Always enjoy when the postman brings something new and exciting. About a year ago the youngest son dug out the remains of a $10.00 mini storage abandonment 1979 CR125 and decided that after ten years of robbing parts, "we" needed to build it. So off he goes into the good parts and digs out the most expensive set of forks known to man, the massive 44mm Fox Factory Forx for the front and also emerged with matching remote reservoir Foxes for the rear. All that was lacking was a swingarm worthy of the suspension components. First choice would have been a Fox arm but I had other visions. Visions which will end up leading to the Fox shocks not working and other shocks will have to be sourced as soon as we get this beauty mounted up and calculate the proper shock specs. So, here is the hand built KLP Racing Mugen Replica swingarm and chain guide. Good to know there are people out there willing to build trick stuff for money when others are out occupying something for nothing.Smile

So newmann, you don't appear to be afraid to re-make some factory stuff. Since that swingarm is definitely 'non-standard', why not do some things to make it even more special/modern? What I'm talking about is, why not make the ends where the axle attach more like the modern ones. The old eyelets were trick then and the rest of that work of art is trick now but the first thing I noticed when I looked at it was "why not slotted axle blocks with adjusting screws. Widen out the ends of the tubing a little and recess a machined block up inside for welding, then tap the end plate for an 8mm thread.

It's way cool as-is, and if you were just looking to keep the whole retro-factory thing, I understand. But if there are ideas of riding it, why not make it more user friendly since you're already pouring a mint into it?

You make it sound as if I start threads bashing riders. Go stand in the corner Gibby.

Nope, cut 9mm out of the upper tube to correct the geometry for the 21 incher. The old Al Baker mod!

Those ‘80 side plates? Personally I liked the way mine handled best with the straight 21 for 23 swap. Turned a lot better.

Looks nice.
I am curious why it is a bit shorter than the other two in the picture? Trying to improve turning or???

Yeah, I went with the 1980 CR125 seat (taller in the front, less of that swayback mule look!) and stock 1980 FIM style side panels. The front fender is from the 1978-80 CR250, a lot better look than the droopy looking 79 CR125. My son is about 5'6" so I'm setting the bike up to run 10 1/2 inches of travel front and rear. Should have a really nice stance to it compared to the highly goofy looking 79 seen here.

Michael, you have three swingarms for one bike now? Obviously this means you need two more projects as I can't see any reason to sell any of those.....Wink

No, I have very little compared to some of the Honda nuts out there. I do know a few garages and storage units I'd like to pilfer through if given the opportunity.

It wasn't a shot at you...at all. It was merely pointing out for others what a good thread looks like. Some people seem to have forgotten. Smile

Har! This gets my vote for Post of the Year! Gotta give the whole thread serious consideration for Thread of the Year.

Newmann, I enjoy reading about your projects. The Fox forks bring back memories of the best handling bike I ever had - a 1982 RM250 Full Floater with the aforementioned 44mm Fox Factory forks. If I could have kept one bike from my past, that would have been the one.

I just recently finished a CR500AF project with Showa A Kit suspension, alum. fuel tank, and assorted other custom fabricated goodies and I think the finishing touch is going to be one of KLP's coke bottle swingarms. I've got to save up just a little bit more for that "icing on the cake".

Can't wait to see your 125 finished and ready to rip.
