I don't think anyone ever really plans to stop. Someday you'll have your last ride and if you're lucky enough to avoid a career-ender you probably won't even realize it at the time. So make them all count.

Oh, that's true, and a scary thought. Someday, you'll ride your last ride. Just thinking about it makes me sad. I guess that means I'll never quit!

I turn 67 next month, just filed for social security and sent out letters that I'm retiring at the end of the year, and my son will be taking over the business starting Jan 1st. I plan to start riding more, but I've had to accept the fact that I'm done racing motocross for various reasons, pain and risk vs reward being at the top of the list. I plan on doing more dual sporting and desert / trail riding, and traveling around the country in our camper exploring little towns and areas on motorcycles. (I have an EXCF 500 and wife has an XT250) Lately I've gotten more into E-mountain biking, I go all the time and can't get enough, did 12 miles today actually. There are boatloads of single track trails close to me so it's cheap an easy. I've been starting to do more challenging black diamond and double black diamond trails, it gets the adrenaline pumping with a lot less risk and pain than mx. Not to mention no driving 3-4 hours round trip to race 2 15 minute motos, no gate fees entry fees bike maintenance yada yada yada. It's quick and easy. Today I didn't leave the house until after 3pm, got 12 miles of single track and was home by 5. Pretty hard to beat that. You get a lot of "Yuck for your buck" lol.

Although I shouldn't say "Never race again"  I rode Ocotillo Wells with my son last Sun-Wednesday (we work around the big weekends now) He lives right down the street from Pala and informed me wants to join the otmx and start racing and taking his son to the track when he's old enough. (He's 2 now)  Who knows maybe I'll be headlight guy rolling around in the 70 class if that happens. So to answer the question how long do I intend to ride ? For as long as I can !

I'm 52 and have been riding since I was 7. Took it seriously in my mid 20's and got a lot faster and did better racing than I ever thought I would, so I have no regrets. I have always had a bike in my garage and for some stupid reason I just can't stop wanting to ride so I keep doing it. I hit up my local track for practice about once a month, but the excitement to ride my dirtbike keeps me motivated and in shape so it stays fun. In my 40's I went through a period of fearing death, so I sold my modern bike and built a 125-project bike and that was really fun. Now I just try to be positive and enjoy every lap and not fear crashing and I try keep it at about 75%. I feel like having a brand-new bike that you know is "most likely" not going to break keeps my confidence level up and the risk vs reward is not as bad. I'm trying to keep myself in shape so when I do ride my gear fits and I don't get too tired. It also helps if you are lucky enough to have a buddy you can pace yourself with and keep each other motivated and positive.

Might as well right ?, WTF else are we gonna do 😄. It's not like anyone in this thread is going to stop because "It's the sensible thing to do" If we had any sense we wouldn't be riding the stupid things in the first place 😂🤣😂😂

Growing up, I always thought I'd "outgrow" motocross. I even quit for a while when I went to college, and then started racing again in my mid-20s. I got faster than ever, started doing well in the Vet classes when I turned 30, and just kept the ball rolling.

Now I'm in my mid 50s (55 in 3 months,) and I'm still riding. I'm not as fast as I once was, but part of that is from fear of letting it hang out. A week ago it took me half the day before I started jumping a medium-large double jump, and then I had to get towed off it. I'm still pretty quick when I'm not thinking about it, but the fear is there and the fitness is lacking, comparatively. Someday, I'll be too weak to really ride like this, and then I wonder if I'll enjoy it as much. If I can't push, will it be the same?

Anyway, I made a conscious decision a few months ago that I'm going to continue eating right, working out, and riding as fast as I can, whatever speed that may be. I want to be a fast, competitive person at least until I'm 60. At that point, I will have ridden for 50 years and I think I can relax a little and just ride to enjoy the breeze and the smells. Haha. I don't think I'm ever going to stop.

63 here and have no intention on stopping.

I'm going to be 70 in a couple of months. I hit the Saturday at Glen Helen races on a regular basis. I try to ride moto twice a week. I do a hard 25 mile mountain bike ride once a week and one or two 30+ mile road bike ride a week.

I might start to think about quitting when I get old.

Until this year, I have not missed a year racing since August of 1973. My back has given me issues this year that has weakened my legs to where I don't feel safe mixing it up with other riders. I'm getting an epidural injection on the 15th (2nd one) and I hope it helps. I've been cycling a lot (Peloton and mountain bike) along with PT and that is also helping. I have ridden some this year, but not able to push like I want to. I'm 67 and will continue as long as I can get my leg over my bike and ride. I have both modern and vintage race bikes and may gravitate more to the vintage racing, but nothing will ever replace the thrill of that gate dropping!

That's badass!

Hope you get your back straightened out.

At least 15 minutes.

Didn't realize there were so many Masters class guys on here.

