What's the story on the big dent in the trophy?

When they were handing Jett the championship trophy, it's got a big ass dent in the lower ring.

Any story about that?

I asked the Honda guys, and they said it’s been like that for a few years.

So that’s a traveling trophy, not the trophy that Jett actually gets to keep?

Maybe it’s just used for display purposes? Like he will get one later on with his name on it? Just my thought

It's the Edison Dye Cup...  like in many sports, there is a Cup that the champ possesses, engraved with the names of the previous champs.  The MXdN has the Chamberlain Trophy, same concept.

Edison Dye was a promoter who in the 60's and 70's who provided venues and races for MX to make it's way from Europe to the U.S.

I believe the Gary Jones cup is the concept given to the 250 National Champ.  Gary Jones was a multi-time National Champ in the 70's.  Both of these are relatively new for pro moto.  I like the idea.

I wonder if they keep it at HRC or the riders hold onto it?   Jett's first 450 outdoors, he sat in the tent looking at the names of the previous champs, which was very cool.

Sorry I'm an old guy who likes the nostalgia and respect for the past.

Plus one for liking that Jett has some admiration of the history he is now making his mark on.

Also, what's with the thumb down on that post?

It looked really light and flimsy.  I figured that is the one they used on the podium and they send them the real deal after the fact.

I was just wondering if there was some legendary story behind it or story of stupidity

They must not know you can fill it with water and put it in the freezer...

Don't know what the story is or if that's the real trophy or if they have a fake one like the Stanley Cup but having a big dent in the sports biggest trophy might be the most peak moto thing of all.

In an industry full of specialists on exhaust systems dent removal.....

That’s the real trophy and yes it’s dented.

The Stanley Cup and various other big name annual (and elderly) trophies carry some battle scars as well.  Some worse then others.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/jun/19/stanley-cup-damage-florida-panthers

The Edison Dye Cup is no exception. I forgot who dented it - but it I think it happened around the Dungey era.

Usually the cup goes home to the OEM for display at the “home” office and then gets called back when a championship is on the line.  In this case KTM had the trophy and it went home with Honda.

One year Cooper Webb almost lost the Gary Jones cup. When it came time to send it back, he had no idea where it was. Something about an Ex and a move, if my memory is correct. It eventually surfaced.

I think it adds character.

I mean,...who would want to fix all the delamination from the booze Grant L. drank out of it after his 07 450 championship?

Wrong answers only:

Ron Lechien tripped over some of David Bailey's exercise equipment (never saw it, in more ways than one,) and knocked it off the table onto RJ's footpeg once in the Honda pits. (Bonus points if you can detect my error about those three riders.)

J-Law was holding onto it for James Stewart in 2008. It was in the trunk of his rental car, and, well... you know.

RC thought it was someone's ass, so he kicked it.

SI had Dungey hold it in front of him during the body shoot.

Maybe the pointy end of one of these bolt-ons bumped it.

I snorted. We can't get a comment on 100 hot topics in this sport from anyone around our "media" but by golly, we have instantaneous confirmation via team sources...about the dent in the trophy. I love this sport. ;-)

I thought the same thing. It seemed like it was made out of CHEAP plastic like they use to have in those cracker jack boxes. Probably had a made in China sticker on the bottom. 🙄

It was so obnoxiously OVERSIZED I can't believe well, actually I do believe now that I think about it, the AMA would choose this as a proper championship trophy to give to Jett on the podium. It was an embarrassment to the sport IMO.

Whether it was not the real trophy for him to keep or not, at least make it look somewhat real, instead of something they would give Godzilla.
