I've oftened wondered what people have against Davey Coombs. ๐
His parents were pioneers of promoting motocross tracks and still are.
His family has kept the tradition going with the awesome Racer X magazine, which I've been a subscriber since day one. I'm old school and there's something about holding a print issue in your hand versus looking through a phone that is not the same to me.
I always like to re-subscribe around the holidays as they offer some cool packages. This year, I was presently surprised to find this COOL Sticker pack from famous tracks around the country and a Calendar. ๐
I ran into him at a convenience store one time after the Unadilla national and chatted with him and he treated me like a long time friend, even though it was the first time meeting him--great guy!
I know Davey use to post on here, but with the keyboard warriors attacking him for no reason at all and with kooksy the nut job leading the Lynch Mob he no longer bothers and I can't say I blame him.
Just wanted to say thanks to Davey, his family and his sidekick in the office Melanie, she's awesome as well. ๐
Hope you guys have a Happy New Year!
Thanks from AZ
Gary C

Agree, Whenever I've seen Davey, he's always been super friendly and outgoing. Back in the early 2000's when RacerX was doing the "gas card" , I ended up getting the opportunity do get the gas card for the Indy round and our interaction with Davey then was awesome.
Seems that the spat between him and TFS that brought out TFS's "octopus" theory was something that made folks think twice about what was happening with the sport in relation to the Coombs family being heavily involved.
The next piece that came into play was the positive press that would be put out about new media outlets that would begin airing/streaming the nationals and that with each new media outlet announcement came new hopes for better coverage. Just the opposite was the case until Peacock came into the picture and I'm sure the Coombs family played a big role in bringing Peacock into the sport. I can't remember, was it the MAV broadcasts that were a streaming fail or another less known media outlet? Anyhoo, no doubt it was folks on vital airing valid beefs about the streaming service that prompted Davey to come here to help folks understand what was happening...unfortunately that conversation did not go well and that was the last time we heard from Davey on Vital...no doubt a huge loss and I miss seeing him post here.
follow up edit...seems the rift between MXSports and Glen Helen was also something that put a burr under some folks saddle. I don't know enough about that dispute to say anything one way or another.
I think there will always be contention between the folks who use motocross as their hobby/leisure time vs. the folks who make a living from the sport.
The average folks who participate see/assume the cash MxSports rakes in on amateur and pro motocross and put them in the "greedy" category. I understand that thought, a race weekend at an MxSports event is shockingly expensive. And Pro Motocross tickets certainly aren't cheap these days.
I personally don't think the Coombs family is accumulating Yacht-like wealth, although I'm sure they make a good living. I think the average participant underestimates the overhead and risk associated with putting on these races.
Again, I regularly see a disconnection from the people who look at motocross as a hobby and those who look at it like a business. And I think both sides have a valid argument.
Davey genuinely seems like one of the biggest fans of the sport, I don't think it's an act. I just think there's a lot of mouths to feed.
Can't forget about the drug ring, too!
His parents house was up the street from our Jr. High. Didnโt know the Coombs but friends and I would play basketball in their driveway. No questions and on more than one occasion someone inside the house would turn on the flood light so we could continue to play after dark. Try that nowadays. Great family.
Davey is good people and he cares about the sports authenticity. He took time to call me before his daughters Volleyball game and we spoke about track safety and ways to improve the sport for about an hour. I have not seen evidence of a Drug Ring going through MX Sports or RacerX to this day.

His dad was a great moto guy and deserves nothing but respect. Davey deserves both all the respect he gets and all of the flak he gets.
Great moto people, but I would rather do a busines deal with Hillary Clinton then davey and carrie. Both are crooks and took absolute advantage of the situation they were in for personal profit. In any other major sport or top professiona level racing organization they would have been sued out of bussines for what they did.
Thats not even touching on the amateur side of things. Daveys always been nice to me in all conversations ive had with him over the years. On a personal and moto bro level good dude. But just like some people I deal with in my industry, great to have a beer with but to do business with my attorneys will be going over everything with a fine tooth comb on the coombs.
And to thinkโฆ
I was gonna do my usual,โWait for itโฆ.โ
But, I knew I didnโt have to.
๐คฃ
All based on hear-say and gossip. No worries. Itโs jusโ another day on The Web.
Look at the type of person who has issues with DC and it should tell you everything you need to know.
The sport is at the highest competitive level ever. Its the most organized ever with the best live streaming ever and to some degree Davey and friends have something to do with that. And if he is trying to make a lot of money doing it, well...isn't that what we all try to do at our jobs?
Now, that being said, I don't get the allure of racing Loretta Lynns. It seems at this point to be the biggest, most over hyped mx event of the year, really ever.
Also, I have no desire, nor will I attend the Washougal National. That big banner stand that was at the beginning of the whoops pissed me off in the early 90's and now all the roped off corporate areas further dim my desire to attend the national. Tickets are too expensive for what I get.