My carcass crests 61 in about a month.  I got tuned into our regional AHRMA cross-country several years back, and it's been a great way to stay involved.  Relatively low key, and there's a good mix of both XC and MX races in our series. Lots of great people involved in that type of racing too- have made some real friends at those events. Right now I only get to ride a few times a year outside of race weekends, but 5 months from now I'm handing in my employee ID and I plan to get some more saddle time after that.  May even reward myself with a modern bike and a trip out west to ride with some friends next summer.

So I'll add my name to the list of folks who answer OP's question with "As long as I can."

64 and intend to keep riding until I die or become physically unable to. No racing for me, I haven't raced since the 1980's. I like to cow trail and like a lot of the other old timers have said, just keep it safe and sane. I do like to open it up a little now and then, but safely. I also have a relative - my cousin's husband who has been a street rider his entire adult life, just turned 81 and still rides his Harley "as much as he can" as he puts it. The guy is old, but is a judo instructor and in great shape mentally and physically for his age.

Life's too short to just sit on a couch! At 43 I plan to ride as long as I can throw my leg over the seat

Hopefully I’ll slide into my grave, 6th gear tapped 🤪🤓

I'm 44 and ride better now than when I was in my 20's, BUT I have God awful painful jumper knees that I can't get rid of or figure out. I feel like this is the beginning of the end. 😟

41, I saw there was a +80 class at world vets. Reading all these replies of men in there 50/6070s is highly motivating that ill be there soon. Riding till the wheels fall off. Great thread.

If you had asked me 6-7 yrs ago, I've had said for as long as I can get my leg over a bike. I was fit, and riding faster than I'd ever been.

I'm now 44, I've got 3 kids (Two girls, 5 & 3 and a 1yr old boy), I managed to ride once this year, twice last year and I have this horrible, niggling feeling that this year was possibly my last ride...

My girls absolutely love the races and both say they want to ride. (My eldest put "Motorbike" at the top of her Christmas list!!) But between my work and their current hobbies, (Dance classes, gymnastics and kids/touch rugby) I feels like it will never happen. I barely get time to wash and eat, let alone time to prep and look after bikes for them.... That's if I could even afford to buy 'em a bike each! Cause there is no way they are sharing!

I'm still building bikes, and making parts etc, but the passion/hobby that created my company/job has been squeezed out, and now I don't get the time for my passion and hobby.

"I wonder if I'll enjoy it as much. If I can't push, will it be the same? "

It has nothing to do with going fast.   Nothing to do with jumping or fitness or even if you can get on a bike at all.   If you are anything like me,  just being at the track hearing the bikes and smelling the dirt and fumes is medicine.

I have never found a video that illustrated the love of bikes like this one does.   No matter how old or broke down,  if you have that thing that some of us have, it never, ever goes away.   Look at that fellas face.  I get it.

And if you're like me,  this hits hard.

Im getting ready to hang up the boots for a couple years here. Wife is pregnant and I would hate to get hurt before I can play with my kid. I will back to it once they are 3 or 4.

About to turn 46 and in the best shape I’ve been in since being 23. Most of my riding buddies are in their 60’s. I took the classic route of quitting when I started driving and chasing poon, returned in my late 30’s. Just about to the point where my kid can hold his own in the woods. At some point I think the racing may dial back and I’d like to travel and hit the destination riding spots before I lose the kid to college.

If I can someday ride with a grandchild, that would be pretty dang cool

Nearly 49 now and riding better than I have since my 30’s. Dad’s still going at 74, so I need to make it at least that far, lol.

I plan to ride until I’m either unable or it’s no longer enjoyable. I ride street too, but it’s not the same.

Some really good replies and motivation in this thread. Glad to see there are a lot of old guys like me who still get the thrill of riding.

I'm 67 and have been riding for more then 57 of those years. Have a couple dirt bikes and a street bike.

I currently had the longest time off a motorcycle about fifteen months or so, as my wife lost her battle with cancer a year ago and I've been in a real depressive, no motivation funk.

Last week was the first time I went for my ride with my buddies and it was a really good time.

https://www.vitalmx.com/forums/non-moto/happy-thanksgiving-0

I raced moto into my mid-fifties and during one race it kind of hit me like a ton of bricks as the risk vs reward no longer seemed worth it. So now I just trail ride with my buddies although sometimes it seems like it turns into a race! 😂

10000124021000012289 0

So back to the question at hand I will ride for as long as I can as it keeps me sane in this crazy world we live in.

58 and never want riding to end…but after some crashes and injuries in the last few years I know this will not last forever….I was local A rider since 23 years old, raced a bunch and still occasionally race but at this point I”m just happy hitting up practice tracks a few times a week. My body is beat up from all these years of MX…I have never worked harder to maintain my fitness and come back from various injuries than I have in the last 5 years…It sucks accepting the fact that we are slowing down and fear of getting injured is sometimes very real…I try to pick & choose the safest tracks to ride so I”m not tempted to do anything beyond my senior abilities but we all know how that sometimes goes….long story short…. I intend to ride until I physically cannot ride but sometimes that decision is made for you with 1 mistake….

Sir, your profile picture is so cool.
