MXGP Finland - WTF - I Don’t Know Man…

7/14/2025 1:30am

Agree with all the comments on here; it was embarressing to watch. And who thought it was a good idea to make the first corner a narrow S-bend with a wall on one side so that anyone going wide had nowhere to go, apart from over the top and into the drainage bog.? Meanwhile anyone with a good start just straight-lined it through.? Shockingly bad...

It is really hard to see. We have races with amazing scenery, filled gates and fan turnout (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic) and we have absolute shit tracks with - most of the time - no atmosphere and heart. I feel for these riders, because the level is incredibly high. If you compare these races with Spring Creek, it’s night and day difference.

I don’t want to bring this as an Ama vs GP debate at ALL, but the level is quite similar in both series. You can see it with Guillod his results compared to last year in GPs. But the atmosphere, man.. This year I attended Agueda, which was great. But if yoi watched Cozar, Spain.. man that was awful. I couldn’t even watch it on TV. Then, I’ll attend Lommel and Arnhem already knowing it’s magical and awesome events. The contrast between these races is sad.

50% of the GPs are awesome, 50% unwatchable.

And it's so unnecessary that 50% are unwatchable GP's.

A GP in Finland that is added later in the season, on a date that clashes with national championship, in the middle of summer when there was a break in the calendar, in Finland as a stand alone (so for most teams/riders at least a 24h non stop drive), with EMX250 as a support class.... Infront should have known to expect these low rider numbers.

Same with the track. When you see this track, or Switzerland, or the one in Spain, it's like Infront has no requirements for the quality of the track. Which imo is insane, because essentially it just devalues their product massively.

Did you make any? Impressive to even get to the point of trying to qualify.

No i did not, I also tried to qualify for A1 in 1999, there I broke my wrist 🤣🤣🤣

I was a great rider 😅

I think the biggest issue was the late replacement of Indonesia for Finland (on March 6th). A lot of the smaller teams don't have the budget to go to Indonesia, but it doesn't mean that when it gets replaced by a European venue they automatically will make the trip, since all the budgets had been settled long before the announcement.

Guys like Van de Moosdijk, Spies, Ludwig, Weckman et cetera ride for German based teams, so I think it makes sense they raced the ADAC series in Bielstein, as it's probably stated in their contract to race the German Championship anyway. And the German round was planned on this date as everyone assumed the Indonesian round was going to take place like planned. Gifting was training on his own last weekend, so his team just couldn't make the trip.

Adding the injuries of Gajser, Renaux, Herlings, Jonass, Zanchi, Braceras,.. the field got depleted even more.

All in all, not a good look for Infront (again).

Imo the issue is not that it was a replacement but that Infront does not think about all these valid points you make, or worse not care.

I love watching MXGP; the competition is on par with AMA, as is the skill level, but what Outback Moto is doing to the series is unforgivable.

Kymiring has been a complete shit show even before this race. This was a desperate attempt to just host an event there.

Sorry to bother, I had a good time watching.

😉

What's actually amazingly boring is this kind of thread. Useless waste of time and energy, since you can rant and rave all you want, it won't change a thing. At least bashing Infront is a refreshing change over crapping on RC or Will Christien.

There were 15,500 enthralled (but invisible) spectators there, according to Infront’s imaginary statistics department.

Looked at bit half ass. But they did cancel the contract for the new Spanish track since it did not perform/work last year. Maybe this one won't get a renewal for next year unless they step up.

So its not true that they dont care or think about it.

Maybe the organizer promised to fulfill everything and didnt. Some stuff are soft values that you maybe don't catch until there is a race. Cutting the grass is not a Infront task. And it wasn't done.

Its not easy to find venues that has the space and infrastructure to handle a GP. You also need an organizer to work with that has credible capability at hand when it comes to man power and financials.

I'm picking up your sarcasm but I'm certain you were a beast. Anyone trying to make the big show is. Theres levels to this game so I realize you're hard on yourself. My buddy who gave qualifying for Southwick last year one last shot thinks hes just ok, too. Dude is so fast

I had higher hopes Finland could deliver a decent gp.

