Deegan vs Lawrence (Hunter)

Everyone wanting to compare Deegan to Jett, Deegan doesn’t even come close to Hunters rookie season.

Yep. The cleanest comparison is Hunter Lawrence’s 2024 rookie 450 Pro Motocross season vs Haiden Deegan’s 2026 rookie 450 season. Deegan has one round remaining, so this is through Budds Creek, Round 10.

Hunter was ridiculously consistent in his first season. Through the first ten rounds he had finished on the overall podium nine times, and his only miss was a fourth at Washougal.

Deegan has now put together six podiums through ten rounds, including five 3rds and a 2nd, but has had more off weekends. At Budds Creek yesterday he went 2–4 for third overall, his sixth podium of the season.

Hunter’s complete rookie season

Hunter went:

2 – 2 – 2 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 2 – 4 – 2 – 2 – 4

That’s an average overall finish of about 2.64.

And the crazy part is that Hunter never actually won an overall in 2024 despite finishing second in the championship. He was basically permanently on the box.

Deegan so far

Deegan:

5 – 3 – 6 – 3 – 6 – 3 – 2 – 3 – 3 – 3

Average overall finish: 3.7.

So with Ironman remaining, even if Deegan wins the finale, Hunter’s rookie season still clearly wins on consistency.

There’s another important difference too: Deegan is only 20. Hunter was 24 during his rookie 450 outdoor campaign. So Deegan is doing this considerably earlier in his career.

What I think is most interesting

The hype around Deegan can make it seem like he’s having an unprecedented rookie 450 season, but Hunter’s rookie season was actually substantially better on results.

Hunter:
9 podiums in first 10 rounds → 90% podium rate

Deegan:
6 podiums in first 10 → 60% podium rate

And Hunter’s worst result all year was fourth. That’s pretty wild for a rookie.

On the other hand, Deegan has shown some exceptional individual rides. At Spring Creek he came from essentially 40th to 4th in a moto, and Racer X calculated that through Unadilla his average finishing deficit to the moto winner was about 30.8 seconds, heavily affected by first-turn crashes at RedBud and Washougal.

So I’d currently rate the rookie seasons:

Hunter 2024: 9/10
Deegan 2026 so far: 7.5–8/10

But Deegan being four years younger makes his trajectory particularly interesting.

Hunter was 24/25 when he debuted on a 450. Deegz is 20. It definitely makes a difference

Certainly helped Hunter that Jett was absent for half of that MX season with injury.

Yep, the hype is Alessi levels for DngrBoi. Americans must have a hero to root for, this time around you got this kid. Enjoy it, because when Davies, Kitchen and Shimoda move up its gunna be even more tough on #38.

Let’s not forget that Hunter won the 250 ProMotocross title in 2023, which was the year Deegan debuted in the class.

I dont hate Dngrboi in particular. I hate the smug juvanile behaviour displayed thinking its cool. Its dumb actually.

Kitchen gave back what he got. Deegan shouldve learnt at the 250 WSX final last year when he broke his colar bone while riding like a total fwit trying to run Jo off tha track, while millions watched on tv. Just plain dumb.

I already said you cant compare Hunter at 24/25 and Deegan at 20yrs old. Hunter was way more seasoned moving up to a 450. He also has far superior technique than Deegz, just like 18yr old Cole has already.  Game over when Cole moves up

Correct. Dngrboi should be eyeing up a circus act post early moto retirement after a whole moto trying to pass Barcia.

I think everyone is arguing slightly different points at this stage 😂

If we're talking strictly rookie 450 outdoor results — Hunter wins. Easily.

  • 🥇 Hunter: 9 podiums in his first 10
  • 🏁 Deegan: 6 podiums in his first 10
  • 📊 Hunter's consistency was ridiculous.

But the “therefore Deegan isn't really comparable / it's all American hype / he's Alessi 2.0” stuff is where it gets silly.

  • 👶 Deegan is 20 and a rookie
  • 🔥 He's currently 3rd in a 450 class with both Lawrences, Prado, Tomac, Webb, Hampshire, etc.
  • 🤷‍♂️ You don't have to call it a rivalry yet — that's fair.
  • But pretending he's irrelevant because he hasn't spent a season battling Hunter for a championship is basically arguing semantics.

And yeah — you can dislike Deegan's personality or riding style. Totally fair.

But the Kitchen incident, social-media stuff, WSX, etc. don't magically make his current 450 results disappear.

So:

➡️ Better rookie season? — Hunter.

➡️ More accomplished 450 guy right now? — Hunter.

➡️ Is Deegan showing enough at 20 that the hype isn't completely manufactured? — Also yes.

Everything beyond that is predicting the future — and as this place has demonstrated approximately 47,000 times, we're apparently all extremely qualified to do that. 😂

His initial 450 debut should have been Supercross so please disregard their error and look to Anaheim 1 as his debut.

Also, he should be on Honda, KTM, or maybe Kawasaki. Yamaha needs a radical new, slimmed down 450 with a classic race-forward aesthetic. Their bike was wrong for James Stewart and is still wrong for Deegan, and that’s 17 years of this. Yamaha - give Deegan a sleek bike that looks like a classic supercross weapon. Tomac felt great going to KTM and it wasn’t just about the new bike but what he was leaving.

The 0 moto wins is understandable but not even a real lap led (I’m sure some will give him the quarter lap at Unadilla but any moto fan knows the truth) with hole shots is disappointing. I’m so waiting for a fast and furious “I almost had you” when he does get a couple laps led

How was it an error?  He got better this year, and probably made over a million in win-title bonuses all in. Going for another title at 20 was the right move, no matter the name on the back of the jersey.

The funny thing is that the bros could literally not even turn up this weekend and Deegan still couldn't do a Bradbury for the title.

Yep, the hype is Alessi levels for DngrBoi. Americans must have a hero to root for, this time around you got this kid. Enjoy it, because when Davies, Kitchen and Shimoda move up its gunna be even more tough on #38.

All the guys he T boned off the track, or he cut the track beating them. Who got the '25 250 WSX title?

Oof, a 3 race series that he won the previous two years isn't the best example of why deegan might struggle against those guys. That said though, I am looking forward to seeing how well they will do in the 450s (and I hope they move up sooner rather than later) and a deeper field that can run at higher speeds will always make for a more unpredictable series.
