So much Great Stoke and Information shared in here! That’s as good as it gets here…at Vital, in my opinion.

I see different concerns and approaches to how to deal with our knees and injuries. NICE!

I had 3 different Ortho’s that didn’t prescribe knee braces for anything beyond rehab and therapy. Seems that my knee stability and strength were really good; but, due to the DNA handed down to me over the years…I’m as bow-legged as a ol’school rodeo champion. 🤣

And that combined with knee injuries going back to the ‘80s had taken it’s toll. Someone spoke of having NO anterior meniscus? Well, “ditto”! And the left was full David Groggins…and over on the right is sub-David Groggins (but it’s gonna get done…SOON!).

Someone posted about having an ACL removed during the process…? Yup. My allograft from 2013 went in the trash! 🤣 Btw, that “used” ACL bought me A LOT of time and gave me my knee back…for a while. My doc was surprised it was still there…then told me, “So, it’s gone & your procedure was text-book. Let’s hit the rehab and get to the other one!” It’s nice to have a doc that’s stoked and involved in his patients. Oh, and he dogs moto, Baja…works on raven era…even those TT driving madmen!

The well wishes and “go for it” mentality shared in here is simply who we are.

Continue to share your stoke…our stoke…and I’m gonna see some of you out there at the practice track, at the races and around the moto-sphere as I go thru this process. Be sure to say,”Hey!” if and when yiu see my old gimpy moto-ass at the track.

In the meantime…take a lap for me!

Day 2 status: the “nerve-block” is or has worn off…wearing off…still sticking to just Tylenol for now. I’ve got 5mg Oxy on reserve…trying to…hopefully minimize its use/need…ask DeanO, we’ve had some laughs about it, yet, it ain’t all that funny…that stuff STOPS you from being able to…well…take a shit! And that ain’t cool.

I’m walking on it, doing foot raises, calf-stretches, keeping it straight while seated and resting, flexing it a bit…in short…I’m gonna fight…cautiously…for my mobility. Until the block wore off, I had “mild drop foot”. Ask Josh Hill about that. It sucks and makes walking a challenge. But, with the block gone, foot control & some of my post-ankle reconstruction stiffness and stiff-pain-until stretched is back…that’s a GOOD THING! Oh, I had a complicated and thorough Ankle Rebuild in April that kicked off this entire process. After the 2024 Baja 1000 where my team won the ProMoto-60 Championship…my ankle and knee (both Left) were DONE!

Well, anyhooo…that’s where I’m at.

Go have an awesome day.

Manny

Manny, just a suggestion, like you i wanted to avoid oxy, it def had an impact on my rehab, as the pain was pretty intense. If i had a do over i would pop an oxy an hour or 2 before PT so i could push myself a bit more.  The extending the knee was easier, my hang up is be bending it, i get 105ish by myself with weight or assistance i can get 118.  This all affects if i can get fwd on the seat and keep my foot on the peg. 2 years out and im still improving a bit in that regard. The corner coach bump has helped make sure i dont get lazySmile

Good luck on you rehab!!!

I recently had a revision surgery to a TKR that was a few years old, Manny.  The narcs are hell on a digestive system.  When I could finally go #2 it was like pushing a baseball thru a coffee straw, hurting more than the knee.  I switched to Tylenol and Ibuprofen on that day.

Be patient and follow the PT program.  Rage, rage against the dying of the light!

Note: There are some FUGLY postures/images in here of knees…mostly post-surgery…that some may not want to see….

Over the last 45 years, I’ve broken A LOT of stuff…A LOT of “me”…too many bones, tendons, ligaments and important soft tissues…and it started to take a toll on me ESPECIALLY on my knees and my mobility.

It all came down to this: I got a knee replacement today. And it is all because of Moto. Therefore, I’m thinking…

This is “Moto”?

For about 5 years, I’ve been getting slowed down by pain and the lack of mobility. My knees, especially my left, we’re always painful and heavy feeling…bogged down like I was dragging them thru life whenever I was attempting to walk or stand for more than a few minutes.

A few years back, MC sent me a text from his hospital bed with his “new knee” straight outta surgery and he was already stoked! He had this giant post-surgical melon of a knee…that immediately better motion than his  worn out“stock parts” 🤣

Since then, on a few occasions, he’s asked me “Why haven’t you done your knees, yet?” Ya know, I really didn’t have an answer other than the simple fact that I had a stupid mindset of not wanting to “Take the time to do it.”

Time off from racing…racing that was already being compromised by my knees.

Time off from work…that’s total bs for me. I can work from anywhere on virtually any device…so, yup, that’s a non-issue. Besides, I’ll be able to be back in the office in a matter of days.

The cost: all in and including PT & whatever devices I might have to buy (so far they’ve all been included other than the “Ice Machine” my wife got…’cause she’s jus’ awesome)…all deductibles are gonna add up up to around $7-8K on a $120K+ spend. Also, if I get my other knee done by year’s end…it’ll be cheaper since I’ve paid near the annual limit on my ankle and knee...which is nice.

