Perhaps we could trade - the US could send Biden up to replace Turdeau and, instead of Canada being parked the the edge of a cliff, he could just go ahead and gas it over.

We’ll find out. I’m hoping the next government can write competent tax legislation and at least pretend to care about spending. I don’t think Poilievre is anything like Trump. I can’t say I’m crazy about him but the Liberals need a time out. I’d be happy to see a Conservative minority - keep them in check somewhat. I subscribe to the adage that governments and diapers both should be changed frequently, and for the same reason.

The overlap between conservatives and Republicans is almost 100% though. I'd rather see the ndp in, they seem to be the only viable alternative. Green party actually seems to have the best leaders and policies, but no chance in hell of them ever forming government.

Unless they can resurrect Jack Layton - one of the finest men we’ve seen in politics in a long time - the NDP has no chance.

Definitely, no one's come close since. At least we have a 3 party (3.5 if you include the bloc) so it's rare any one party gets too much control.

I wish sometimes we could just start from scratch and create a fiscally conservative yet socially liberal party.

It will add another 2% on top of the 4.5% per annum CPI increase over 5 years.

Eh, not really. Just slapped a new sticker on it. But still not really what I'm looking for.  Looking for a party with a little less racism and misogyny.

My bad - should have looked up the change since 2021

Screenshot 20250202-221713-165

So that estimate would be 5% per annum correct? However, the CPI increase under Biden's 4 years was an outlier from recent trends, so at this point it's difficult to predict whether it would be 2% on top of 5%, or 2% on top of 2%, or something else.

Is there any country that has a political party that actually is fiscally conservative but socially liberal, and doesn't use that just as a catchy phrase?

2% from the starting point. So if you're adding 2% inflation due to (anything really) it would not be retroactively applied. So let's say current inflation rates have returned to normal - in Canada they are currently around 1.8%. You would add the 2% to that figure giving you expected inflation of 3.8%.

Nit sure to be honest. But I'd like to see one that stays the hell out of our personal lives, keeps the unions under control, simplifies the tax code while increasing what the rich pay, makes smart investments around the environment and moves us away from oil so that we can benefit economically, and punishes the hell out of repeat offenders.

Unfortunately the ndp is too pro-union, the liberals dropped the ball on smart investments, and the conservatives spend way too time worrying about the weirdo that wants to cut his pecker off and not enough time worrying about the fact the economy tanks every time they're in office.

So just about everything you described would fall under either libertarian, moderate or conservative in the US.

1st exception - increase the taxes the rich pay

There is a huge difference between taxing the rich and helping the poor, but tax the rich is a nice liberal talking point because it gets votes but the liberals don't have to do anything else, they just blame the other side for blocking their efforts. As was pointed out in the 2016 US presidential debate, to the detriment of Hillary Clinton, it's not going to happen because they all have wealthy donors, and they aren't going to bite the hand that feeds them.

There are currently over 300,000 open trade jobs in the US. How many liberal celebrities have you heard of that are offering scholarships to lower income and minority folks to get into those trades? Seems like there should be a bunch given the way they talk, but the reality doesn't match. It's much less work to blame billionaires, and it keeps their money in their own pockets.

2nd exception - makes smart investments around the environment and moves us away from oil so that we can benefit economically

Climate change alarmism is out of hand, and so is net zero. The climate models used are full of manufactured adjustments to make them look like an expected result, because the limited formulas that can be used don't produce results that fit the desired narrative. Nuclear, which is by far the cleanest energy source we have, has largely been ignored. I won't go on ranting about this, but the malinformation spread to fear monger is just awful. All it's really gotten us is more expensive energy, which is the wrong way to go if you want to get people to be interested in the future.

But it's never really been about the climate anyway.

Conservatives, at least in the US, aren't worried about the weirdo who wants to cut his pecker off. They are worried about that weirdo teaching their children, or getting preferential treatment for jobs based on being that weirdo and not on merit, or the completely irresponsible mental health care that only affirms that weirdo's lifestyle, or that weirdo brainwashing their children.

Perhaps you meant fiscally conservative, socially libertarian?

Let's address your two exceptions - tax the rich   and use that money to lower taxes on middle income, invest in education, and make smart investments around the environment*

l thought you would have been able to fill in the gaps there, my apologies for giving you so much credit. It is very impressive that you recognize how broken the us system is, that's great work.

And for the second exception, no it is not overblown, the models have been tested and refined and if anything are too conservative.   Republicans and conservatives tend to be very .. Lazy maybe isn't the right word.... Old fashioned? ... not quite ... Let's call it set in their ways. They don't want to make changes that require any effort on their part, but call it a 'scam' because  its a nice conservative talking point because it gets votes but the conservativs don't have to do anything else, they just blame the other side.  But it's never been about the energy anyway.  But yes nuclear is the way to go in my opinion. So why not invest in nuclear instead of digging holes in the ground?  Because it's not about the energy, it's about the conservatives staying rich.

