So funny how he was the next big thing when he was crushing the dismal 250 class in AMA but when he finally moved to the premier class, everything that his "haters" said came true. Everyone who knows the sport knew he was in for a real challenge once he moved up, his fanbase hated when anyone said he has a large battle ahead of him and may not even win a race in his rookie 450 year.

Now it's "no rookie has raced against this deep of a field before.' Wake up! Yes, he's good but I think the popularity and 250 class success is distracting a lot of you from where his skill level lies. If you haven't yet, it's time to temper expectations if you want to remain sane. Windham is one of the sport's most beloved racers and he always fell short of the phenom he was up against.

I will say I was one of the ones who thought he’d struggle against the top 10. The only reason he’s zero’d out on the stats is because the Lawrence’s. He’s still empty on the scoreboard but he’s been better than I thought he’d be.

I tried my hand at comparing Deegan’s first eight 450 races to those of the last five multi-time Lites MX champs. I wrestled with what metrics to use and how to create them for the opposition strength slides. I settled with two relatively simple ones. Quick conclusion is Deegan’s competition has been stiffer than any other multi time lites champ has seen. Plenty of other metrics to dig even further though.

Total overall wins faced at round one is the amount of wins from everyone on the gate prior to the evaluated riders’ debut.

This slide shows the weighted average previous-three-season overall finish of the top-10 opponents faced during each rider's first eight 450 starts, weighted by both opponent experience (prior starts over the previous three seasons) and frequency faced. For example, Cooper Webb finished in the top 10 against Haiden Deegan five times during Deegan's first eight 450 starts. Webb's 2023-2025 average overall finish is therefore included five times in Deegan's weighted calculation.

This slide uses the same metric but for average points per round

The last two are really misleading statistics:

You are averaging the results of the top10 over the course of three years before but only if they were in the top ten in 2026?? Why 3 years and not 2 or 4? Why top 10 and not 5 or 8 or 12?

Why do you focus on selecting only riders who had multiple 250 championships? Are we not talking about 450? So anyone (cough dunge, tomac cough) who absolutely dominated in 450ies is not considered. We know success in 250 does not translate into 450 success/domination (stew 😢).

That does not make any sense and just gives you a number. But is it not comparable from category to category (I.e. compared rider). The way riders were able to participate or not over the period is not reflected or seriously affects the average. Think of DNFs. That behaviour has to be similar to be comparable. Also using averages is very prone to be skewed by outliers. I like statistics, it’s part of my job but this is just using something without reflecting on the assumptions behind it.

Stewart did dominate the 450 class sans one rider named Ricky Carmichael. This is evident by the fact that after RC retired in 2007, James went on to have a perfect season in 2008.

Going to be a bunch of bedbugs in this thread saying stuff like, “yeah but if (something that has never happened and is completely hypothetical) then Haiden would actually be considered the fastest guy and this website would explode.”

Can’t hide when the stats are right in front of you like this.

Don’t forget the usual “but bro, Jett had no competition his rookie year!!!1!!111”

Comparison really is the thief of enjoyment - and it's still funny to see the same meltdowns in this thread and across the whole site. Even when someone puts some nice effort into a post. Some can't handle it with their hypothetical match ups and debates. I just enjoy watching the actual current racing some of you should try it.

I picked top ten because that's generally the competitive, factory riders and a very common benchmark. Essentially the evaluated riders' main competition. I chose the last three years because it shows those riders' recent form, I could have picked two or four. Obviously guys like Barcia were winning races ten years ago and aren't anymore, I tried to reflect that. I picked 2+ Lites MX champs because Deegan did and it's a pretty exclusive group. I wanted to compare him to riders that also accomplished that feat. 450s are not considered because I am comparing their first 8 450 races. Why would I consider 450 results later in their careers? Not entirely sure what you are arguing there.

I had the idea to compare Deegan to the other multi time 250 champs and thought of a few quick metrics to measure. There are plenty of ways to dissect and evaluate.

Barcia 2.0. is not that far off.

Barcia finished 3rd his rookie season. Deegan is currently third.

