So… a factory 250 is more like a stock 450 than a stock 250 for a practice bike?
Stock 450 is probably economical to practice on relative to having to rebuild a fully built 250 every 10-20 hours. I always loved jumping from a 450 to a 250, you really feel like you can throw it around.
Would be cool to see Kitchen race the last few Supercrosses on the Factory 450.
What a panther, so cool to see him back on the bike, at this rate he can get a comfy amount of training before we go outdoors. Deegan seems to have it but if he’s focused on wrapping up a SX title that could be an open door for Kitchen, Vialle, Hampshire, Masterpool, Shimoda, Hymas, etc
Kitchen's riding style is definitely going to transfer very well to a 450 whenever that time comes.
PC riders always have 450s to burn laps on during Supercross season when their 250s are setup for SX.

PC’s first 4-strokes had a 2hr complete motor rebuild time. I’m sure their current motors are a better. Maybe 5hrs?

They don’t practice on full race motors.
Red Bull KTM 250 was 15 hours last I checked.

Respectfully, I think you’d be surprised. A pro circuit rider put 20 hours on one before a rebuild last summer according to his practice mechanic. Let’s look at it in simple terms of parts modified for power:
-valvetrain, typically upgraded for reliability (springs, dlc coated shim buckets or lifters, possibly oversized valves. If anything they’re likely more reliable.
-guides and seats, moldstar 90 or beryllium seats are FAR less likely to chip and fail. Again, more reliability.
-rods, upgraded for reliability, maybe a different length, but that’s not hurting reliability and actually a long rod I believe reduces side load on the piston (could be wrong). Switching to plain bearing rod can be less reliable if you can’t generate the needed oil pressure though.
-pistons, these aren’t really a point of failure on modern four strokes with forged pistons. There’s works pistons that start out life as a standard forging before getting custom profiles and gas ports. I can’t think of a forged piston failure in my 25 four strokes I’ve owned… just cast oem pistons on kawasakis in 2010-14.
-cams would be the one thing that could cause reliability issues, but these are built by people with crazy resources and knowledge. They can calculate the exact amount of spring pressure needed for each cam profile at the point of highest valve acceleration (not necessarily max lift btw) for a given RPM. Each valve and spring assembly will be measured and documented it’s spring set length and pressure.
-ECU, this can break stuff REAL quick if the wrong person is programming or setting RPM limits. But a factory team isn’t putting someone on a time bomb, and would likely run motors well past the standard service limits to test what weaknesses exist.
