No doubt, Nevada and Arizona tyre shops are wringing their hands at the influx of business.
And reading the article, fucking Michelin supports this.
The same Michelin (BFG) that shut down American manufacturing, and high tailed it back to france.
Just dropped $2,000 on new FalkenRT offroad rubber, and alignment.
BFG wasn't even considered as a choice.
So this is how they intend to offset the excess tire wear associated with EV's.
A solution in search of a problem. Simply slap on a new set of Michelins, to the tune of $1,200 - just to save $179 in fuel over the life of the tires (quoted from the article). The "Fuel Efficient" O.E. tires that come on new cars dont last worth a damn. Furthermore - why wouldnt California want the tax revenue from the gasoline being sold?
It sounds like a ‘workaround’ would just be to supply the OEMs with the same tire sold to the public. Or maybe make them completely different models so that there’s no OEM ‘version’ to baseline it with and it wouldn’t need to match.
I think that the measure is well meaning, but it probably should have just been a tire rating system instead of a mandate like this. Have an efficiency rating on the tires and let the consumer decide whether they want to choose the one that should theoretically give them the highest MPGs. Maybe eliminate the duplicate tire designations between OEM tires that are built to improve MPGs and the consumer tires that are not identical to those.
This sounds like ‘well intentioned’ action that could/should have been handled better with less of a mandate than it is.

You can bet your ass that skinner, the woman gavin put in charge of this, drives a Prius with tyres just about that size. Only narrower.
There is a BIG exclusion list. Anything 10ply or greater is excluded. Some 8ply tires also can hit the 122 load index. Lots of light truck tires also are speed rated Q (99mph) so those are excluded from the regs too depending on what the definition of "large off road tire" actually is.

As i understand it they want low friction (aka traction)/low fuel consumption tyres... my question is if you lower friction/rolling resistance doesn't it also mean you elongate stopping distance of the car? You can't have cake and eat it too. So basically sacrificing safety for miniscule co2 emission reduction.

1986 2wd Tacoma - 21 / 25.

A whopping 1 MPG increase on the highway.
Versus a1986 2wd Isuzu turbo diesel - 35 / 44 🙄

They’ve apparently never taken a mountain pass or rocky forest service road on stock tires. Guranteed flat with most stock truck tires.
Oh here’s another fun fact about the 40 year old 40+ MPG mini truck we can’t buy here anymore. They came with an almost 8’ long bed (7.7 feet). I’m dead serious when I say every person in this whole state needs to stand together and say fuck you, you clueless over educated beyond your intelligence dumbass brainwashed dipshits, NO, we’re not playing by your stupid tire rules, and we don’t care what tires are exempt or not.
