Weird, not a catastrophic failure, but just like a stuck kill switch…
Reminds me of Chad Reeds WSX crash when the fuel pump failed on his ktm. I remember hearing stories of others having the same problem around that time.
Dude was hucking one. My money is on the tip over sensor shutting the bike off. Bet nothing actually went wrong.
Check to WOW (Weight On Wheels) switch.
Damn
Thinking I’d go carb’d 2T on the ramp.
Damn.
Why did he jump off?
Killed The Mac!
I would bet a fair amount of money that it is fuel related.
I had the same thing happened to me at Fox Raceway several months ago on a brand new KTM with VP T-4 in the tank. Bike died in the air.
I replaced the fuel and the fuel filter, and it never happened again, bike has 25 hours on it now with not a hiccup
On my 24 ktm 300 I was wide open down a straight (thankfully) and it instantly died on me, turned out to be a bad kill switch. No warning at all, pretty scary.
This was fairly common on 2017 CRF450s. A water drop would get in there and short the system unexpectedly. Had it happen to me before a drop away jump. Fortunately, I had enough room to slow down before leaving the jump. The Geico Honda guys told me they covered their kill buttons with a plastic bag before washing their bikes that year.
Electrical parts do strange stuff sometimes.
While I was making lunch one day, door to the garage open, I hear my KTM starting. Like someone is just holding the starter button on. I run to the garage, and there’s nothing touching the bike, but it’s trying to idle with the starter engaged! I reached behind the front number plate and yanked the starter button plug loose, but it keeps going! Finally saw a sparking inside another plug so I yank that one loose and the thing finally shuts down.
One of the terminations in the second plug had a tab out of place, but how it worked perfectly for a couple years and then one day suddenly failed is a mystery..
Dealer did the $499 prep & setup instead of the $799 prep & setup. That's what you get when you try to negotiate!
Allegedly KTM fixed that issue. Also, if the bike shuts off when it shouldn’t then something is wrong and if it shuts off by design it’s a design flaw, even tho only a few people in the world can whip like that. Someone asked about it for this crash and they said it wasn’t the issue. Also confirmed the bike didn’t run out of gas.
Where is this tip over sensor that you speak of located?

Man I loveeee these ktm threads!!!
And now... they getting even worse... lol..
Not sure on newer gens. On my 16 250sxf it was under the seat. I think the new ones are behind the front plate. Could be wrong though. Not sure if my 24 ec300 has one or not.
Not sure I'd like that on a dirt bike.
Those have been on modern EFI dirt bikes since EFI came out. Those take a few seconds to shut the bike down. It's what kills your bike when laying on the ground. Start an EFI machine, lay it down, count about 3 seconds. That tip over sensor can keep it from starting as well.
The bike has been sent back to KTM headquarters to be assessed what is wrong with it, they are taking it pretty serious to find out the issue, poor Jake got a nice list of injuries out of it aswell.
