Ahem…when did The Canadian PM visit maralago?  When those changes were announced by Canada on the 17th, what was the motivation for them, as widely reported in the media, (threat of Tarrifs)…you’re dead wrong on this.  Those changes announced on the 17th were because of the meeting with Trump at Mara Lago…where Trump told Canada there would be tarrifs if they didn’t beef up their border…they are securing their border, so tariffs postponed for 30 days…we will see where things stand at that point.  But make no mistake, the threat of tariffs was the reason for the Dec 17th announcement.

you’re wrong about Canada…care to be wrong about Mexico playing him as well?

Humans are complicated. Nobody does everything right or everything wrong. So, when you see one group defending everything an individual does and another criticizing everything, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle (though possibly closer to one side or the other). Partisanship pushes people to one or the other of these extremes and away from the truth. The left’s portrayal of Trump is inept and frequently misleading. (Eg the way they portrayed his comment about Liz Cheney, saying he told his support injest bleach - in general, giving the least charitable interpretation of everything he says). The right’s is unapologetically uncritical (on social media anyways - Republicans Senators are occasionally willing to say that they disagree with him on occasion - at least temporarily). I don’t care for him as a person but I don’t expect anyone to care, and I’m willing to entertain the possibility that he’s actually being clever with how he’s wielding the threat of tariffs to get something he wants in the short term, as well as sending a larger message to the world. Or not. But I do think he’s being purposefully opaque to keep his opponents (and he seems to always see the other party in a negotiation as an opponent) off balance. Im going to see how everything plays out before judging with any significant degree of confidence.

I try to be non partisan. If you’re non partisan then the result tends to be that nobody likes you. I’m fine with that.

I think most Canadians are saddened by the idea that there would be an adversarial relationship between our countries such that the idea of anyone feeling threatened would even come up. Our relationship has long been one of friendship. Look up some of the stories of how Canadians took in American travellers stuck in Canada on 9/11. We’ve fought alongside each other in numerous wars. When California was burning, we sent resources and manpower to help. Unfortunately, we’ve dropped the ball on defence spending but historically, Canada has played an outsized role in world wars and our special forces remain elite (we have some of the world’s best snipers). It is insane that there are conversations where any discussion of threats arises at all (of course we know that we are economically and militarily dwarfed by the U.S.). Such things used to be in the realm of satire (such as the South Park bits that have been referenced in this thread). Reality has become so absurd that satire has become impossible.

The trucker convoy took over half of our Capital city and was allowed to stay for weeks on end without any sort of permits. They threatened and shut down local businesses and people. Their accounts were frozen when it was uncovered that a large portion of the money they were receiving to fund their little camp out was coming from foreign donors.

And actually, I didn’t mention the trucker convoy. I was talking about people driving around to this day with Fuck Trudeau stickers on their pickup trucks.

I live in Saskatchewan, and the Liberals don't hold a single Saskatchewan seat in Parliament and Trudeau is generally hated here. There are significant regional differences in Canada to the extent that Trudeau's last few election wins have elicited plenty of talk of Alberta and Saskatchewan succeeding from Canada. Because of our first past the post system, the Liberals won a minority government in the last 2 elections despite losing the popular vote to the Conservatives both times - and they won before a single vote was counted in the West. I put that out there lest you judge us as being all or even mostly on board with Trudeau.

I just watched Trump's pre super bowl interview on Fox. He was blabbering again about absorbing Canada because they're taking advantage of us on trade. Doesn't anybody around this nimrod tell him that Canada has like 40 million people, so naturally they will buy less from us than we buy from them? He's an embarrassment to the country.

4d chess inception, make things more expensive, so someone else retaliates and makes things even more expensive, then pay a bunch while everyone feeds their government's general find while thinking they're absolutely brilliant for it, then later on remove the tariffs eventually and look like a champ because everyone's memory is about ten seconds long, and corporations keep the pricing where it's at because prices rarely go backwards, then reap the record margins/profits like corps have been doing. Win-win.....as long as you ignore all the losing.

Naa, we're just not in a cult.

Calling republican's "part of a cult" is the biggest hypocritical thing I've heard from the Dems lately. When the dems are LITERALLY performing Satanic rituals, trying to mutilate children, killing babies in the womb, force sexual orientation on children in elementary school, and getting Satan statues made.. STFU clowns. You are the reason this country is embarrassing. We need to get back our real roots of moral. And the Dems have zero morals.

Idk talking to the guys at the mills and they seem pretty happy about it. 25% brings it back to being about even on making steel and aluminum here vs sending scrap to China, Canada and Mexico and importing it back. Think about that outside of Trumps 1st 4 years its always been significantly cheaper to send scrap to China and ship it back here isn't that a little ass backwards. We need new mills, aluminum production and a couple more oil refinerys then fill in the rest with import to fill any shortages.

Yes, the mills are definitely happy.  And in the long run it will probably be ok.  The problem for the construction industry will be project financing in the turmoil of commodity fluctuations.   So it goes beyond the mills.   We are all just going to have to wait and see what happens.

Buddy if you think everyone that votes blue is into that, you've been force feeding yourself right wing propaganda for far too long. Its not healthy. Same with lefties that assume all R's are Nazis.

You're also being purposefully disingenuous on literally every point you made. Acting like that doesn't do anyone any good. Just divides everyone further.

The US is the 3rd largest steel producer in the world. We import about 25% of what we use. Very little of that comes from China. One of the things that Trump said in the Fox News interview was that we have these trade deficits that are bad. Either he doesn't know what he is talking about or he his placating the low information citizens that automatically think that trade deficits are bad. We might very well be importing alloys from Canada that we either don't or won't produce ourselves. Maybe they are better at some specific product. I don't know but our steel industry is not in jeopardy because of cheap imports.