And I'm glad to hear you're agreement on the last point and that it's so clear that we need to keep religion away from children and to do away with the brainwashing they experience.

And then you're obviously on board with filling those 300k trades positions with people who I don't know,  might have a different skin color, genitalia, etc? Put in a little effort there to not be assholes and we might just be able to find a few good workers lol.

Oh what a surprise - another broken liberal with a fear of both religion, and doing your own research instead of swallowing the malinformation. Lacking in reading comprehension too I see. You misunderstood every single point I was making.

Fiscally conservative hah!! You want others to pay the bills for your own mistakes and bad choices, as most liberals often do.

If you were really socially liberal, then someone else being a billionaire wouldn't bother you. Instead you have outed yourself as jealous.

Question for you.

What did you do as your fulltime job before you became AKW''s little fanboy, chasing his every post, every day?

You're just a creepy little stalker now.

He's one of the few folks around here with a little crush on me.

It's cute.

I’ll straight up tell you, i fucking despise you AKW… People like-minded with you are self-loathing weak people, who somehow think they’re so sophisticated. But you aren’t sophisticated, and have allowed centuries of human rights to be eroded in a short manner of time, in the name of social superiority. But this so-called social superiority, and you were all hoodwinked by control seaking sociopaths masquerading as socialists.

Unfortunately the ndp is too pro-union, the liberals dropped the ball on smart investments, and the conservatives spend way too time worrying about the weirdo that wants to cut his pecker off and not enough time worrying about the fact the economy tanks every time they're in office.

I work for a union, I was not in a union for the first 16 years of working. I finally gave up and joined one because corporate companies kept screwing me over. My last company paid me less with less benefits while charging the customer $50 an hour more than my union company. That's right, non union shop was $200 an hour, union shop is $150. A lot of unions are good for people, some are crazy, but there's a lot of them that are good to have. Remember, without unions companies would still be charging you, the money would just be going to the CEO and shareholders.

The US has been screwed over and taken advantage of by every ally and trading partner we’ve had from the beginning, to the point that it had just become normalized standard practice.  Somebody comes along and points out the obvious and questions it and lots of people are losing their shit.  Meanwhile, our economy and debt are so out of control that our own congress won’t even do a budget and just runs the money printing presses WFO.  Sounds like a grrreat plan to me…🤦

It's funny but the US thinks we are the greatest country on earth, but Trump and all his supporters make comments like this one. Like whiny babies we are now playing the victim card. "Why is everyone picking on us?" This doesn't sound like something a great country would say. But, then again, a country is only as good as our leader.

Well, that’s not the standard joke though!

And it is just a joke obviously. Everything I’ve seen about the French military is that they were fierce as phuck but way outnumbered and out equipped. The accounts of the remaining soldiers later in the war are amazing.

If you take oil and natural gas out of the equation, we bring in about $58 billion more from the USA than the US from Canada. Canada is dependant in the US for more or less everything, even stuff coming from Asia mostly comes into US ports and supply chain forst (think Wal-Mart, etc). And the oil bought from us is usually at a pretty heavy discount, upgraded on the Gulf Coast, and sold on from there at a pretty nice profit.

That is an interesting statistic. I’m still confident that Canada will really be hurting with this Needless trade war. But , it does bring to light the fact that I think a lot of small American business will also be hurt by this situation also.As a Canadian that lives close to the border, myself and my family at least  twice a month are in Buffalo either shopping, visiting friends or racing in New York State. Even in the winter spending a lot of weekends in Ellicottville, New York skiing or heading to switchback in Pennsylvania for indoor Moto. I have shared countless good times with other Moto families from New York State through the years. It really does hurt to say that that might be over now.

What I'd like to know is how exactly we've all taken advantage of the U.S.? Trump makes it sound like the U.S. having a trade deficit with other countries implies that the U.S. is being ripped off. But how would that work? At a most basic level, if you and I trade goods, and the goods I give you are worth more than the goods I receive in return for my goods, I'm in a deficit position, AND I've been ripped off. But the "ripped off" part goes away if, as is the case in the real world of international trade, we are each trading goods for money. And it doesn't really make any sense to say that Canada trades with the U.S.. Rather, Canadians trade with Americans. If we have a resource rich economy and you have a primarily information and services economy, then it could be that you're buying massive amounts of things like oil, electricity, and grains from us while our relatively tiny population couldn't possibly buy as much from American suppliers, but nobody is being ripped off. Trump sees trade as a zero sum game - there's a big pie, and the more pie we get, the less he gets. But trade can actually be symbiotic - if done right, we may be making more pies. Trump is a bit of a simpleton in this respect.

None of this it to say Canada has been a perfect neighbor. We need to spend more on national defense. This is an area where the U.S. has a legitimate grievance with Canada. I don't know about border security, but of course we have an obligation to ensure security - as does the U.S. Tariffs could be a tool used to get Canada to smarten up in various areas. But the "we're being ripped off in trade" nonsense is being uncritically lapped up by people who have never spent 30 seconds thinking about the mechanics of trade.
