All I can tell you is this rumor goes back AT LEAST 25 years. My neighbor and his buddies would joke about it on the desert riding trips we all took together. I was 15 years old and thought it was the funniest shit at the time.
When I bring it up now it's just me carrying it on as a nostalgic nod. I've heard/seen it mentioned over and over randomly at races, at the track, etc. countless times over the years. I don't know (or care) if it's based on anything real. If real, it would have been an 80s or 90s guy.
Edit: Hell, for all I know the rumor started 40+ years ago. Who knows! Just one of those things that kept going.
