Growing up, I always thought I'd "outgrow" motocross. I even quit for a while when I went to college, and then started racing again in my mid-20s. I got faster than ever, started doing well in the Vet classes when I turned 30, and just kept the ball rolling.
Now I'm in my mid 50s (55 in 3 months,) and I'm still riding. I'm not as fast as I once was, but part of that is from fear of letting it hang out. A week ago it took me half the day before I started jumping a medium-large double jump, and then I had to get towed off it. I'm still pretty quick when I'm not thinking about it, but the fear is there and the fitness is lacking, comparatively. Someday, I'll be too weak to really ride like this, and then I wonder if I'll enjoy it as much. If I can't push, will it be the same?
Anyway, I made a conscious decision a few months ago that I'm going to continue eating right, working out, and riding as fast as I can, whatever speed that may be. I want to be a fast, competitive person at least until I'm 60. At that point, I will have ridden for 50 years and I think I can relax a little and just ride to enjoy the breeze and the smells. Haha. I don't think I'm ever going to stop.
58 and never want riding to end…but after some crashes and injuries in the last few years I know this will not last forever….I was local A rider since 23 years old, raced a bunch and still occasionally race but at this point I”m just happy hitting up practice tracks a few times a week. My body is beat up from all these years of MX…I have never worked harder to maintain my fitness and come back from various injuries than I have in the last 5 years…It sucks accepting the fact that we are slowing down and fear of getting injured is sometimes very real…I try to pick & choose the safest tracks to ride so I”m not tempted to do anything beyond my senior abilities but we all know how that sometimes goes….long story short…. I intend to ride until I physically cannot ride but sometimes that decision is made for you with 1 mistake….
When I was kid I wanted to ride until I was in my 80's, but unfortunately injuries have ruled that out and 45 was it for me.
You have the perfect attitude! Keep at it forever, because you never know when forever is! In my 50s I’d still hang it out easy too far to win, in my 60s I just don’t care as much, so hanging it out usually refers to my tongue slapping the crossbar after a few laps!
66 in 8 days still ride & will ride as long as it's fun & i can get my leg over the seat

I turned 52 in October. Been riding since I was 13. The last 12-15 years all I have done is ridden, havent raced at all except for a couple team Hare Scrambles with my older boy.
This year my older boy talked me into racing a local Hare Scamble and I had a blast. Then later in the summer my younger boy talked me into racing a local MX. That really fire me up and I am looking forward to more racing and riding next season.
So to answer your question........I plan to ride and race as long as I am able.
Until they peel my cold dead fingers from the handlebars.
59 in a few days. I hope to stop just before I'm injured again, but not until then 😏
Rode moto till 60 and then injuries started to catch up with me. After 2 concussions in 4 months I called it done. Still ride street tho and sure miss the moto rush, but risk/reward became too skewed. I’d planned to ride till 70 but plans didn’t work out.
Weekend after my 100 birthday then I’ll take up something that’s safer like Rock climbing or Base jumping.
I turn 61 in January. Still riding...raced one race in the local vet series this past May and had a blast, but the risk vs reward for racing is too high for me. I'm going to ride until I physically cannot get on the motorcycle. Been at it since 8 yrs old.
As long as I can slam a sand berm and feel like I’m on rails, I’ll ride. I’m 38, it’s good motivation to work out and eat well and take care of myself.
59, not much moto but lots of cross country and enduro racing.
I have an enduro this week in east Texas in fact.
A big incentive to keep myself in shape and i think it also exercises my brain.
I'm 53. No plan to stop.
My dad is 80 and still rides. He does hundreds of miles per month on the street, and once a year or so he'll putt around on the dirt.
I turn 67 in January, been riding off and on since about age 10, mostly trail riding but also rode and competed in trials for several years..
In addition, MTB trail riding 30+ years and bike trials competition for about 10.
Some years I didn't ride much as I got older but last several have made the effort to get more seat time.
