Brad Lackey replica helmet

Hi, just thought some of the older forum members might like this Brad Lackey replica I painted recently. It's for a collector here in the UK who managed to get hold of a very good condition original Arai MX80. I started racing in '81 age 11 and this was the first "custom" scheme I had ever seen, and it's stuck in my mind ever since. My dad bought me Brad's book "techniques, training and tactics" to give me some tips as a novice and Brad was one of my first MX heroes, so it was great to finally paint a tribute to him.

Very nice! American hot rod style, "Good as Gold". Brad is a good dude, I still see him at the races in NorCal. He's a lifer for sure.

I remember those gold pants! I got his book in '81 which had a lot about his career too and the history of the sport, so when I followed his '82 season it meant a lot to see him finally get that world title, as I had read that book from cover to cover about 100 times. He was the first rider I was a "fan" of, along with Dave Thorpe because he rode a mudguard-numberplate KX like me 😄

Beautiful work! And if I remember correctly this was the style he was wearing during his world championship season. Thanks for sharing

Was that a 465, or did he run a version of the '83 500 engine that year?

Good question. Info was scarce back then and since it was about the time I applied for my patent on dirt, my memory is a little fuzzy on the subject.

Even so, I'm not sure there is a definitive answer:

I got Brad to sign a photo of him in that helmet and pants. I have it hanging above my work bench along with a Joel Robert, Torsten Hallman and Rodger DeCoster signed photos. All my heros growing up.

Jason, you may recall painting the Bailey replica JT ALS-2 as pictured in my user avatar. The Lackey helmet looks just as stunning. Great job!
