One of the best all around riders to ever grace this planet!
Damn, another one gone!
RIP man!
Steve's AMA Hall of Fame Bio
Agreed, but I bet he would say his riding wasn’t his most important attribute.
Godspeed to a great man.

RIP and condolences to his family.
Oh, man... Another gone too soon. What a career he had. He could ride anything.
R.I.P., Sir.
Such a bummer…
RIP moto bud!!!
Oh my goodness! First I've heard of this! I've been a huge fan of Steve's for years, being born/raised in Texas and was loosely associated with him in his ministry the last several years. He was a tremendous talent & a great man of God as well. My condolences to his wife Tina & their family for this sudden loss.
A better man than rider... and that's saying a lot.
Godspeed and God Bless. 😢
One of, if not the, most dynamic motorcycle racers ever. A very good human and strong man of faith.
He was always there for his friends. I'll miss catching up with him at Supercross every year.
Although he would be jusf as happy to be remembered for his sermons, I'll stick with his motorcycle racing on this forum.
Multi-talented and mega-smiling bad ass.
Farewell to a great one.
He was a great racer, Factory Honda MX, was one of the original guys of Superbikers ( i am a Supermoto guy ) and his transition to road racing through Flat Track and Super TT , was legendary . He was one of the last true all rounders , nobody since has come close.
I remember reading an article in Dirt Bike about his Super TT debut on a CR500 giving the AMA fits because he was going miles in the air over the jumps, and they didnt know what to do.
Sadly never got to see him race, as i am in the UK, but his impact on the sport should never be forgotten.
My sincere condolences to family and friends 💐
I took a 1-day moto school of his at a track named Tornado Alley in Blossom, Texas in 1988. RIP
He will be missed. He was an awesome rider and an awesome human being.
I went to a couple of his motocross schools in the Houston area in the early 90's and used to watch his training videos regularly as well. He was a good guy and a great teacher. Godspeed.
His interview / Bio on Whiskey Throttle was one of the best...Dad owned a dealership , Texas was an open canvas to tear up right out of your front door..
Pit Row
For the young members who were not around when Steve was racing, there is a great interview on Whiskey Throttle. He was one of the most talented all around motorcyclist in history. A very kind and humble human…. So sorry to hear of his passing
He and Brad Lackey were fixtures at Diamond Don's AHRMA nationals. Just hung out with us like any neighbor would.
Legend, RIP Steve.
MXA Article. Who was the best all-around motorcycle racer of all time?
RIP Moto Hero and man of Christ.
His two victories at the Carlsbad superbikers race in 1980 and 81 prove he was the best all around rider at that time . If it weren’t for Magoo , he would have won 82 as well. Such a talent, and good person.
His battle with Magoo at the ‘82 Superbikers was RJ/Bailey at Anaheim ‘86 level awesome.
Ride In Peace, Steve.
Born: June 2, 1957
Died: January 15, 2026 (at age 68)
Career Highlights: First privateer to win an AMA 125 National (1976), AMA Supercross (1979), and AMA 250 National (1980).
✌️
Always enjoyed his morning services at the Pro challenge back in the day. He will definitely be missed. RIP Steve.
Loved getting to talk to him at Freestone and at Rio. The only thing that surpassed his immense talent on a motorcycle was his faith.
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
Another Moto Legend gone. Rest in Peace Sir.
