Broke wrist....can move all fingers
They put me in a sugar splint on Sunday and first ortho visit Friday.

Can I still ice this thing?

I was absolutely loving riding all over again and keen to get back to it

I understand it's broken...but it doesn't feel terrible

can I be bending flexing icing etc to keep it from atrophy I should I be staying dead still?..

Rest, Ice, Anti inflammatory (ibuprofen, Aleve, or Tylenol) and Elevation.

Keep it immobilized in the splint, until your apt with the orthopedist.

Do you know which bone you fractured? Some, like the scaphoid receive poor blood flow and take longer to heal or a surgical fix.

sounds like a question for an actual medical professional? Didn't they give you any instructions when fitting you with the splint?

Bruh, your wrist is comprised of numerous bones.

Which one of them is broken?

If it’s the scaphoid, do not fuck around. If it’s the ulnar styloid, don’t be a bitch.

The only bone in your wrist you need to worry about is the scaphoid. Doubt it is this but best to double check.

Most broken wrists are no big deal, except when you break both and have to wipe your ass.

I guess what I'm asking/ hoping is there a chance I'm good to go In a month?

Granted not scaphoid

I know it sounds absurd but they literally didn't tell me shit other than it's broken and to see the ortho… Five days will have passed that I've been in this splint and i would really like to know what the fuck is going on

Youth, non smoking, non overweight, are all positive factors that increase speed of healing.   The opposite holds true too.

Typical treatment for a broken wrist is 6-8 week immobilization.  Scaphoid can require an additional 4-6 weeks.

Not true, if it is the lunate bone its even worse...mine are dead in both wrists (kienbock disease) and it is not a joke. Bloodflow is limited and every injury to this area takes a very long time to heal

I rode for a few weeks with a broken scaphoid before getting it checked out. I ended up having to have surgery on mine, but it felt like a lightly sprained wrist. Ended up being one of the worst injuries I've had with regards to riding moto.

Rest - meaning limit movement in the injured area  even if it, according to us hard headed mx’ers,“doesn’t hurt of feels ok”

Ice - 20 mins on (not directly on skin use a damp thin towel as a barrier) when skin gets back to normal temp ice again

Compression - splint or wrap moderately tight

Elevation - at every chance keep it above your heart, when you think it’s above, raise it higher

Stay hydrated and eat clean.

Fractured, broken, which bone(s)? How old are you, are you in good shape, etc.? Depends on A LOT of factors. Your doctor will know best.

I broke my radius and ulna a couple times when I was ~16 years old. Surgery then 6 weeks till I was out of the cast and a couple weeks to get back up to speed.

If it's the scaphoid, then good luck! Depends on a lot of things, but could be 9 months. I broke mine twice. They put a screw in it the second time and it took forever to heal. Doctor was cool and formed my cast around a grip I brought in so I could still ride, though. That went great till I crashed and broke my other wrist...

I broke two bones in my wrist after highsiding a kx500 years ago. 6 months minimum but plan on 8-10 with training/strengthening. you can still work out your legs and torso in the meantime

Keep your splint on until you are seen by ortho. Most fractures take 6 to 8 weeks to heal.  Depending on your fracture and the post-reduction alignment they may just cast you at ortho or may recommend surgery.  Please do not ride in the meantime.  Your wrist is very important and it sucks that you are injured but not letting these heal fully will affect every aspect of your life if there is impaired healing.

Also sorry that American Healthcare is a clownshow where doctors don't even have enough time to explain things to patients anymore.

No you should not ride or at least 6 weeks. Let it heal.

Did they show you the break on an x-ray? If so, which bones are broke and are they displaced?

I've broken both wrists/lower arms in my lifetime. The first just cracked all the way through and i wore a splint for 6 weeks. The second was the end of my right arm and inbetween the time I went to the emergency room and saw the orthopedist a few days later a piece "floated " back into place so i didn't have to have surgery with pins, just a full arm cast or 2 weeks followed by a forearm cast for another 4 or so weeks.

Let us know how it goes.

When you say it cracked all the way through what exactly cracked?… The physicians assistant told me that on Sunday, but didn't exactly specify what was broken all the way through?

I can make a  and stretch my fingers, etc.… Looking forward  tomorrow to find out what the hell is going on after six days

Dude the last 2 lines...

From emergency room to leaving was 4 hours

They gave me a five mil oxy and a Tylenol and the 'physicians assistant' told me it was broken all the way through

That's it

Because you can move things doesn’t mean anything.  If it’s is “cracked all the way through” something is broken and in that context,  the simplest of breaks take at least 6 weeks to heal.

Back in high school I broke my radius, cast past the elbow. 2 weeks later riding wheelies on the bmx again with the cast. Week 3 I cut it just below the elbow. Week 4 I cut it mid forearm. Day before 6 week visit I cut it off. Both mom and Dr. were pissed but saved him some time. lol. X ray showed it was healed and I was free to go. FWIW 15 y/o heals faster than a 30+ year old

I think it was the radius bone. It was 33 years ago when i was 12. I injured it in the late afternoon and tried to sleep it off but it ached pretty bad so mom took me to emergency the next morning

They showed me the x-ray and the faint line that went all the way across the bone and that it was still in-line and not displaced.

So they gave me a leather splint with velcro straps that had an aluminum plate in it to keep my arm straight. I wore it for 6 weeks then i was good to go for the most part.

I'd lock myself in my house until I saw an MRI result. Broken bones in the wrist give your ligaments to much room and can easily tear. I've tore my SL ligaments in both wrists because before the tear there was pain I was trying to ignore.  .....Ive been out of work with a 5 lb. lifting limit for a year, and I definitely won't be able to return to carpentry. Take care of yourself

cracked, broken, fractured, hairline are all still a broken bone. what matters is 1. Is it displaced? Meaning separated, not connected. I imagine if it was bad enough they would have scheduled you for surgery of some sort. 2. What bone is it and is it intra or extra articular? Meaning does it go into the wrist joint. Could be distal radius fracture and/or ulna. Could be your wrist bones like scaphoid mentioned above. Those smaller bones take alot more time to heal. Does not sound like you had a great experience with wherever you went. Do a little research, find a hand surgeon in your area if you need surgery.

dude … just wait to see the orthopedic hand specialist. They will tell you what to do, if it’s scaphoid i’ve done both and both were different except from the fact they are a pain in ass to get to heal. Right one was over a year to heal in 2000 and my left one done in 2023 was just over 6 months. if it is the scaphoid and it’s broken all the way through confirmed with MRI i’m telling you to get the surgery to have the screw inserted… it will not heal right without it.

Well, you went to the bone doctor yesterday. What did they have to say?

Radius..all the way through

Surgery Tuesday morning -plate and screw

They gave me the option not to but I pushed for it..I want to get back to life asap, pretty active and physical job and life.

Sold bike this morning

The bit that stings the most is this was caused by a downed rider behind a blind step up and had nowhere to go.

I know I know, comes with the territory but man I was enjoying life on my bike lately

Fresh start in a couple months ✅