Barcia finished in the top 5 in 11 out of 12 nationals. Deegan currently has 6 top 5 finishes out of 8 with 3 rounds left.

Barcia had 5 overall podium. Deegan currently has 4.

Barcia's best overall was 2nd (x2). Deegan's best overall is currently 2nd (x1).

Whether or not his career will end up similar to Barcia's or not, only time will tell.

I don't see how that's a bad thing.

The most you can draw from those stats is that their rookie 450 seasons are somewhat similar, not that Deegan is Barcia 2.0.

As you said, only time will tell, but Barcia (or Windham for that matter) didn’t enter the 450 class with 2 250 outdoor titles. That alone separates Deegan from them.

Against the worst/inconsistent group of 250 riders in history buddy. Congrats, like I have said. Levi has the 2nd lowest amount of points as a red plate holder in history.

the only thing that matters is wins.....top 10 really doesn't mean much because you don't know how the races undolded. was there a crash, bike issue, or just slow riding.

the biggest issue i see is that Deegs has yet to even lead a lap, nor keep the bros in sight unless on of them crashes late in the race. whenever he presses, he goes back to his 250 riding style over revving the bike and trying to bulldawg it. no wonder the bedbugs think his Yamaha doesn't work properly.....

One interesting thing about all the "overall wins" that Deegan is facing - the one guy he hasn't beat this year is Hunter Lawrence, who I think only had 1 overall win coming in to the season.

This point seems to get lost on many, before this year Hunter was solid but wasn’t a threat if Jett was around, indoors or out. He stepped it up yet others haven’t seemed to make the same progress for some reason

Thanks for putting it together. Where’s the boot licking journalists

So you’re saying that Cole Davies (who doesn’t have the red plate) wins are against one of the weakest fields ever?  Or does that only apply to Deegan?

Here’s a fun fact. Guys like Levi Kitchen, Jo Shimoda, Seth Hammaker, and the like, are the same riders Jett and Hunter Lawrence raced against in the 250 class.

that's true, but they don't race those guys anymore. neither does deegs, but he doesn't really race the bros either......

I got a bit carried away.

thanks for still providing your way of thinking.

Wouldn’t Lamy also qualify for that group? I think he was flip flopping between 125/250 a bit, so maybe not a rookie.

Also Jmart would be the other one with 2 titles but no he has no 450 races to show.

I have said multiple times Cole Davies is the only rider in 250s who isn’t a career 250 rider. Dude has a dnf and will more than likely win the title. Seth still has most laps led and the dude hasn’t finished a lap in over 9 motos. Jett also raced prime forkner and mcadoo who is a shell of what he once was. Deegan is only raced a prime Davies and Davies beat him multiple times lol

So Deegan only raced a "Prime" Davies as you put it and Deegan bested him more than Davies bested Deegan?  Sooooo what is your point again? That Davies isn't as good as Deegan who is 3rd behind Jett and Hunter and "will never win another title" so your hype for Davies is what exactly?

I mean these are your words...

Not gonna lie I kindof expected him to win a moto by now even if one was handed to him by some kindof racing incident...but zero laps lead this far into the season is wild.

I dont think anyone expected Hunter to be beating Jett like this so the chances of BOTH brothers making mistakes in the same race is slim. In SX and MX Hunter made quite the leap over last year.

You dont even know what your point is. Deegan leads Cole in head to head. So do you know your point?

You said everyone Haiden raced wasn't any good, except for Cole, so I reminded you Haiden vs Cole Head to Head Haiden has double his wins. " and by double I am only talking about the times they raced each other.

So again, what is your point?

Also you are wrong. Haiden won a MX title in his 2nd season by 69 points. Cole is in his 2nd season and doesn't have the red plate still. Also, Haiden won SMX his Rookie year. Cole finished his SMX rookie year 23rd.

The problem with you is that you hate Deegan so much you have to tear everyone else down.

So you take credit away from Deegan by saying that he faced a weak 250 field but Davies has faced an even a weaker field.....and has been beat by Deegan more than Davies has beat him when they have raced face to face....but Davies is a better rider....some would call you delusional....Davies is going to be good but to claim he is better than Deegs...so no you have no point....go away 🤡
