Just curios but stock cylinder can't be repaired ?
I have found cheap Yamaha genuine cylinders online. Also had one sleeved by LA sleeve for a couple hundy. I'd pursue those options first instead of an aftermarket cylinder. Just my $.02
Not sure how bad his cylinders is damaged but Millennium can fix pretty much anything and haven't used them for a while but they used to do good work.
Don't go aftermarket he' got kids to feed he needs to keep it safe and reliable

And if he’s got little mouths to feed the cylinder needs to be put on hold until he can either get it fixed correctly or buy a new oem cylinder. Priorities. Our stuff takes a back seat when mouths to feed are involved.

I would say to go fix his OEM cylinder but I have run a Tusk cylinder when I couldnt get an OEM one in time. The tusk cylinder is fin but the ports are a lot smaller than OEM. I just hogged them out and have had zero issues with it.
I believe Millennium could weld that crack and replate it as good as new for less price. An OEM cylinder is great, but it's $809 from Rocky Mountain. A Tusk is $299, but they are out of stock and may be the same as the one on eBay anyway.
Probably not much difference, but that cylinder is made in Taiwan.

From what I've heard, the cylinder/piston on Yz250s last a very long time.
For that reason, I would go with OEM. If you had to replace the cylinder often, it would be worth considering alternatives.
But with OEM, the bike is going to run how it was designed to run, ports will be in the right location and the right size, and OEM quality.
It would be great if he can find a good condition used cylinder. But if they're asking too much for it, it might be worth going new.
What about those companies that buy new bikes, then sell them for parts? Aren't the parts around 50% of retail?
My other concern is whether whatever damaged the cylinder, also damaged the rod/crank. Has he checked that out?
Stank Booty on here has got it. From what I've seen it had a big one previously and has a ProX rod or crank in it and newer piston and head. I imagine they couldn't afford a cylinder and offed it online to our buddy. We're still assessing what to do but the cracks in the casting are bad enough, I wouldn't even try to weld it. It was blowing coolant and he was shopping on his phone before we even left the track.
That’s a common failure on the YZ cylinders, it can be repaired by Millenium or Power Seal.
Do not sleeve the cylinder, heat conducts much less efficiently through the sleeve and especially through the pressed interface between the steel sleeve and the aluminum cylinder. Either get a new cylinder or have it repaired by people who know what they’re doing, there is no cheaping out on this fix.
JFC... Whatever you do, do NOT sleeve it.
Sleeves are vintage bike technology. Don't do it.

2006 03-22 YAMAHA YZ250 OEM ENGINE CYLINDER BORE JUG TOP END NICE!
This cylinder with piston is in excellent condition with minor wear. No cylinder damage, scores, or cracks. Decarboned and vapor honed to restore to new condition. I would advise fresh rings.
