It's that time of year here in Canada, haven't ridden a bike in 5 months and probably still a month to go. Talking with a friend tonight (both early 30's) and he was just so dang pumped on his rec soccer league. He loves sports and especially soccer, but I found myself really jealous of that. I quit racing MX 10 years ago due to injury risk for work and budget. I ride dual sport/single track but haven't scratched that competitive itch for a long time. Looking into road racing or track days for a start, but that's an expensive jump and the injury risk is still there. I can't believe I'm that jealous of someone playing soccer, when the only thing I've found that gives me that same excitement is riding. Kind of wish I spent more time playing hockey as a kid rather than riding, as I am completely without skill to try any stick/ball sports. Nor do I really want to....
What else have you guys found to replace the thrill of racing, or even riding? Returning to racing/competitive track riding just doesn't seem wise for me at this stage of life, but I've been going through withdrawal for 10 years and it doesn't seem to be getting better.
Have you ever had you dick sucked and you butt hole licked at the same time by 2 different chicks?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've found nothing that matches Motocross, but mountain biking is really, really cool too.
It's especially fun to ride with friends. It's like BMX for adults. I've even gotten to the point where I enjoy climbs.
My favorite time to ride is at night. It takes a little getting used to riding with lights, but it's very, very therapeutic. It's an adventure every single time.
Again, nothing matches Motocross, especially racing, but mountain biking is a lot less expensive, and safer, as the speeds are slower (unless you start hucking huge jumps or drop offs). It's also more convenient, as you usually don't have to travel as far.
Not sure I would use joy as the way to describe it, but part of the reason I love riding is because it's the only thing I've found where I can truly check out. My mind cannot wander to other things and all the other worries are forgotten when I'm riding. That is the thing I've found hardest to replicate with other activities. Anything else that I've tried and my mind can still wander or stress. Shooting is only thing that's come close. Little bit of danger, noise, focus, skill to work on, and I can mostly check out from the rest of the world, but still not to the extent I can with riding.

I have had that pleasure twice in my life. You are correct, it very nearly matches riding Moto , but I will say , in my case it only lasts about the same amount of time as it takes to add 2 psi to your front tire with a compressor.
Karting
Get an emtb, but none of this grinding for fitness crap. Just straight balls to the walls up and down sending it. Stick it in turbo and hit some steeps, rock gardens, sketchy doubles, massive booters. I honestly have become addicted to it and don't even own a dirtbike right now
Non Moto
I do enjoy Karting, but thats a money pit , even the arrive and drive stuff is getting expensive, and TBH its so serious that half the fun is sucked out of it before you even move.
Back in the day i got to drive in a competition that ran the week after the F1 GP here in the UK, where all the F1 ,Sportscar ,WRC, and press teams got to race for 4 hours, i have never seen anything like it, we were just there doing our best as Jaguar B Team, while Ferrari and Mercedes guys almost came to blows in pit lane.
When we had them just for our team, we took 60 people to a huge indoor place in London, and our F3 driver qualified 7th LOL.
Nothing comes close to MX .
No!
I've been wondering the same thing as I'm in my mid-40s and 50 seems to be coming quick. I mountain bike on an emtb regularly, a little bit of kart racing, golf, fast cars, but nothing compares to Motocross unfortunately.
Since my body stopped handling riding and racing, I have really enjoyed rock climbing. It's extremely mental and physical, and when you do it right it's very easy on the body. Fortunately, I have a deep water solo facility nearby, which is life changing.
In the back of your Hi-Ace at the track....Moto now?
Go play hockey, you are in Canada.
No.
Our brains are made for moto and nothing else compares. I’m not a racer but as a casual weekender none of the other motorsport categories come close to motocross in terms of value for money. It really does not need to be expensive.
I’ve also tried all the available stick and ball sports growing up and I have zero memory of the first time I tried those but can vividly remember everything about the very first time I got on a “scrambler” over 40 years ago.
This weekend i will be behind the gate again to kick off my 52nd season.
Local race, zero prep, not ridden since October last year.
Just heading out to spend time with friends, and clear my head totally for a few hours while my helmet is on.
I love doing all the announcing stuff and livestreaming, but nothing beats riding, no matter how much you suck at it.
I still havent decided on which bike yet, but if i pull out the RM465, it will be a combined rider and bike age of 104.
I always had a lot of hobbies and was the kid that grew up wanting to do a little bit of everything, rather than just do 1 or 2 things. Sometimes I regret that and other times I don't. After college, some of those things stopped, like baseball and whatnot. But I always kept MX and hockey as things I liked to do. Then I started to miss BMX, so was in and out of that and then starting MTB. So those are my sports-type activities that I still do, to this day. Maybe MTB is something to do until the tracks get ready, up that way? I feel like I can ride even in the winter, down here. So that might help give you something to do and the skill will transfer over.
