Every sport in your nearest city with millions of fans and very exciting live games/matches are completely silent.  I have only owned 2 strokes for the last 20 years, so I understand the thought process, BUT it’s not the sound that keeps us riding.  It’s riding areas and accessibility.

if you think the excitement of a sport is predicated on how loud it is, you might want to rethink why our sport is the most exciting

There is a reason most professional motorsports allow open exhaust with no mufflers, motorsports fans like engine noise. F1, Nascar, MotoGP etc. It's part of the experience.

They could make different sound effects packs. Like bubbles, or farts, or a screaming goat.

Each rider could have their own signature sound effect...

Jett - Jetsons car sounds
Hunta - clown horn
Anderson - bong rips
Ferrandis - "Oui, oui, oui"
Webb - open mic so you hear him cussing at Roczen
Roczen - meditation track reminding him to breathe
Barcia - permanent rev limiter
Plessinger - Harley sounds "Wampa!"
Friese - "Flight of the Valkyries" plays

I can't stop laughing at the post about how ball sports are silent and millions watch them as a comparison.   😂

No sound, no smell....no excitement.  Period.    Just look at the youtube videos of e-moto races and tell me otherwise.

Moto spectating is dead to me if it comes to that.

I like the sound of motocross.

Here's a counterpoint though, Tour de France is a big vehicle racing event without motor sound. Most of the bikes don't even have motors on them.

Well as family of enthusiasts there is no way I’m dropping $100 let alone $500 to watch an EV SX event.   If it ever comes to this my family will transition to MTBs

I really think all of the EV pushers in here need to attend a Top Fuel drag strip and experience 11,000HP sounds and vibrations. Then compare that to the E-drag version.

Its embarrassing they even try to push EV anything. Leave electric motors to R/C cars where they belong...as toys.

I've said it before in other threads, if you absolutely have to have sound, it's possible without just a speaker playing a 2 stroke sound or whatever, it'll just take a little creative engineering. Just make a resonating chamber that either mics the internal motor noise and amplifies it into the chamber, or just picks it up naturally, and you'll get a louder, meaner tone. You could even customize the shape of the chamber like a cone pipe for a different tone.

Anyone who's worked in factories with big motors will tell you, hearing a 800hp motor spool up is bone chilling/butthole puckering.

Hahahaha maybe screeching tires and car crash noises for Friese  😄

Sound is an important part of the thrill, for sure. Go to a MotoGP race if you don't believe me.

However, I think this car sounds amazing! If they could get e-bikes to sound something like this, then I'm all for it:

The sound is such a huge component to me in any Motorsport. I grew up around circle track racing, and then MX and nothing puts a smile on my face like hearing a well tuned engine hitting a lick. I’m not a huge drag guy, but I did get to experience some Top Fuel stuff last year and if you’ve never been to watch it’s an absolute must for a Motorhead. The vibrations those things put through your chest is just insane.

I went to my first NBA game last week. The music doesn’t stop at all through the whole game. They have a dj courtside. Wasn’t a fan.

Would expect e-moto to follow suit. Lurch yelling through the whole motos with Disturbed cranked to 11 is what I envision.

Have you ever been to a TOOL show? There isn't a person in the world that could absorb both at the same time. TOOL is enough of a sensory overload, let alone a race at the same time! hahaha

Almost silent?  Come on now.

Hockey?

The crack of a baseball bat hitting a fastball?

The sound of a linebacker hitting a running back?

Fuck 4 stroke noise. If y’all were arguing over 2 strokes I could see it, but even the best 4 stroke ever made sounds like shit imo.

We are not Nascar, F1, or motoGP. Our sport is wayyyyyy closer to skating, bmx, and mtn biking than it is to any traditional motorsport.

Stop gatekeeping and let them all race together. Would have been 10000 times more interesting if they just let the vargs in with the rest and we see where they really stack up. Most likely friese and peters beat them anyways and it just leads to further discussion.

The fans that would leave because of no more noise aren’t that into it in the first place obviously.

This is funny.  You’re implying that you’d quit the sport altogether if the only factor that changes is the noise lol

It reinforces exactly what I said about Mx folks being unable to adapt to change and likely killing the sport then wondering how the sport died when there’s a big EV transition.

To be fair the AMA does let electrics and ICE race together in one race per round in AMA Arenacross (non-point scoring "clash for cash"). Plus US Sprint Enduro and GNCC in other kind of racing.

The AMA are tipping their toes very carefully but I don't expect any major revelations from this "experiment" on US soil. It's been going on for a year in other countries (AX, SX, MX, all kinds of enduro...).

And mixed class does not change sound much.

Kinda funny - my kid actually raced a Mini-E in a hare scramble series.  We absolutely loved the bike but it didn’t like cold temps or deep sand - wouldn’t last the 30 min.

i was implying I wouldn’t pay to watch EV racing iId watch MTB shit on YT instead for free.

I would have no issue off-roading a E bike if they could make one with range - but they don’t..

BTW - do you drive a cyber truck 🤪

You can keep MX if it goes full electric. Humans are motivated off sensory stimulation and for some the sounds and smells are just as pertinent to the sport as a good set of whoops. If I wanted to hear a chain clacking and an Electric motor whirring around while enjoying the outdoors I would’ve picked up an eMTB. I’m sure there will be plenty to carry the sport if/when it goes full electric, but it’s just not for me.

There will still be plenty of noise, you won't be able to hear a thing in the pits. Ever pit next to a guy with an Alta or Varg ?  So much for bs'ing with your buddy after the race. The pits will be interesting, kids screaming at the top of their lungs "CAN YOU SIGN MY NUMBER PLATE" ? and the riders will be cupping their hands by their ears like an old man saying "WHAT ? WHAT DID YOU SAY" ? 😆

Yes there will be plenty of noise. You won’t be able to hear anything because of the 100+ generators running full time charging all the bikes up.

Harbor freight sells cheap quiet generators. Friend of mine had one running at a race and I didn't realize it was even on.

I'd love an electric bike to add to the stable. But I don't think I'll ever go spectate an electric race.

That's a little bit unreal, definitely different, still racing.