Look, I know we all have different insurance issues and some may pay less (like the Medicare crowd) and some may pay more,..and, yes, there are some that don’t have coverage or their coverage makes it too damn hard to get your knees covered.

Here’s my message to all of you: if you’ve got pain…something holding you back…something you think might be getting “bad” or “worse”…

Go find answers.
Go get whatever help and assistance you can. Go and take the time to get healthy.

Because, you’re worth it.

Perfect timing! Thank you so much for sharing this. It helps with the second thoughts I  keep having about having this done. But I'm on track, December 4, new right knee. Plan to be back to Moto in spring. Thanks again and happy for you, heal quick!

I’m 3 weeks out from number 2.  Unlike you, my block failed and I had full feeling 15 minutes after surgery.  Kinda sucks, because I was at MAYO Clinic for the highest quality team I could get…. Disappointed in that particular anesthesiologist.  But I expect a different result so I’m going back.

Take the Oxy to help your recovery.  It really helps you break up that scar tissue that otherwise is massively painful.  Max out on stool softener…

As for riding, the “no pain” is so nice.  My knee is a bit looser than I would like, but i’m not a racer, so it’s not highly detrimental.  First one in January and second one in November.  Then it’s on at the gym.  Need both to be notably stronger than they are now.

Good luck on your recovery!

Going to the toilet after oxy, makes you wonder,  "where did that pineapple come from".

and then "where did that pineapple go" when you look in the bowl and all you see is a milk dud...  😖

I have a question

For those who have already had a knee replacement, are you able to ride like it is a good knee?  How does it feel on jump landings, Big or Small jumps?  Race day 2nd moto braking bumps?

Gym workouts like treadmill running, squats, box jumps and burpees?

I can't tell a difference except I had days where I couldn't ride BECAUSE of my shot out knee. It will never be as good as what God gave you but it ain't far off. The only absolute restriction I had from my doctor was no running. I had an outstanding PT guy and when I was finished my legs were stronger than they had been in years.

Happy it went well 💪🏽. I’m 23 , any advice for the knees? Is moto what caused your knee issues you think?

While I'm not answering for OP. but lots of people wreck their knees doing all kinds of stuff. Most of the causes leading to TKR start early. Once you injure your knee, you are at risk. I injured my knee once riding but didn't go to a doctor. My work wore it out. Any pounding, kneeling, or twisting  activity can do it. Little old ladies with no history of racing, wrestling, hiking, running etc. end up with knee replacement. Some people just wear out differently.

3 1/2 years out on a right TKR (with 2 previous surgeries) here:   The repair of the your other ligament damage is what will take the most time to rehab. Your ACL will be removed weather its good or not. The actual knee joint replacement will likely hurt like crazy for a couple weeks due to all the stretching of everything that holds your knee together (so they can get access to do the work) and the aggressive stretching you need to get full extension back. You are a tough motocrosser, so you can deal with it ;-)  At 1-2 months you will see rapid improvement, but will likely feel a lot of numbness above and mostly below the knee cap. I couldn't kneel down on that side for well over a year, but you will be able to. It just takes time. While you will be able to get back on a bike sooner, mine didn't start to feel "right" until about a year + out. HOWEVER, the tremendous pain you are dealing with day-to-day now will be GONE and your quality of life will be so much improved. My surgeon said mine was "right up there" with the worst he's ever seen and that everyone says "i don't know why I waited so long"  My advice would be to do it and get on with your life! Good luck!

I had mine done in 2018 and your experience nailed it practically word for word for me. I was riding in a little over 3 months and at a year I didn't even think of it. My kneeling days were done before TKR so no loss there. i just use a pad and avoid kneeling if I can.

I know this is eventually what it will come down to….going to go with Ortho advice for the next month or 2 & see how I feel…..At this point I can still Moto, Mtn Bike, road cycle and walking is generally ok without limping….Once I get to the point of not being able to do these activities, I will go ahead with the TKR…..I would say at this time my greatest fear is damaging the implement while riding…..

I've landed directly on my knee and hit the ground really hard, like ER for my shoulder, another pissing blood crash 3 times. I guess no twisting my knee type crashes but it sounds like you work at knee injury protection. I'd rather keep riding with a fake knee than let knee pain take me out of it altogether.

While anesthesia really fucks me up, like severe vertigo and puking, it doesn't keep me from moving mud on the regular. After my knee I couldn't open my eyes for the rest of the day, I got room spin like the house in the Wizard of Oz so no walking that day. Everyone except my wife was surprised I was up and had already done the morning dump. I was already pro level on crutches from another moto related surgery.

My DR prescribed 2 different pain meds and oxy was one of them and oxy scares the hell out of me.

My wife worked like clock work giving me the pain meds on time.

2.5 years and the nerves around my knee still are numb.

Yesterday-evening…”the good stuff” (the nerve block) finally wore off…completely.

As many have commented, WHOA! Just like I went thru with my ankle in April…”Here comes The Pain!” Had that 1st night of pain management. Tried…was hopeful…that a 5mg Oxy would do the trick. Nope! Ended up at 10mg. So far, so good. Eventually got caught up on my sleep via some of those good’ol afternoon naps. 🤣

I really appreciate all the input and the opportunity to get “hands-on experience” from my fellow moto-heads.

