If you want to design an engine yourself, what about getting a masters degree in mechanical engineering first? For instance, can you design gears? Can you design cilinder head bolts? Do you understand thermodynamics? Can you analyse lubrication regimes? Can you do a FEM analysis and really know what these answers mean to you?

You are right about the robots however this is not for single piece production. Those welding robots you mean cost a lot of money and take a relatively long time to program. One off products are much better off hand welded.

There propably was a small crack near the threads on the shaft. This crack propagated through the material as time and load passes. Maybe you can get a new one if you show them the crack.
