Bench Racing | Columbus SMX Qualifying

9/12/2026 6:41am

1st Qualifying cancelled. Mike P said “hopefully” they get out there the 10:30 qualifying. I really don’t want to see racing on a blind track they rode yesterday when it was dry.

I'd rather watch some replays from the 80's or 90's during this delay than from this year.

So they issued a seek shelter warning because of lightning, but you think the track crew should risk it so we have a decent track come race time? I actually hate that I have to repeat this so much, but some of you are way too tough when it’s someone else’s body on the line.

I don’t think anyone was suggesting they run out and tarp it during the storm. I think we are baffled they didn’t have it covered last night after practice (which they may have done). Not having the tarps on before it started raining is the part I don’t understand.

What's the joke?

Probably the track crew and anyone in charge of the covers with half a brain.

Like the track crew can control when lightning strikes...I'm sure you guys probably blame the airlines when your flight is delayed by weather...

Muddy MX races are to be expected, but muddy SX races suck balls.

Are you being sarcastic?

You cannot tell me the people in charge of the racing surface aren't watching the weather radar?

Seriously the dumbest thing I have heard.

They don’t issue the seek shelter warnings because of the threat of lightning, they issue them because the lightning is happening. They uncovered the track because they can run practice in the rain, they left it uncovered because they can’t replace the tarps once the lightning starts for the safety of the track crew

The mental gymnastics some of you goofs do to try and justify why you think your thought process is the only option really bogles my mind sometimes.

Because of the lightning in the area...It's the stadium that makes the lightning rules for insurance reasons so nobody can be in the open while lightning is in the area.

Rain in September in the middle of Ohio, who would guess?

I wonder what the plan is if they can’t even run the Wildcard/LCQ races? Draw spoons?

Mikey P will probably just use his unlimited discretion and pick a winner for each class.

My guess is lightning should be out the area in the next 30 min. So then a 30 min wait time. Bikes on track at 12:00 local time. They run Wildcard/LCQs and then we get a mudder. Hopefully they don’t cut times or motos. If they cut anything, cut the SMX Next races and any extra stuff they had planned. Sucks for them but they aren’t the main attraction and should not be treated as if they are.

Edit: They are filling the seeded riders based on points. Wildcard racers will go at 1:30 ET.

No qualifying, so the LCQ guys are just screwed and came for nothing?