Also, SX has priced me out of attending a race.
So SX/MX gets my Peacock money so I can watch the race and that's about it. I even canceled my Racerx sub last year as I find myself never reading really anything. I'm a podcast guy now.
Racer X โฆโฆ. Some great guitar playing!
I see the whole conflict of interest thing with his mag and being a promoter but at the end of the day, if you aren't capitalizing and making every dollar you can as a promoter you should probably do something different. Davey is a stand up guy and got me my first "in " opportunity as part of a school project back in 2005 which I will forever be grateful for.
I'm also probably one of the few people on here that deals directly with a lot of the promotors in our sport as well as other sports. I'm pretty critical about a lot of the business dealings in our sport, especially with agents and representation but my experiences with MxSports specifically have been all very good. Tim Cotter has always been super fair and easy to deal with on the business side of things across the multiple series and events I have personally been involved with which is a reflection of the leadership at MxSports.
I have always had nothing but respect for Davey. He always gives me the time of day when I see him. I have also never understood the hate for him, but also with success always comes hate. And like someone said above. look at the type of people who are hating on him.
Most people will tell you that there is Davey the Businessman and Davey the fan of the sport and motocrosser, there in lies the difference in peopleโs experience with him. Iโve had nothing but great interactions with him.
Those at the top will always get hate...some justified, some not, but a lot of it is rooted in hearsay, ignorance and/or jealousy...The Coombs are at the top of the sport, so...that's why they are hated. They should take it as a compliment.
You have to think why do Coombs have the biggest and best events in the country. Loretta's, GNCC, MX Nationals, SMX, so why.. Its because the entire family has worked for 50 years building the events. They treat sponsors good and have the best sponsors in the sport. They treat riders and families as family. Yes they charge enough to make the events successful just like any business but they deliver the best events anywhere. Anyone who does not understand why Loretta's is so special most likely has not been there as there is nothing like it. If you want a quality event it costs a little more. If its all about money you can go to local events and save money, but no one else has created top quality events like MX Sports and helped grow the sports in all directions.
Logged in just to say that Racer X is the capstone of the sport. If you donโt know, look it up.
Fight me.
the sister not so much..
I overheard the receptionist where I used to get my teeth cleaned say she used to ride the elevator with a dude whose mom's ex boyfriend personally saw Davey Coombs stay in the left lane when he wasn't passing anyone. I have no use for those type of shenanigans. Totally unacceptable behavior.
Was*
Pit Row
Davey was absolutely shit on by the members here when the tv package for the Nationals went to shit a few years with MAVTV, and really hasn't posted since then (2022), which is a shame because Davey is great, and has been great for the sport and is a genuinely nice person who will give the time of his day to answer questions and talk moto.
He owes me ๐ฐ
I met DC.
I was in Lorettaโs jail.
He is pure moto. We bullshit for a minute but mostly I eavesdropped on his radio, watched him type some Racer X stuff, and listened to a couple phone calls (sue me)
The dude loves motocross.
The money keeps it alive.
He needs to help with local, grassroots MX.
he may see that as a threat but grassroots helps from the bottom up.
We need guys on 15 year old bikes riding or XR100s. Then a year later theyโre buying a new KX450
Moto Tees. Thatโs my biggest gripe with the dude.
Ayers gets to use the riders likeness yet Davey wonโt allow them to sell their own shit.
Crude business man. Like all of them.
Ask Guy Cooper.
Davey is a good guy in my book. Tim cotter on the other hand. Not sure what sort of dirt he has on mx sports they donโt can his assโฆ he doesnโt know if heโs coming or going sometimes. Tbh he did stop me to talk about my dog in Vegas and if I could judge him off that interaction only Iโd think heโs a saint. Meanwhile we had a different convo in June. And before then. And before then. Hey maybe heโs getting better in old age. Who knows. I just know I wonโt go to high point iron man and whatever other nationals heโs at.
We were back in Indiana for Christmas and I heard DC bought Ironman Raceway. Not sure if it's true or not.
Never met DC but seems like a good guy.
Though Iโve had a few conversations with him, my first and favorite was at Southwick when I was sitting on the gate for the LCQ. He walked across the start straight to come up to me, shake my hand and say โhey youโre that guy I read on Vitalโ.
Both the riders next to me were like who are you??
Just a dude with internet and a keyboard.
Perfectly said.
G, I think DC is just over feeling like he had to constantly defend himself or explain why it is . . .
my best guess is because he was so accessible to the average keyboard warrior, he took lots of rocks and arrows because there was nobody else to bitch to
Coombs is human. Iโm sure that he has his flaws just like the rest of us humans.
But when it comes to the sport of MX, heโs probably been one of the most positive influencers in the history of the sport, at least in the USA portion of the sport. Sure, the sport would probably still be around if Coombs wasnโt โin chargeโ the past couple decades or so, but in my opinion weโd likely have very few National MX events left and the importance of the series would be a fraction of what it is today.
