would the size of the radiators be limited by some rule?

The MX guys need to go see what desert and Enduro teams are doing. Oversized radiators, high pressure rad cap, ceramic coat the exhaust, cooling fan, radiator socks, soak the bike in mud-off, pack every nook and cranny with foam, stiffer suspension, particularly up front, hand guards, richen the mixture a touch, and let it rip!

You don't think they're doing that already? Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Husky and KTM have been racing motocross and offroad at the factory level all over the world since the 1960s. You don't think they acquired any of this knowledge in that time?
Double DNF? Apparently not..

Design a seal for the clutch master cylinder that fails after he lets it out on the start.

This much extra power in muddy conditions!? You are a savage!

That’s a team decision. Not a mechanics decision..

Foam at all the usual places, something I didn't saw at many bikes.

I'd be working hard on a 3 or 4 layer button operated, independant battery power supply tear off system for the radiator louvres.

We can't even get a new, improved tear-off system for tear-offs.

Or a fan driven cooling air duct that doesn’t grab air (and mud..) from the front. Pull air from a rear facing intake so it doesn’t clog immediately.

I'd adjust the clickers, swap the pull rods, and change the ignition curve for a little extra torque....then pass out stickers to fans

Sabotage the clutch lever so that it broke the first time he tried to fry . . . err... use it.

Rather large fan and duct required for 60 hp?