A few other things that I like, that still do challenge me, but in a different way: guitar and RC racing, also shooting. Those are great for hand-eye coordination and are fun. MX is always going to be a unique experience, so I don't know that you can get the same feeling from something else. But I have no problem keeping occupied with other things to challenge me. I realize not everyone likes to dabble into different activities though.
Pit Row
Only if the bike was inside.
Nope. I have quit riding moto three times in the 35 years since I started and couldn’t find anything to replace it. Mountain bikes were/are fun but not the same, shooting is fun but not the same, etc. Flying was very close for the ability to “check out” from daily life like truck referred to (one of my favorite parts of moto as well) but ridiculously expensive. I suspect any good motorsport would come close to or equal moto, but cost becomes a factor really quickly, especially on four wheels.
One thing I have done is switch to being more of a “professional practice rider” vs racing anymore. I hit a couple Vet/40+ races a year and the odd local one, but I’m over waiting 30+ motos in each half to get my 8 laps in a day. Love lining up behind a gate, especially in my 40s because we all have to go to work on Monday and tend to ride hard but respectfully, but most local races have gotten ridiculous with the number of classes. I still put pressure on myself to improve, but I no longer force myself to jump something if I’m not feeling it.
The only thing I get burned out on is the travel. I’m 3-4 hrs drive, one way, from the decent tracks. I would love to be able to get up, go ride, come home, and clean my bike in the same day. Instead it becomes an all weekend affair because I’m driving 6-8 hrs round trip to ride, plus ride time. I miss having a track 20 minutes away.
You might find a local track with safe jumps and open practice days, and pick up a leftover new bike (plenty around) to keep the $$$ commitment lower in case you no longer enjoy it, then ease back into it. No one to impress in our 40s/50s/60s except yourself, just enjoy the ride.
I have and it rules. Still not as good as moto on a prepped track when it’s 72 and sunny 😎
Just sold my shifter Kart, loads of fun, dirt bikes win! Went through 2 chassis, had 4 motors, extra sets of wheels, lots of spares. Needed a lift sand, track time is limited, lots of chipmunks and squirrels on the track and the faster guys are mercifulness! However to wake up from a dead sleep being ridden is something to experience😊
Can anything replace it?? Depending o your situation...being able to walk. I gladly walked away from riding. Now...I ride my emtbs. No more surgeries.
Scratch the itch. Buy a newer lightly used 450 and moto for FUN.
Im 40, had a few stints with no riding and i was a much less happier person.
I have buddies that cant come back because they get so pissed they cant do what they used to. Theyll get mad if "so n so" beats them. I could give a crap less who beats me and i have nothing to prove to anyone so what I do, I do it for myself to havr fun. I too have responsibility and dont want to get hurt, so i dont push the limit anymore. I just do what i can do as safe as I can, but I cant not ride. I also do it as motivation to stay healthy. If i don't stay healthy, then my riding budget will be blown on beer, medicine, and antidepressants.
I do only race at places where i genuinely have fun. I won't go to some local shit hole feeling like I "have to". If it starts raining, I load up (unless im at a regional lol). If theres rain in the forecast, im out.
Just imagine being the guy that gets a boner over running around a field kicking a ball. He just hasnt ever had moto or anything cool in his life, which I suppose is fine, but that cant compare. Lol.. Its like my buddies who are in their 30s-40s that still get pumped for the weekend just to get shit faced. Nahhhhh
Just do it.
Rc car racing and sim racing are what you’re looking for
I mean the answer to your question is no. For me though doing cycling races are pretty fun and you exhaust your body to nothing similarly to moto. Started cycling just as a way to stay fit for moto but the racing part is fun. I race on Zwift but thinking im going to get a gravel and do some IRL racing as well.
Its funny when you think of other hobbies that are usually appealing to moto guys they all end up costing similar, its like any hobby eventually gets to a certain point if you get really into it and they all end up expensive.
Bass fishing, RC cars, Mountain biking, Competitive shooting.
I've done all of these with certain levels of getting into it and you can see how all of them can get just as expensive as dirt bikes.
I told the wife, when the times comes and I have to hang up the boots, I'll still be involved with Moto. I'll probably get my EMT license, since a lot of tracks are always needing EMT's on-site. Hell, maybe I'll be a flagger too. As long as I'm involved and helping.
I scrolled to see how long this would take to be posted….but dam… A Canuck who did not even mention hockey? I used To play recreational, grew up playing on ponds….hockey kicks ass! And nothing better than playing inside an arena with boards….
