Not sure if some of you realize, but you can just scroll past something you don't like. It's really that easy.

What’s crazy to me (and I first thought of this years ago) Is this board has turned into what we are seeing all over the real world.   It’s either you see it my way or you are a complete idiot and I can just say whatever I want from behind a keyboard.

There is no respect for anyone that sees things different.

Example -

I can do without the antics and some things Deegan says and does, sure.  I can also respect him as a beast of a rider who actually had an amazing 450 debut outdoors season. I can see the value he brings to the sport, I don’t always agree with it, yet in the big scope of things, it’s pretty damn amazing where is at and what he has done. Now, I never post here anything in these threads about him because no matter what I say, how middle of the road I articulate it, someone will say I’m a “nut-hugging Deegan lover, idiot who doesn’t know shit”. OR I’m a “Deegan hater who doesn’t get it”.

Same thing is happening in society as a whole.  Sure, I believe men don’t belong in women’s sports.  But to some, that just means I am “trans hating scumbag that doesn’t understand”

We have lost the respect for others first mentality, the ability to agree to disagree and move on without being so triggered. It’s either you think like me or you are an idiot, Moran. It’s everywhere.

I always just try to post what I would actually say in person.  I would never disrespect someone in person, so why would I post something that would get me punched on here?  I think people just don’t do that. They say and act tough, but would never say or act like that in person. Some say they would, but in reality, being behind a keyboard and anonymous empowers a lot of people.

I think that’s why this place used to be special.  No matter how heated it got, if you actually ran into a board member in person, it usually ended with a beer, a bench racing session and a laugh. Man, I used to battle Bobbym and even EIdave on here, but it was actually a pleasure to banter with them. Sometimes, it even changed the way I was thinking about things.

We live in a polarized world. The term "divide and conquer" comes to mind in the real sense, not in the way smooth brains use it today.

First of all, I think the 'Downvote' should be removed, some people seem to take it in a negative way and then the thread is off rail... I read a year or two ago some member who said 'the downvote everything because its fun to piss people off'... well that is just something wrong in your head if you spend your time on Vital 'just to piss people off', this would be easily fixed, just remove the thumbs down...

Secondly, much quicker bans, if clearly someone is just here to 'teast and be a bully or piss people off' just ban quickly.

Now, society is very polarized nowadays, but the feeling I get of the US that it's even worse... then poor Deegan gets in the middle of these two polars... you can be of many opinions but it's just ruins it for everyone if every thread becomes a fights between the two parties...just ban again quickly.

...then I understand the old timers, you might get irritated of this new crowd, sometimes they ask really stupid questions, but the thing is, if 'we' want to grow the sport there will be more people who didn't even know what Motocross was 10years ago.

I agree with you on the downvotes. It brings an element of negativity which is entirely unnecessary. Typically, if someone believes something strongly enough to post their thoughts on a forum they are highly unlikely to change their P.O.V because a number of people downvote it. They're more like to come and argue back to make their point hear. again. and again.. Remove that element of negativity, let them voice their opinion whether right or wrong and move the F on...

I’ll respectfully disagree. The downvote gives a feedback loop that doesn’t require full engagement, and it’s not like someone punched your mom. It’s just virtual “nope, don’t agree” sign.

I’d prefer it wasn’t anonymous though.

Yes to all.

Culturally we are both comically aggressive and incredibly thin skinned. When people started saying they were “triggered” as a reason to stop discussion of something, I knew we were hosed..

Exactly this. The vast majority of people I would hope at least likely occupy a reasonable middle ground, yet typically online discourse and now real life treats anything short of full alignment as adversarial. You can be 99% in agreement and still be characterized as if you hold the opposite position. Nuance is discarded, intent is ignored, and the exchange collapses into a binary “with us or against us” framework lacking any eye for context that generally leadings to trolling and low‑effort memeing.

That has been my thought on it. If we are going to have a downvote option it doesn’t need to be anonymous. Either get rid of it completely or don’t make it anonymous. The anonymous downvotes gives power to the cowards.

I read 90% more than I post and only post if I have a meaningful contribution.

That poll someone ran a bit back about the ages of everyone here was pretty surprising. My presumption was the vast majority were a bunch of angry teens & twenty something’s…

I’ve reported a couple of especially egregious posts to Michael but nothing gets done..

100% though if we were all in a room together the vast majority of us would be very respectful toward each other and generally get on well.

For some reason when humans have a degree of anonymity we have a tendency to act like wankers.

I do that all the time, scroll past all tbe crap.

The problem is that the Moderators are slipping.

More than half the posts are stupid garbage with loads of personal attacks. That's not the way Vital used to be.

The point I'm trying to make is that it's getting worse and we are losing good dudes because it it.

Ps. ...and I ain't fighting with you Jaun, what you said is about the best thing one can do.

I know you are Boom, I've had that many accounts banned because people don't like what I say sometimes and I'm one of the OG's on here, I donated a good amount to OC Scotty for his van and when you were stick in Africa with COVID and all of that.

People piss and moan and get other people banned.

What we have to remember is it's not the moderators job, you need to be a man and if you don't like it move on.

Nobody moderates what you see and hear and have to deal with in real life, that's up you me and you and all of us.

This is no different to real life if you don't like it move on and go to another topic.

Now of course there is a line just like in real life, breaking the law and shit like that needs to be stamped out but people shouldn't be banned because others don't like what you say.

Just my 2c

Here's what I noticed from my semi newbie perspective. jaun is correct. You need a thick skin and be able to walk around the piles of shit without stepping in them. For me I stopped getting into anything political, it's way too easy to get triggered by someone who seems to make that their goal. Ok fine, no politics. Then it starts happening in moto threads, like Manny brought up in his post. Then after awhile I got to where instead of reading most topics, I'll scroll past most threads unless it's something that seems interesting, then if that turns to shit at some point you say fuck this, I aint got time for this shit. Just like Hammer. We have enough drama and bullshit in our lives already, I can only speak for me, but I come in here to talk and read about moto / dirt bike / mtb / 2 wheeled shit. And things that revolve around those things. And non moto to fuck around and make jokes most of the time, and sometimes read about someone going through some real life drama and maybe try to encourage or relate with them in a positive way somehow. But when it gets to the point that every time you log onto the site, and you leave in a worse mood than when you checked in ?  At that point why bother.  🤷‍♂️ See ya Hammer take care amigo moto on !

You guys say just scroll by what is bad...well, that is like telling someone to avoid the potholes in a road that is progressively getting more potholes because the county wont do any roadwork.

Posters are always coming and going from this forum. Perfectly evidenced by the fact that Old School Moto used to be one of the biggest draws on this site, now it's barely active.

But won't that just create more animosity? "Why did you downvote me you jerk?" Then proceeds on a vengeance crusade downvoting and shit-talking that user for a few weeks. What good does the negativity bring? I can't think of a single thing.

I’ll tell you one thing, riding a dirt bike sure makes you care less about what other people online have to say about riding a dirt bike. I’m convinced 99% of people on the forum no longer ride and have lost sight of that. So get off the electronics, get off your ass, and go ride again. It’s a simple thing, really.
