Sad thing for him is that he gets himself worked into a conniption from his own BS, hence his "FFS" at the end.

Magoofan is to the Lawrence bros as Herr Lich is to Deegan and Webb.

Hollywood sure is a sinister place. Imagine only getting an invite only because you're rich and famous.

It's not a Hollywood event. It's much too exclusive for those ruffians.

It was originally a New York old money gala, but has evolved into a cross-section of that plus the fashion industry, and, yes, it is a high-society thing.

Nah. Hollywood, in general, are far too common. This is true upper-crust cool kids stuff.

Actors, athletes, fashion models, musicians, business moguls, politicians, etc. Kind of hard to assign it to one industry or group, other than being exclusive.

I can see it lending some tiny amount of popular-kids-lunch-table factor for potential out-of-industry sponsors.

We always talk about distraction in our sport. Does this not seem to be a huge distraction?

It’s an annual charity fundraiser benefiting the Museum of Modern Art.

My unpopular opinion for MX shrinking to what it is now is the phenomenon of the shrinking/disappearing middle economic class in the US. I’ve done the research and have it scribbled down on some notebook paper, but I took a few Motorsports and compared the costs to participate in their heyday, (I chose the late 70s to early 80s for MX) compared to what the relatively same equipment cost now. You’d be pretty shocked to see that a ton of MX stuff like bikes, gear, riding fees really just have kept up with inflation through the years.

When comparing the circle track racing costs from the 80s and what my dad spent on a set of Hoosier tires to now is just asinine, and the overall rules and classes of cars have changed so much to where there is hardly anything that is a “stock” class anymore. The average man is just about truly out priced in that world.

I think the biggest threat to the growth/health of our sport is the cost of living is rising uncontrollably. Motocross was and always will be a niche sport even if we were on ESPN or Jay Leno. I think a huge portion of the Jay Leno debacle that gets overlooked is that Jay is a huge motorsports guy himself, I’m sure he had some pull in getting MC and RC there.

1974 Honda CR125 - $889 ($5,182 in 2024 dollars)

In 1975, the middle class range in the US was generally considered to be between $13,720 and $16,600 per household ($79,971 and $96,758 in 2024 dollars).

A CR125 that year was about 6.5% of the lowest yearly  middle income, and 5.4% of the highest.

2024 Yamaha YZ125 - $7,199

2024 Yamaha YZ250F - $8,899

In 2024, middle-class household income in the U.S. typically ranges from approximately $50,000 to $150,000.

A 2024 YZ125 was 14.4% of the lowest yearly middle income, and 4.8% of the highest.

A 2024 YZ250F was 17.8% of the lowest yearly middle class income, and 5.9% of the highest.

In 1975, about 60% of the US population was considered middle class.

In 2024, about 51% of the US population was considered middle class.

Just some info to go along with Rickyisms opinion, which is an opinion I mostly agree with 🙂

MSRP on the 74 CR125 was only $749. If that bike cost only rose as much as inflation, then the ‘entry’ adult racer (250F) would have an MSRP of just under $4900. The 25 CRF250 has an MSRP of $8300, 70% higher than the CPI average. What does seem like hasn’t increased as much as inflation is some of the gear, especially pants.

Oh dang, I used a 1975 Honda CR125 as my data point (50 years apart) but I mistyped and put 1974.

Thanks for catching that 😎

Damn Democrat keyboards!!! 😁😁

Also, thanks for the additional info!

Well, if it's humid out and 90 degrees in the shade, what, pray tell, would you suggest they wear? A Versace lambswool coat and Dolce & Gabbana waist-high boots?

I think most people are waaaay overthinking this event. The proper thing to compare it to is probably a concept car show. The vast majority of the ‘fashion’ displayed at The Met isn’t really for release to the masses, it’s artwork (even if most of us don’t really care for the art) that stretches the imagination a bit. This Toyota concept from 10 years ago hasn’t been made for the public, but maybe a little bit of the design touches have influenced a few vehicles over that decade.

Hey! Heyyyyyy! 🤣 I am dead.

Anyway, the sport will grow exactly 0% from this. It IS already widely available to the masses. People don't care. It isn't relatable and that's just how it is.

The Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref watch he’s sporting is nice and non typical. Nice to see he didn’t go with a tool watch like a Rolex.

Its rapped about but it's not flashy enough for a lot of rappers. They are costly but subtle.

Right. Its extremely dangerous and expensive. Its also a lot harder to find places to ride, versus say basketball. There are courts everywhere. Its a niche sport and always will be

Them and AP are mentioned, but if you look on the wrist of anyone in that space they're probably wearing a Richard Mille.
