Maybe properly fund and modernize the VA.

Do you go to the VA? How long have you been going? I ask because my dad is a Vietnam veteran so he’s been dealing with the VA for 50 years now—he even worked at a VA hospital for about 5 years during that period. His experience with the VA has improved significantly over the last decade. He loves it now, but it seems like the VA hasn’t been great for the younger vets.

The computer system still used by the VA began development in the 1970s. I can literally see twice as many patients in same amount of time at any other hospital because of the computers and systems in place. They hired one of the major medical records vendors in 2018 to update things and it still hasn't happened. That transition takes a few months when any other healthcare organization does it.

The VA does many things well but it was summed up to me quite nicely. The government is incredibly inefficient and they overcome that inefficiency with manpower. The only people who understand it well enough to make it more efficient aren't empowered to do so and even if they were they have little incentive to do so and risk that they're the manpower that gets cut as a result. The notion that DOGE or anyone else can make it more efficient from the outside gives everyone there a good laugh. They can't because they don't understand the problems. All they can do is cut manpower which makes it less efficient, and round and round we go......

I reckon if you make retirees wait till they're 65 to collect that pension...you're gonna lose a lot of future leaders.  The one's that you need to make that shit work.

I'm mostly speaking about the enlisted ranks and just like society in general...there's turds in the mix.  The enlisted folks in that 8 to 16 year range are the ones that know "what to do and how to do it right".  There's a LOT of moving parts in our military.  At the bottom...thats where the muscle is.  At the top...that's where the (hopefully) brains live.  In the middle is where orders are turned into action.  I never really figured out if I "loved to hate"  the military or "hated to love" it.  But I know what it is and how it works.🙃

Just a bunch of administrative cost and waste for basically nothing.

Im guessing you were this vocal about all those bases being renamed under dementia Joe and the waste associated with that, too ?

That was eleven words, so "this vocal" is a pretty low bar, but I definitely spent more than eleven words opposing the destruction of various monuments. I don't remember conversations about bases, but the cost is certainly a lot lower for an individual base. Google "how much will it cost to change the name of the department of defense?" and let me know what you find. And I definitely don't mind consistency tests, because consistency the the measure of honesty. Now let's test yours, were you in support of doge cuts to reduce waste, but now are silent on the waste here? Do you care more about the words on stationary than you do about the services that money could provide?

Seems like by your own account theres alot of institutional knowledge that gets lost every year to retirement. Guys in their 40s and 50s are still valuable even in physically demanding fields and they're really hitting their stride as far as leadership goes. Perhaps a partial retirement could be paid out in exchange for reserve service (greater than the reserve pay) as they get on with their life.

While I've never enlisted myself I've known quite a number of people who have from 18 year old recruits to ROTC path to reservists. From what I gather the military is not immune to political gamesmanship when it comes to advancing in the ranks which isn't surprising, but I've known a number of people that are very very solid individuals that did exit around the 8 to 12 year time frame because they didn't want to put up with the BS of it anymore.

You aren't wrong.  There is is exactly the same bullshittery in the military as civilian life...people are people.

I never cared about "power" but I did recognize that my experience and knowledge was what the system needed to function.

Promotion process is highly politicized, especially O7 and up. Combat and leadership skills often take a backseat to administrative polish and gamesmanship.  Careers can be lost over the most benign events (see Admiral Buzz Donnelly), which trickles down and has some of our best people seeking alternative paths. Been that was for decades, if not centuries.

A couple of the test pilots I worked with were retired Navy O-7's.  One was actually the rare Comodore...short listed then shafted.  Both damn fine men.

Edit...and badass stick jockeys.

Buzz not getting 7th Fleet was definitely a let down, he's a really good guy, and would have done well in the job. My oldest actually dated his youngest daughter for a couple of years in high school.

As for changing DoD to DoW, I'm ok with it as long as it comes with the requirement for congressional approval to use it.

What’s happened to Buzz is a systemic issue plaguing the military.  He was caught in DEI blowback and lost a promotion due to something that has zero to due with his leadership skills.  The same guy who gave Buzz a thumbs-down now wants to change the name of the DoD.  It’s not good for morale, and negatively impacts mission readiness.

For a guy who campaigned on peace and anti-war, he sure is contradicting his promises. Examples: missile attacks on Iran, Dept of WAR, the social media post threatening war on Chicago. He also said he would end the war in Ukraine in 24hours if elected. How’s that going?  What do you expect from a convicted liar/fraud?
