Am I losing my mind? Or did something change with the formula of their filter oil? Bought a new bottle, and it seems more runny than what I bought last year. Way more runny. It’s dripping out the bottom of my air box and on the floor of my garage. Anyone else having this problem? Or am I just going too nuts on oil?

Can't speak to the belray but I switched from notoil to fft because it was doing the same thing. Super annoying. Fft seems thinner than notoil but haven't had any issues. Does it seem like it takes more to get the same coverage?
It seems like it takes less because it’s going though the filter easier.
Is there a chance your filter still had cleaning solution in it?
Last time I used the pour on Bel Ray filter oil it was THICK.
Funny, the last two bottles of Bel Ray have seemed thicker than usual to me, and harder to work into the filter. Maybe they're tinkering with viscosity and have now overshot the mark?

I’ve been using it for years, and a recent bottle is just as thicc as it’s always been, especially when the garage is cold. I honestly wouldn’t mind if they thinned it out a bit. Like Crutcher said, if you don’t rinse the cleaning solution out (with Dawn soap and water), that could make it runny.
I used this because my normal stuff was out of stock and while I didn't have trouble applying it, cleaning it out was a disaster. It turned into this thick white paste that just made a huge mess. My rinse water was full of it, and it would never seem to completely wash out..
Maybe its just use error, but compared to how easy the maxima oil cleans up, the rest of the Belray bottle will just sit on the shelf.
No, it’s pretty runny out of the bottle. Usually, I’m used to this stuff having the viscosity of ketchup. That’s what I thought too, I usually dunk the filter in mineral spirits, wring it out, then continue washing it in hot soapy water then let it air dry for 24-48 hours before reinstalling. It’s still sticky as hell though
Always thought that stuff was like tar, opted for Maxima FFT instead. You mave have gotten some from a batch that wasn't mixed properly and missed QC.
If it's too thick you can cut it with mineral spirits to thin it out. If it's too thin, you can thicken it up by exposing it to air for a while to let the carrying agent (once again mineral spirits) dry out a bit. I keep mine in one of the Twin Air tubs and have to play this game from time to time.
I've used it for years and it seems the same to me!
Wat are you cleaning your filter with to start? I use kerosene or mineral spirits first, squeeze out as much as I can and then hot water and Dawn. My FFT cleans out about 98%. The filter stays just a tiny bit oily feeling. I've used both FFT and Maxima off and on and FFT the most. They both seem to work and clean the same for me.
I’ve had that happen with the “biodegradable” filter oil. Think maybe it was No-Toil? If it is that oil you have to use their specific cleaner or you’ll get that gloppy pasty mess.
My filter oil jug is a cocktail of various oils that go into the same container and gets topped off once in a while. Bel ray, for me at least, is now and has always been thick as molasses and hard to spread. FFT is always a little too thin to trust in the desert. So I buy FFT when the cocktail feels a little too sludgy and bel ray when it’s too thin. Various other oils have made their way in there. It’s entirely unscientific and based on whims and superstition.
Used a mineral spirit substitute that I picked up, biodegradable like @eeazye mentioned. Might be a similar catalyst for the bad reaction to the filter oil. I hate how strong the odor is on the maxima cleaning agent, but it works really well, so just sticking to that from now on.
Bel Ray quality control has never been the best, we would get a case in and it was like water and the next case may be like syrup but it always works.
I always keen my BelRay filter oil in a sealed spackle bucket with a little splash of gas to thin it out a little
Filer cleaner wring out
Filter cleaner ring out
Soap and water
Or alternate ?
I can never get bel ray filters truly clean - if I squeeze em there’s always this blueish grey left over sludge .
Guess that’s why it stops dirt so well
Bel Ray foam oil user for 20+ years. Its the only foam filter oil I trust my engines with. I havent had any noticeable inconsistencies, always thick. I have known people who used to much or did not let cleaning solution completely dry and ended up with it running out of the air box.
Pit Row
Use clear mineral spirits to clean your filters. I put 3 gallons in a 5 gallon bucket and it lasts about a year, and thats cleaning 3-5 filters a week on average. I rinse and ring until clean, and just let them dry for a few days in the shop. No soap and water needed. Bel Ray will stain the filters a light blue but you can always still see when they are clean. I always put the filter face down in the cleaning bucket and rotate back and forth like a washing machine to knock the heavy stuff off and let it fall to the bottom
I also have a spackle bucket with diesel in it to get the BelRay out and most of the dirt settles to the bottom before washing the filter with Palmolive dish soap latherted up and rinsed a couple times. That gets all the dirt out.
I had been using Maxima spray filter cleaner, which usually did a good job, followed by soap and water washing. Recently, RMATV was out of Maxima cleaner so I tried the Bel-Ray spray cleaner, and it seems to actually work a little better with less chemical residue smell. I think I'll stick with it for now.
I let the filter sit and dry for a day before installing it, otherwise either FFT or BelRay drains off and makes a sticky mess.
The solvents have changed a lot, the new stuff isn’t nearly as fast drying and consistent.
I noticed about 3-4 years ago it went from a purplish blue syrup like consistency to more of a thicker formula with more blue tint.
Right around the time they changed the bottle design.
I like my women like I like my Bel Ray filter oil
The bell ray oil have been thick as f when I have used it.
I thought bell ray was to thick and twin air was to thin so I usually mix them and it works really good.
Bel Ray was bought out by Calumet around that time. They were actually helping customers out that got the super thick batches. A Vital member was an employee there and was assisting folks. Old thread is probably still around.
Letting the filter dry completely after washing, and after oiling, is the ticket.
BelRay has always been my go to.
I have a bottle that's less viscous than in the past too. Hope it's safe to use.