I agree 100% on the TkR if your bad knee makes you skip the activities you live for…..I am still able to moto, Mtn & road bike, walk and use stairs, granted with some pain & clicking….Once I get to the point of not being able to do any of these activities, I will tell Ortho its time….On a side note: I”m shocked at the amount of people that get TKR and were never really active in sports or manual labor…

I'm 3.5 months out from having my 2nd TKR, 1st was in 2016. Same exact prosthesis this time and I'm familiar with recovery path and milestones along the way. I'm disappointed in this last anesthesiologist over the brachial nerve block- but for the opposite reason. This wasn't my 1st surgery he was involved in so kind of trusted him... They really pushed those nerve blocks (spinal and adductor) but I had a REALLY bad experience in my 20's where a spinal block nearly left me paralyzed and I told them no way! each time they brought it up pre-surgery. I didn't have 1 on any of my multiple previous knee surgeries and saw no need for it now. This anesthesiologist interviewed me in pre-op intake and I said no nerve blocks. He agreed no spinal but kept pushing the leg. My wife was there, and I was very direct with questioning him and making sure my wife heard every bit as my witness what was agreed to. I don't have an addictive personality in any way and high pain threshold and no issues waking from General which I was getting anyways and always wean off the Oxy type stuff in 1-2 days anyways so no concerns there. Done this many times and know my body better than him. He tells me this particular Surgeon dictates nerve block as part of her protocol that has been very successful.

I said if I agree, what is minimum time it will last- he says normally 4-5 days. I said NOPE! not happening I don't need/want that. I asked what is the MINIMUM time you can adjust for? He says 1-2 days. I said if you agree to THAT minimum 1-2 days I'll sign consent- otherwise no block and I'll stick to what works best FOR ME. Made sure wife heard all this. He agrees and surgery is easy and I wake just fine and can stand and get out of bed almost immediately which they all like. Use walker for safety to go to bathroom, etc. No pain in knee and not taking 50% of the oxy the nurses offer on a schedule. Got decent sleep (they kept me overnight as planned) and continued being active next day and passed all little test and assessments for discharge.

Got home and still didn't require much oxy and was switching to Excedrin to replace it like before. Everything good/normal to past experience. Slept in recliner 1st couple nights. Then transition back to bed for 3rd night- restless but tolerable. Next night going the same until around midnight when I was jolted awake by what felt like a flaming bowling ball was dropped on my knee!. Turns out the Anesthesiologist lied to me and gave the dose he normally does and ignored my wishes thinking he knew better. Will never agree to any nerve block again and bail right out of there if they insist.

A friend of mine had both knees done a couple months apart and didn’t take any pain pills for either. He had a pain pump that he used for the first couple weeks, I can’t remember what it pumped into him, but it was non-narcotic. I can’t remember look into it for you, if you’re interested ?

Side note-

My 93 year old grandmother (RIP Melba) had one knee done and wouldn’t take anything but a bayer aspirin once she left the hospital. She was suffering for the first 2 days before my mom got her some pain patches from her Dr, which completely took the pain away. Unfortunately they were fentanyl patches… She needed her 2nd knee done, but said she was not interested in going through that again.

The warning on the patches were “DO NOT apply heat or leave on in the shower” my mom was told that the patches would release too much medicine and would kill her quickly. Had to baby sit her for a good 5 weeks, until they could ween her off of them.

Walk, walk, and walk some more. .

Stair step. .    And lots of them.

Had a post-op on Friday: Doc was stoked on the healing and mobility (went in a week early due to my wife being concerned about swelling and gnarly bruising). X-ray showed the implant was looking good. All things considered…this isn’t nearly as much work or pain as my ankle reconstruction last April.

Thanks for checkin’ in on me. I appreciate it.

That bruise is primarily caused by the tourniquet they use to control bleeding during the surgery.  Mine wasn’t too painful and didn’t show for a while…. But I sure knew it when it decided to show up.

All things considered…pain hasn’t been too bad on this procedure. After having a very involved ankle reconstruction back in April…I’ve got a new perspective on pain. My ankle hurt right out of the gate. They had to grind/re-shape bone and do the micro-fracture trick to the surface of talus and fix ligaments and replace tendons.

Like I said…that one was more painful than this or any previous procedure I’ve had…shoulders, hands, knees, fingers…etc.

So, this one ain’t so bad. Besides, I’m so damn stoked on the mobility, the straighter non-bowed leg and the “new lease on Moto” that I’m probably still riding the stoke wave! 🤣

Glad to hear it’s going good ! Looks like you’re on track to be water tight and infection free. Then it’s full power pt mode. ✊ How mobile are you ? SC Cafe misses you 😂

I hope the knee is doing better. Are you walking yet? I had the 2 plates in my leg removed Friday. I never liked them in there ever since I broke my leg in 2019. So...Doc removed them for me. PLATES REMOVAL NOV 2025
