Its only a small amount of added inertia, depending on sprag clutch location, and they could surely lighten the flywheel to suit.

No rocket science here, literally every other 450 manufacturer figured it out long ago.

Agree its a bit less easy on an existing engine, from an  engineering, cost and production rules (?) standpoint. But for an OEM...

Feels like Suzuki can't be bothered - like every year someone says - "no point, we have a totally new engine package coming in 202X". Then they just serve up BNG, year after year.

It is only a very small amount of inertia, but these are also pros that notice every little thing.

Some teams have gone as far as total loss electrical systems (no stator under the flywheel) to get the inertia feel where a rider wants it.

Not that I meant to, but I found out I could make it about 50min of riding on my Husky 450FC without the stator functioning at all. And this was with a battery that isn't as good as some of them out there now!

The kick start lever should wind up a spring that disengages at a certain tension and spins the motor.  Easy to kick, spins at the correct speed like an e-start, but no battery and no starter.

I own the same bike. That battery isnt going anywhere except zip tied to the fender. This thing is already tight.

It would go in the air box most likely.

It should also have a comically loud spring noise when it fires, followed by a fart noise when the bike starts.

As I said, lighten the flywheel. There is zero need to add inertia.

Correct, your ignition will run for a long time off a small battery. A starter motor won't though! Ditto EFI fuel pumps.

Rocon had that starting stuff figured out. And it probably saves weight over a kickstarter.

SHOTGUN STARTER

Wonder if the AMA will be cool if Ken and Ando pack a couple of rounds for the A1 main?

Um... Kawasaki.

Lets not pretend that Suzuki was developing the bike at the same rate as other manufacturers, and only paused in the last few years.

It’s pretty unbelievable that they seem to be trying to do it, but they can’t figure out how to make it good. Like how bad could the first one they tried out have been that Roczen decided to keep the kickstart? The kickstart is a guarantee loss of some points during the season and Roczen can’t afford that. He will 100% stall or tip over and lose positions just because of the kickstart in at least 1 race.

I mean pretty hard I'm guessing, Roczen ditched the e-start in 2018 on the Honda because of how it affected handling. And that was made with the help of Honda Japan and full factory budget.

The weirdest part of this, to me, had always been the short-lived Suzuki RMX450Z that came equipped with electric start and kick start. Presumably, the engine cases would have been similar enough to adapt it to the RM-Z.

Shockingly, no.

The RMX cases were not only different, but so was the cylinder (cam chain tensioner had to be moved to accommodate the starter location) and thus the head was different.

To use the RMX cases required the cylinder and thus head, which did NOT have the same port/valve setup as the RMZ and supposedly would hinder performance.

And really, even with e-start who was going to want to race a 250lb without fuel RMZ?

I’m hearing pull start for ‘28. Wind-up mechanism in ‘29 and, a revolutionary bump-start for ‘30. *According to sauces familiar with Suzuki’s HQ in Costa Rica. IMG 0804 0

The memory fades gently into twilight, but I even faintly recall a day long of yore when a kickstart bike was the reigning SX champ.

Wow, that bike looks so much better than the current one. Of course it probably pushing 275lbs too, lol.

AI Overview

The 2017 Suzuki RMX450Z has a claimed curb (wet) weight of 272 lbs (123.5 kg), and Suzuki does not officially publish a separate dry weight spec for this model. [1, 2]

Key Weight and Fuel Specifications
  • Curb Weight (Wet): 272 lbs / 123.5 kg (includes all fluids and a full fuel tank)
  • Fuel Capacity: 1.6 gallons (6.2 liters) [1, 2]

If you are trying to calculate the weight without fuel, subtracting the weight of 1.6 gallons of gasoline (roughly 9.6 lbs) brings the estimated dry weight to approximately 262.4 lbs. Would you like help comparing its weight to other 2017 off-road or enduro models?

I've rode RM-Z's plenty and spent a good amount of time on an RM-X. I wanted to keep an RM-X forever for my offroad bike because I knew it would never leave me stranded in the mountains of Colorado. Problem is it always felt heavy to me. I had a different exhaust and ECU so it ran great but it just felt heavy at times. Mostly putting it on a stand or picking it up off of the ground. Still love those bikes though.

I recall, Jamie at Twisted commented that the older X cases didn’t permit the use of newer/better engine components…in other words: they’re not compatible.

Even better, remember when most users on this board made fun of KTM for adding e-start and complained about how dumb and pointless it was? There was a lot of "If you can't kickstart your own bike, you shouldn't be riding." LOL

Referring to an RMX with all the lights stripped, which is what an RMZ with the RMX cases and estart would have weighed you moran.

Estart is a definite advantage when a rider drops a bike and has to restart to get going again.

Using a kicker can completely smoke a rider if the bike doesn't fire right away, their heart rate is already high and repetitive kicking as I said can smoke a rider.

Estart adds roughly 10 lbs, the zuk is already heavy, I'm sure that can be shaved down a pound or two but even at 8 lbs that's a loss of bout 1 hp

What's really interesting is in comparison to the new Honda that had 9 lbs shaved off in just one model year.

Zuk is a bit behind in technology.

8-10lb heavier bike is a "definite advantage" now?

Kick starting a bike is physically exhausting?

Next thing you'll tell me is how the govt leak-proof gas cans improved the experience.

E-start is 5 lbs in a very standard Japanese implementation.

We know this because the 2017 and 2018 CRF450 are the same bike except that the optional electric start kit became standard in 2018. No other major component changes. The bike gained just under 5 lbs.
