Probably not the most productive place to have any discussion along these lines so I get shutting it down but not real sure why certain posts were deleted and others weren't? Oh well....

Peace and love to all!

I was going to delete more in that thread but once I locked it, I can't modify it at all.

I think he's saying ML has soft skin, and he would like to get with ML. At least that's how I interpreted that.

I'd say that's a conservative number.

Is it unfair to feel that if black people don’t want white people to use that word, then they shouldn’t either?! A word is either offensive, or it isn’t. No matter who says it.

It doesn’t make sense.

Considering the history of the word I don’t think it’s unfair the way things are, ok for them not for us.

I do think that gives the word more power but that’s a different discussion for a different day.

First you can't say "black people" with assumption all black people are cool with it within that community.

Beyond that, fair is not the point, it begs the question of intent.  Within a group it can intend shared identity, between groups it raises potential malicious intent to demean/disregard/disrespect the person. It's one thing for me to call another white boy a cracker, another if a black person calls me a cracker.  Try calling someone from the Appalachians a hillbilly if you're not one yourself.

Ideally people would just be just decent to one another about this stuff and not careless or indifferent, and have the humility to appreciate you don't share the experiences other people have.  It's not a big deal not to use certain labels to refer to a group if some people in the group are offended by it.

Just some thoughts.

Why do white people think it's unfair that they can't use a certain word if others can (putting aside that whether those others should is debatable - I'm sure that many members of the black community don't appreciate it)? "Unfair" implies that someone else is enjoying a benefit of which you are being deprived. What exactly are you being deprived of? Is this really a hardship for you? If you have the irresistible urge to say that word and it causes you genuine angst to not be able to indulge that urge, then please get some help. Otherwise just carry on with your life and speak in ways that don't make you an asshole. It's difficult to overstate how stupid this is becoming.

Isn’t it essentially saying “we are this group of people and we can say & do this. But because you aren’t one of us, you must not say or do this.”

I’m trying to think of one single thing that white people do or say that is forbidden for others to say/do.

Can you think of anything?

No, it's different. Black people have more license to use it, it's that simple. When they say it, it's humorous. When white people say it, it's an insult. I'm not a big Liberal or anything but I believe this to be true.

This may be one of the least intelligent replies within the entire thread.

Seems like it’s clear to me- Michael asked for the word to not be used, in full or censored. And within this thread it hasn’t. So seems like the message has been read and understood.

White people weren’t enslaved in the USA and given that name as a slur by their enslavers. Plenty of black Americans don’t like the word or using it either.

There are certain religious/ethnic groups that can use slang/slur to refer to each other that wouldn’t be acceptable for outsiders.

Yep

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the white Europeans that were enslaved in the United States.were called or referred to as "indentured servants". Which by today's standard could very well mean Employee.

Was working for a GC building a house for a billionaire. Home owner tried to make a joke saying I was gonna become his indentured servant. Did not go over well.
