we all have heard about tracks that have already existed then a neighborhood gets built or even a trailer park goes in next door and they complain and boom track disappears. Also we've all seen tracks thats are nestled in the middle of a housing community and have big races etc and us guys that see/hear about it always wonder how they "get away" with having a kick ass track with so many houses around it.
A lot of counties out side of the city limits have no noise ordinances to prevent stuff like this from city slickers or Nancys moving in next to a farm and then bitching about hearing tractor and mower equipment noise at 6am.
So what do you guys think is generally the "minimum safe distance" with some trees diving the sound between the center of your track and a neighborhood?
reason I ask is I found a property and its got some people about 600-700yards away (sounds far but...you know)
If they can hear it, they’ll complain until it’s shut down. Even if they move in knowing the track is already there. See Starwest for example.
a property with trees will help for visibility and sound. Is it surrounded by trees or just a few tree? You almost need to take your bike out and see if someone can hear it close to their property.
That entirely depends on how cool your neighbors and how well you communicate with them. Sunday afternoon motos around BBQ and beer time could piss off even the best neighbors.
I've seen this with private and public tracks, in many cases people have a prejudice against motorcycles and just want it shut down. No distance is enough for those people.
In a rural area, having a track centered on 20 acres is in my opinion reasonable. I'm on 5 with a track we ride on in the spring and fall. The noise isn't really a problem but the dust is, which is why we only use it on the spring and fall.

Personally I would want minimum of 10 acres.
Mx is dead, get into pickekball and cornhole…no loud noises or dust….on the other hand……have you contacted Professional125 for potential trainer for your new facility? Specialized in 125 2stroke training of course….
FYI: City folk whine something fierce about noisy pickleball courts.
With four strokes I'm not sure you can be far enough away. There are some guys that ride a couple of times a week on a small track that is at least a mile from my house. I hear the thumpers plain as day. I can only imagine what the neighbors are thinking that are closer and are not dirt bike enthusiasts.
If you live in an area where folks have moved from out of state, aren't used to the sounds of rural (agricultural) areas, or near retirement communities...you are screwed if they can even see the track. Never mind, the sound. Someone WILL complain because the Fun Police are everywhere. Even if you were to only ride electric bikes.
That being said, if you check your county rules for noise ordinances and you buy land that is zoned agricultural and you can hide the track from the road your trouble should be minimized.
Buy electric
This would solve the noise issue. In any case, there’s no reason to have an obnoxiously loud bike. Something like a Q Stealth silencer to keep it as quiet as possible wouldn’t hurt. 600 - 700 yards isn’t that far.
Seriously, it's a non issue
Been here through 20 yrs of riding. I tell the "new" neighbors to fuck off
I wouldn’t tell the neighbours to fuck off. I’d bake them cookies and buy them Christmas presents.
I'm an old guy. I don't bake or Xmas shop
🤣
Had a turn track on 4 acres in my neighborhood at the end of a culdesac. Each house was 2 acre parcels min… had 3 neighbors on the opposite street that looked down into the track. Cops only came once, said we can’t really do anything cause it’s your property… so depends I guess.. also tried to not ride more than like 2 hours any given day, weather depending..
I own 6.5 acres where my track and home is located in Zirconia NC. I have neighbors on both sides. We ride after work every wednesday evening. One side are my cousins. In case they are reading this, MOVE THAT POS scrap single wide trailer off the damn property line and all you other damn unsightly JUNK!!
Other side i have a few very nice homes. Nobody has ever complained. But , I rarely have 4-strokes on the place. It is a 2T haven paradise.
Pit Row
There is a local private track that mostly 65, and 85's ride, with a handful of 450s. It is in the middle of the woods, on 50 acres, train tracks that pass behind it. And he's had a lot of problems with sound. The type of trees, how dense the woods are, if its in a valley or on the top of a hill. And also if there is a river or body of water , some sound can travel really well along the water. I'm on a river and when they were redoing a railroad bridge a mile or so through the woods. It sounded like they were in my backyard when they were working over the water. I even walked out to see if somebody was out on my trails with equipment.
If the woods are really dense and there are hills between You and neighbors that can help a ton. That track that has the sound problems is on mostly flat , surrounded by wetlands and that allows the sound to travel more. I'm much closer to houses but have a hill that is sandy gravel thats only about 30' high and it keeps most of the sound from traveling to the neighborhood across the street from me. I never have more than a couple bikes or SXS's going at the same time though so thats also part of it. But You can hardly hear anything from inside my house that is at the front of the property on the opposite side of the hill, when the trees all have leaves on them. Winter time when its frozen and the leaves are gone is different.
I would look into the local codes as far as land use ands any sound restrictions. My land is zoned industrial and allows recreational use and has different bylaws for sound than the track 4 or so miles away that is zoned residential . I have commercial neighbors ( a marihuana shop, tire warehouse, pet food warehouse, a Casino, trade school and other mix of business, but those all are my direct neighbors.) that don't get bothered. I have about 2 miles of woods directly behind my track/trails. I kept as many trees as possible to help keep it hidden from google earth, help keep it moist and also help keep dust from traveling too far when its super dry.
Its not really a universal amount of space needed. A lot of variables that can impact it. As much as possible is best of course.
Get an electric bike or put a quiet exhaust on your bike. I put a turn down quiet tip on my yz450fx and ride it through my neighborhood to get to some river trails. No one ever says anything when I do because my bike is quiet and I ride slow.
Some teenagers got a couple of 4 strokes and one a 2 stroke that all sound like there's no packing left in the mufflers. They ride around like idiots while being super loud and people blow up on Facebook complaining about it.
2 strokes a mile is enough. 4 strokes 3 miles distance.
