Funny story about Robbie Smith.
Him, Marley, Cory Green, Reynard, Ryan Voit, Demuth, and several other fast guys out of Texas showed up one weekend at Cooperland for a Loretta qualifier or an Okie state race (can't remember, it was a couple years ago) I was covering for Cycle News. In the 450 Pro class, Smith nailed the start and took the F off. Behind him in the first turn was a big pile up and it slowed everyone down a few seconds. Reynard and Marley both got bad starts and were held up in traffic for a bit, but Smith was out front just tearing it up.

Well, Reynard finally got into second and was just smooth as glass and not pushing it at all. On the last lap, he got to the top side of the track and Smith was lying in the mud by where the old sewer pipe used to seep out of the ground slightly. He was trying to get back up as RR17 went by.

After the race, I asked RR how he caught Smith who by then had almost a minute lead on everyone. RR says, "Huh? I thought he had crashed behind us and I was lapping him." But then I told him how big a lead Smith had and he almost didn't believe me.

So I then went to ask Smith what had happened and his response was something like, "Dude....it smells like shit up there! I'm covered in it!".


Jacob Martin (injuries and IMO burned out a little there near the end)

Yes Chuck, he did burn out at the end but his dad was partly to blame for that. He pushed him way to hard when he was younger and racing had become more of a job than something that was fun.

Mini dads can really suck.

Hammertime already mentioned him, but I'll never forget the first time i saw Rick Simmet blasting his 86 cr 80 around a track. So smooth and fast lap after lap.

The funnest guy to watch was Lance Smail. EXTREME body english on the bike. He basically threw his rm 125 back to earth off every jump.

Trey Jorski was untouchable for a lot of years in Ok.
Clay Hoenshell was super fast and almost won Ponca in 1980, I think a crash in the third moto cost him the championship.

Yeah chad wollaston came out to cali in 1997 and lived with upton that year. Chad ,Don and myself hit up all the west coast supercrosses and nationals along with a handfull of local races. I still talk to both of them on a regular basis. Who are you OFFROADTODAY?... maybe i know you

Those were 3 I thought would all end up killing the pros. Willie was one of the fastest mini bike riders Indian Dunes ever saw. Only mini rider out of the Dunes I think was faster was Erik Kehoe.

I was sure Brandon Layton would be factory and very well could of if he didn't lose his life riding when he was like 12 years old. I also thought Ryan Abrigo and Mike Corder had a shot.

Last thing I heard was that he may have been in a car accident in Marysville.

Anyone remember Andy Jefferson? He flat hauled at Adelanto Raceway back in the 80's. Gave Rocket Rex Staten a run for his money all the time. He got a factory Husky ride and DNF'd almost every moto.

The Deatley bros used to haul ass on 80s up here. Cleaned everyone out and dropped out of the whole scene.
Always though Kiel Krogstadt would be on a factory team someday too. Dude used to clean up the pro class all weekend when he was like 13.
