How important is it to win a 250 title if your guaranteed a 450 ride? Seems like it can go either way - some 250 champs never get a 450 championship and some 450 Champs could have prob got a ride / championship without it.
Seems like in 80s the guys would race 2 or even 3 classes at the same time so a 125 championship wasn’t as big of a deal?
Thoughts?
All the top 450 guys were 250 champs
Not all the 250 champs are top 450 guys
Outdoor title is prestigious. Regional sx title is profitable.
JMB didn’t win a 125 championship in America before winning the premier class.
Albertyn won premier class outdoors and nothing in the tiddlers.
All eyes on Prado.
Both matter, especially the supercross title. Anybody trying to make the argument that a 250 SX title doesn’t matter clearly has an ulterior motive and I’m pretty sure I know what it is

Too much weight put in 250 SX title. Look at J mart.
Love me some jMART, but you've proved a point. Two national titles in a row didn't get him a shot on a factory 450.
450 MX / SX > 250 MX >>> 250 SX
Unless we're talking about MXGP transplants it's hard to imagine too many people now having 450 success if they aren't title contender against half the 250 field.
Stepping stone
He was guaranteed the Honda 450 ride in 19 if he won the title but he got hurt.
Then he had a chance in 2020 to get the 2021 seat, but Chase pretty much ended his chances.
He also had a chance at Star, but they screwed him so he left and went to Club
. He should have taken Mitch’s offer over Star.
It’s a proven fact that if you can’t win a 250 title, you can’t win on a 450.
Factories want guys who can run up front, not tenth place guys.
The higher ups that wanted Prado thinks he will be winning sx next year, I think they are high.
A1 watching him in the race situation, he reminded me of tortelli.... and I'm a fan of both guys.
Title contender outdoors, for sure.
Is he a title contender now though? He had shoulder surgery this week, that a lengthy process. He will be going into outdoors a bit unprepared against a well prepared Eli, Chase, and Jett. Beating those three healthy would be tough without the injury.
I think the 450 world champions rule is stupid and needs changing, because in all honesty, after watching him at A1 and San Diego, he’s a bit of a hazard. If Freeze was doing what he was doing, Vital would’ve wanted his head.
Yes, you're right with the injury. He'd be up against it anyways with all new tracks, nasty midwest heat.
Not sure he'd want to ride the 250 even if the rules were different though.
It’s important to have a champion’s mindset. The best way to develop that is by being a champion.
Ask Colt Nichols
It’s a tough one. You could reasonably think that a 450 MXGP could learn SX well enough with some time to be at least safe. On the other hand it happens so rarely (MXGP champion moving to the US) that the evidence is scant.
In any case one crash is not enough to draw any conclusions - all the top 450 guys have had at least one SX related injury that has shortened a season. If it becomes a recurring event then it’s a problem.
Justin Brayton had a 450 career some people would die for and doesn't even have a 250 win, spent several years as a factory rider with multiple podiums and a win, so 450 success can be had without 250 success but it's rare
