It will be a money pit. besides any abuse on that undercarriage that can make it go bad, age also plays a role. After a few years the rubber on the wheels and tracks gets brittle and falls apart. The people that designed that undercarriage worked in the snowmobile business if that will tell you anything. The few companies around here that still have a MTL Cat or ASV only use them when they need to an have deep pockets. If you do buy it keep it clean an out of the sun.

And squatch is 100% correct on renting before you buy...another thing to consider is dealer support and location ...if you can't get parts you are stuck. Some things to consider: Get an oil analysis done before you buy a machine ..it will tell you if there's damage to the Hydro system. New tracks will run about $4,000 USD Get an...
I have a cat 259d. With my minimal experience I'd say get the largest ctl you can. I wouldn't touch that asv style CAT ...it will cost you a fortune to fix...and you will have to fix that undercarriage sooner rather than later. Find a takeuchi 10 or 12...those things are solid. My cat has been decent but has cost...

I would recommend against owning (but especially buying used) any Cat model that ends in a 7, or any ASV model. The reason being is that they have a suspended undercarriage that is exponentially more expensive to maintain/replace, and they don't grade as well. If you want CAT, the models that end with a 9 have a more rigid undercarriage that will be less maintenance, grade better, but ride a little rougher. Without knowing many details, I would recommend the 65-75hp range, with approx 72" width. If you're looking at Cat, this would be a 259/279/289. There is also vertical...

The thing is, that a bikes value will not be the same for everybody. Some may value the lack of sound more than others. For some ,the lack of sound might save them 100's of hours of driving each year. For some the little bit of saved time on maintanance will mean they can ride VS not having time to ride. On the high end, You might get 3000 charge cycles from a battery . So lets say 1500 cycles, A battery costs $6K right now. Chances are that when the Varg is in need of a new one, You...

You should probably figure in the cost difference between the bikes too. Then figure if you were to buy last years model on closeout which you cannot do on a Stark and won't be able to for some time. You should depreciate the battery on the Stark for every charge since you are essentially doing that to the IC engine bike by figuring in the maintenance. The Stark maintenance costs will all come due in one big shot when the battery dies. It may still be less expensive than an IC bike, but I haven't seen a replacement battery cost...

Bottom line is you guys don’t decide jack shit about what stays in the Moto-related section, it’s Vital’s sandbox and we’re all just playing in it. If you want to feel special and pretend that your opinion of what belongs here caries any more weight than mine you’re entitled to live in that alternate reality, but you’re bringing a lot of unnecessary disappointment on yourself. If you want to have nothing but 2T vs 4T, Deegan/Jett, and US/Euro threads then have at it, I’ve had my fill of those topics so I’ll be an adult and just not click on...

Yes there is an e-bike forum and this thread would fit nicely there . But bikes like the Varg and the Honda Trey Canard raced has brought the subject more front and center lately so there's going to be some bleed over . This is the forum that gets the most views obviously . Will it last ? Who knows ? If enough show interest you'll see more , it not it will take care of itself . There's an old school forum also but no one seems to mind a posts about 80s , 90s , or early 2000s...

The range will improve. For example, a 2013 Tesla Model S gets around 200-250 miles per charge. The same Tesla Model S in 2023 gets around 320-400 miles per charge. The aftermarket is also eventually going to catch up as it did with the Surrons/Talarias offering longer range batteries, different controllers etc. For safety reasons, I really hope a sound module of some kind comes into the market. A few racers have said it’s a bit dangerous to not be able to hear the Stark around them on track (maybe a horn or something will become mandatory) but I can...

I have an even better idea: just change "Moto-Related" to "Most Vital" and let the popularity of any given thread decide whether or not it resides in that category. The problem with doing this, of course, is that almost every popular thread right now involves some aspect of electric.

The most hilarious part of all this is, whiny, teary-eyed, lip-quivering little twerps like you are tired of reading about electric bikes NOW. You seem completely oblivious to the fact that you're like a guy who's tired of swimming in the ocean who's about to get hit by a series of 100-foot tsunamis. THIS? THIS RIGHT NOW? This is the calm before the storm. You'll be drowning in electric in a year or two, and it will only get "worse" from there on out. So grab that downvote button and press away while you still have the energy to do...

This was me .. wasn't excited at all about E bikes and was all machismo about it: there's no sound, what about the smell of race gas, I'm a tough guy and ride gas! Ha! Then I took 1 lap on the varg ... All smiles now Can't wait to add one to my garage

I believe the hate of e-bikes is because people think they are not affordable and the range is an issue. I believe most those people go to the track and ride like 10-20 laps tops, an e-bike can do WAY more than that. The affordable part is coming, as company’s like E&C are make powerful motors affordable, Lithium King make motor mounts for different bikes and Eon Lithium is building custom batteries. More companies are coming too. This is just the start of 70’s style Moto coming back. People building bikes instead of just throwing overpriced billet at it. I...

The Varg is a compelling bike in so many ways, don't get me wrong, but the bike(s) I'm much more curious about are the ones like the Surron. It's THESE bikes that could truly return the sport back to it's roots, back to a time when an average guy could buy a Yamaha DT1, strip off the lights, put a fork brace on the front and a set of Konis on the back, and go racing with their buddies in a grassy field somewhere. That guy and his buds had no fools-gold thoughts of becoming multi-millionaire pros, they were just...

The only people that have strong negative views of E bikes are the people who have never ridden one. I have yet to find anyone that has ridden a Stark and complained. Anyone that asks, I let ride my Varg. It never fails, riders are always blown away at how good it is.

IDK what people are so mad about. A 19 y/o had a perfect outdoor season in the premier class. That's insane. Sorry it didn't happen when we were all in our own teenage years (which, as everyone knows,THE best era of MX is always whatever era it was when one was a teenager), but I don't see how you can argue against it. He was the best in the world, in the premier class, period. He backed it up with a moto win at MXoN. Yes, other teenagers have shown absolutely blazing speed. Others have had insane races like Villo...