I've never been fast but have had enough fun to scare myself and limited injuries, so I'm thankful for my "riding career"
Often busy maintaining trails on our property (about 5 miles) when not riding (trail work can be very physical) and also cut firewood regularly.
Never been good at working out but my overall activity level has helped me stay "fit"
Have been thinking about my "last ride" over the last year but my wife keeps telling me never to stop.
Bought a Yamaha E-bike this year and it's the most fun I've had riding anything, so even when the moto goes I see myself on an e-bike for as long as I can.
59 in a couple of months
No plan to stop. Slower than ever but my kid skills are good enough now so he can be on same track as Dad.
Chasing him is just an awesome feeling.
I'm not riding as often as I used to before starting a family but from the moment I prep/load the bikes, it's 100% good times.
Work/life stress is out of the window
I'll be 64 in a few months. I ride for the fun of it - no big jumps, usually ride at my own pace in the woods or the moto track when its not really crowded. My knees and back get sore but still work OK. This past year I've had a couple of close calls which have made me think about the consequences of a bad injury........I love to ride though and don't think I'll ever quit. It just make me really happy.... I actually worry more about my son getting hurt than me.
I ride mountain bikes as much as possible too, but there's just not enough time to do everything I wanna do!
With snow on the ground now I'll be 70 by the next time I ride. During season we do two or three fifteen to twenty minute motos once or twice a week. Still have a blast doing it but now it's on a more natural terrain mid 70's style track with no real jumps, just humps for erosion control. In my opinion staying off the jumps is the key to a long riding career, my knees agree.
Same, I've been hurt plenty, but I have bigger crashes and way more injuries from MTB.
Pit Row
I sold my last bike this year at age 67. Last rode motocross at 66. I told myself that I was in good enough shape to ride but not in good enough shape to crash. I never got back into pre-COVID shape. Funny, because I’ve spent the last couple months getting into double-black diamond ski shape.
62, get to ride with my son, i ride for fun, try to find flow and enjoy the track more than being fast. Figured out id rather ride often than being fadt and recovering. Yeah its when not if, but try to find that balance.
I’m 69, 70 come march. I roll some of the big jumps but not all, it’s still fun. I’m in better shape than in my 50’s, maybe, than my 40’s.
I’ll ride till I can’t !
I have 2 friends in their 80s still riding and racing. So I intend to as well.
I rode in Moab with a 76 year old and he did pretty well! Looks to me like riding keeps you young, people who ride into their 80's are in much better shape than non riders.
This is inspiring to hear all people riding well into their later years!
I've been "retired" for 10 years but a buddy recently got me on a bike on his turn track and a few weeks later I had a bike in my garage.
I'm 37 but keep in good shape and still feel great. I'm looking forward to having fun ripping turns (planning to stay away from jumps) and just getting a little taste of the moto life again!
I'm 55 now, plan to ride well into my 80s Lord willing. not sure if I'll race past my 60s, but will keep riding as long as possible. I workout a ton and am in pretty good shape. No plans to do anything different.
100% agree. I'll be 69 in a couple months. I have a 25 KX 250x, and I just bought a new HD Street Glide. I plan on riding until I can't.
I’m 56 and just getting back in to it, after a ten year hiatus. Risk of injury outweighs my hatred for being sedentary.
What are we supposed to do, sit on the couch drinking beer, waiting for death?
I think if I could still jump a 100 ft table at 100 years old I would die happy
65 and still enjoy riding with my buddies at some local tracks on practice days. Not racing so much anymore since the chance of injury is too high here in the expert classes for a flimsy $5 piece of plastic. It's been basically 40 years of continuous racing with another 10 mixed in of play riding for me and this body is worn out. I plan on riding with some random racing till I'm 72, which is my race number. After that who knows? Plus I put down a lot of miles yearly on my less abusive street scooter as well. I hope to have some type of two wheel machine under for as long as possible.