They failed on pretty much every point.

Wildcard riders ✅

At least they were lucky with the weather. I know there’s a huge interest for motorsport in Finland so I’m actually quite surprised how bad the event turned out! Any input from out members from Finland?

Thank you for the kind words. But I was just trying to live the moto dream, moved to the US to give Supercross a go. And later Italy to race the Italian championship. It didn’t work out. But the memories stay with me forever.

Glen Helen Invitational 1999. I’m old 🤣

What part of this race made it worthwile watching, if you compare it to - for example - Loket, Ernee, Lommel, Arnhem, Teutchental? Where most of the times we will have an additional of 10+ Privateer/wildcard riders attending?

The level of the riders is incredibly high, that's a given. But I'd rather watch them going bar to bar with thousands of fans on the sidelines compared to another manmade track without any atmosphere, like Turkey, Indonesia, Cozar.

I'll give Switzerland a pass due 'some' attendance of fans. But a quick Google search of the Swiss Championship gives me a better result then Frauenfeld (even though I'm not aware nor have the knowledge of paddock space and logistics) : Fullhouse am Motocross Wohlen - moto.ch

Next round at Loket there will probably be full gates again.

- No EMX250-round so maybe some of them will line up in MX2
- Some Czech and Slovak wildcards like Kohút, Kovář, Terešák, Rathouský, Venhoda, Janout,...
- Some Germans like Spies, Ludwig, Scheu, Nickel,...
- Marcel Stauffer is Kohút's teammate at Osička MX Team, so he'll probably line up aswell
- Gajser is back on the bike, maybe Renaux and Jonass or Braceras and Rossi will return...

It's crazy how different two GP's can be.

What infrastructure is needed for 5,000 spectators and 16 riders on a start gate, that past tracks with 30,000+ spectators and 150 riders going for qualifying couldn't handle.?

So tired of the "infrastructure" excuse for shit tracks.

I can tell you never organized a national or bigger event.

You have up to 40 riders in MXGP. 40 in Mx2. 50-60 in 125. 40 in Women. 50-60 in EMX 250. On a good day it's just 150 to deal with. On a bad day it's 250 with all classes.

It was over 180 in Finland so not sure of your mathskillss.

You need parking areas and ground conditions for a shit load of trucks plus easy access in and out for material. You need to be able to meet requirements for clearing the area in case of emergency for up to 20k visitors. Cities need to provide clearance and so does local police. Just the area for teams is huge when we are talking about 250 riders. A smaller event with good w ather you will get 20k visitors during weekend, 15k unique ones.

Around 10.000 hotel nights is required. The organizer shall be able to facili over 500 people to work during the event (we have had around 200-250 for national events).

Wash racks is needed. I can tell you that is not an easy thing for 300 riders. Ive done it for 200+ riders and we needed 40 wash racks built up with drainage. This needs to be close to pit area.

The city, or a private entity, needs to issue financial warranties towards the club because they don't have the means to take a hit if it rains and it generate a negative result.

How many do you think have the infrastructure to handle such an event? I can tell you it's not that many.

I’m watching the qualifying races from Finland and I’m really disappointed.

1. Location looks like a post thermal nuclear site.  UGLY.

2. Shit, infield/parking lot track. Come on?!?!  Finland is beautiful and has great natural terrain.

3. NO spectators. Turn out as bad as Southeast Asia races.

4. No way to watch the racing if you did show up. Flat infield/parking lot track offers no vantage points for fans.

WTF?!?!

P.S. I won’t even get into only 20 bikes lined up for MX2 and 21 for MX1.

I was thinking the same thing! Just a sh!%%y track and location. Fan experience looked dismal. Not a good look at all.

...and I can tell you never went to a GP in the 80's or 90's...

You could have anything up to 150 riders trying to qualify for one class along with support races, non qualifier races etc, and that's before they started combining classes meaning multiple groups for qualifying. Don't even get me started on crowd numbers compared to today.

