It appears Jason was being accused of possible infidelity or inappropriate behavior by the victim (wife), which lead ultimately to his overly aggressive actions outside the home, to recover a laptop. This is significant. Taking this outside almost guaranteed neighbors would become witnesses. Yet, he still did it.
We understand that the victim chose not to pursue her original complaint. Very common in those types of situations.
HEP may have either found out in-directly or Jason offered this information.
HEP has to do something in response to this, or is doing something. Like any employer, you have to demonstrate a strong stance on domestic violence. If anything can be learned from the me too movement, taking no stand may cause sponsors to distance themselves from being affiliated, or perceived as turning a blind eye also.

Maybe HEP is requiring counseling related to his behavior before allowing him to come back to the team.

What constitutes a felony vs misdemeanor, nature of the marks/injuries left on the skin.
There may not have been visible red bruising, or finger impressions/redness around her throat. Her statements along with witnesses would be enough to establish the crime, but absence of visible injury means misdemeanor.
