450 gate twitch? JETT DOCKED 1 LAP

Some of you have never been behind a gate before and it shows. And apparently also don’t understand how rules work. It’s not a murky conspiracy, I personally think Jett is awesome but he hit the gate and then took it forward. That’s a penalty, and if you don’t comprehend it then maybe you should be more focused on understanding the rules than offering your uneducated opinions and solutions.

He ran the gate over. He had an advantage even though he hesitated after that. A full lap is pretty harsh. If the rule book says that is the penalty it should be applied. The teams can lobby to change the rule. 

Yep.  And the severity of the penalty is an entirely different discussion.

They already have some time penalties, maybe that’s a better solution.  Certainly, the one lap is absurd.

I think the police should start handing out tickets for 1 mph over the speed limit.  Rules are rules.

I re-read motodude’s reply to my post and he mentioned some were chained, which I believe is the way it was a Lake Whitney when I got stuck. 

It seems to me that if they were chained, it wouldn’t affect anyone else’s gate if you hit it. 

They got that call right. He will recover and move on.

The gate needs to be updated . Or go back to using  a bungee. 

They couldn't enforce. If everyone jumped the gate simultaneously, only then would they have to change the rules by either ratcheting up toward capital punishment or using tech to find the worst X number of offenders. Certainly would like to see this applied to taxes just to see what the outcome would be.

And back then the rule was 1 position loss.  I think that  a lap for that kind of gate jump is appropriate . And a spot for what Jett did would be more realistic. 

 But the rule is the rule. I still feel like they interpreted it incorrectly though. 

Its pretty weird to penalize someone an entire lap for them getting a DISadvantage. He got a garbage start, its one thing if he jumps the gate and rips a fat holeshot. His start was ass and he had to come through the entire pack. Made no sense at all to punish him for getting a shit start. 


Also Jeremy Hand is the one who flinched first causing jett to go. Jett should be better, but mistakes happen.

I get it , it just seems like a 1 lap penalty is excessive.

I think they could hit them with a time penalty like in F1. Whatever time it is, 15, 20, 25 seconds? Just tack that on at the end of the race.

It’s probably in this thread somewhere but how did Sexton ram the gate in SX and it not fall forward? I’m not trying to start anything. Just genuinely interested.  

Well, since you bring up F1, they have a specific penalty in the rule violation.  Then the driver gets said penalty…and then complains it’s too harsh.  Sound familiar?  Lobby to change the penalty…don’t ask for special treatment.  The AMA used to do that a lot.  Drove me crazy.  Jett hit the gate hard enough to flip it forward.  Same gate as every other racer on the line.  Not defective or anything.  Bambam hit the gate too and consciously let it drop backwards.  He was last off the gate…but no penalty…which is correct.  Jett’s bad start was actually because his front wheel was basically off the gate and the back wheel was hoping all over from going over the bar/gate in the rut…but he was going for it as hard as he could.  Bambam just backed off and ate a ton of roost….but most importantly didn’t hit the gate hard enough to flip it forward.  Funny thing is Jeremy Hand, yes again effecting a race outcome, made both of them hit the gate by flinching.  Webb tries to do that to riders on purpose sometimes.

So if somebody jumps the start and gets stuck in the gate, they too get docked a lap right?   

No. 

 So the penalty was for breaking the gate?  Not jumping the start?   

I hope they change the rule to allow some judgement by the official and factor intent into the decision.   

I see it as just extremely bad luck. The gate almost never flips forward.  I have hit a gate so hard I endo'ed over the bars, LOL.

I bet Jet could try 50 times to replicate that outcome and not have it happen.  That's the issue, one guy hits it and gets stuck under the gate, the next guy hits it and it happens to flop up.  Only the 2nd guy gets a penalty... That doesn't seem right, but I do understand the need for for some type of rules to cover these areas.

No, they suffer the consequences of the self penalizing gate.  They leave the line after they have pulled their bike back and start in 40th, not 23rd like Jett did.

Jett’s first mistake was hitting the gate that hard…. His second and more serious mistake was going hard immediately after hitting the gate.  That’s what caused the penalty.  

Yes the penalty seems harsh and should be reviewed.  But they enforced it as written.

If the gate flopping forward is the determining factor here, then they need to put some type of restraint mechanism on the gate to keep it from flopping over like it did for Jett. Like a spring that will eventually break away. Look at the video. He hits the gate, stops, and the gate continues to flop forward because it has no restraint. What a f*cking shit show AMA.

And like others have mentioned.. What was he supposed to do? Get off his bike and flip it back?

Jett has every right to be pissed about that.

If he would have been stuck behind the gate for some time, the penalty would have been 20 positions worse than what he got by just going through the gate.

The rule can stay, just add that you need to let the active field pass hole shot line (being "last") if it happens. Only way to mimic what should actually happend if you hit the gate.

It seemed like an excessive penalty, but people have objected a lot over the years that any subjective discretion in these situations usually favors the top guys and covers their errors.  Definitely no favors in this case.

He didn't though. He let everybody go after he got a half bike length lead .  He could get stuck and back up and still come out like he did.    The rule was made to stop people from intentionally jumping the gate ( jumping it like a jump)  after Jlaw was doing it and not caring that he would get a 1 spot penalty. 

It wasn't intended for what Jett did.  The strength of the gate determined if he got a penalty or not. Some gates are even made to do that and You can not get stuck in them.  

I'm arguing that they are not acting in the spirit of the rule and.  

Mike Pelletier argued that he did not have a choice to not penalize him. The rule book says that there MAY be a penalty  and then outlines first offence and second penalties. To me that does not imply that Mike had the choice between DQ and loss of a lap. He had the choice of enforcing the penalty  or not, and then the penalty is set.

  Matthes said that Mike  said he interpreted  the  "may"  to mean he had a choice of a lap of DQ. Not that he had the choice to not penalize . If I had only read the first part of the rule I may agree or understand how he could think that. But 20 pages later they outline the penalties  and make it clear that there is not choice between penalties. So that to me, would imply that there is a choice to determon if the rule was broken or not.