"You need parking areas for a shit load of trucks" - and there's issue number 1; the track takes second place to the car park because of all the huge rigs. They find a car park first then try to crowbar a track around it. How many classic tracks have been binned to be replaced by faceless flat areas with sand trucked in.?

Everything else you mention is stuff that's been made "neccessary" at the expense of decent tracks. It's no good having awesome background facilities if there's no room left for a decent track. It's the tail wagging the dog. By all means keep going down a corporate dead-end trying to make the sport "professional" but how's that working out.? Empty start gates, no spectators, and people switching off the TV. They don't tune in to compare race trucks and facilities..

I can tell you that 20 years ago early 2000 there was around 75-80 riders in total in 3 classes (30+27+19).  There was 32 in MX2 so two extra was there that didnt qualify. Data is there, took the time to look over it.

Not sure what you are going at, but its not the promotors fault that campers, riders and factory teams have gone to bigger rigs, is it? So blame yourself and the people around you for there being a need for certain infrastructure today.

You would like to run MXoN at Perris, or Pax Track? Because those are equal to what they used to run MXoN on in 90is and it aint a positive thing.

1990 Mx of nations had around 10k visitors. You have about 25-30k per day today. Its the same for selected races during the year, 15-20k i know since im visiting one and its within the community where i operate. So its not polished numbers by Infront.

Its selective memory everything was better before.

At best you can aruge that some years or some things was better.

Most of people knew beforehand that that the track was shitty (lots of social media discussion about the track building) for viewing and the fastest Finnish riders weren't even riding there. Plus the expensive tickets so it was an easy choice to stay home or head to nearest beach instead.

What got me into watching and following GP"s was the uniqueness of the tracks and the beauty of the surrounding areas. I always thought the Citadel was cool as shit. To this day I'd love to ride it even though I know I can't. I'm slowly seeing that uniqueness disappear as is my interest in the series. When riders are on record saying they don't want to push it in some races because of where it is located for fear of getting hurt and getting horrendous health care, something is wrong. I still watch but it's getting to be meh for me.

Paddock presence is greater than track presence with GP’s Edit: I must admit MXGP-TV is really good

16 active MX2 riders?

What's to stop a guy like me from flying to Europe, renting a bike and taking 17th overall in my one and only GP race?

Nothing, the brother-in-law from Coldenhoff did it in Turkey if I'm not mistaken.

Basically Luongo priced out the privateer from racing mxgp?

Isn't that what Gypsymoto wants to do? Get rid of the privateer?

Fucking elitist snobs

Was on site watching. Kinda regret spending (too much) money on the ticket now, only redeeming factor being that I got to spend the day with a friend. Going to just list why:

- Amount of GP/MX2 participants a joke
- Track environment not pleasing to the eye at all
- Event arrangements seemed sloppy all around
- Rules seemed to prohibit spectators from bringing anything of their own to drink. It wasn't enforced on me as I got to bring a few bottles of water. Others said they weren't allowed even that. And it was sunny, 29 celsius / 85 freedom units
- All noise makers prohibited as well, so much for atmosphere
- Only two access points to refill water and both of them served it sun-heated
- Zero stands to watch from = couldn't really see anything despite low attendace
- As said, viewing areas too far fom the track and only covered half or less of the area around the track. 30% of the track was completely out of sight
- High fences everywhere obstructing view, couldn't think of any reason for them being there instead of half-cut fences
- Only a few booths selling merch, basic KTM, Husq and Yamaha. Official MXGP merch didn't have any visible pricing either. Tho I think it was been this way for a long time
- 1-day ticket for sunday ended up being 85 euros (99usd) and parking another 17eur/20usd. Way too steep considering you HAD to provide your own seating, which apparently was also against the rules.

I was happy when I heard that MXGP was returing to Finland and I hope it will again. But the game has to be upped. A lot.

Man, that sounds terrible.
