So was Carter Gray (65cc) DQ'd for jumping the finish?

If I recall, he only hit it a couple times in practice. Lots of kids went for it in practice, and most were coming up short and hitting hard.

Only one kid I saw hit it several times and hit it clean, talon Hinson and he was on a ktm. He hit it in the main also and was docked from 18th to 20th.

On the ktm debate, there were 6 kids on ktm/gas gas in the top 10. 5 out of the 6 were on the old 2023 or older bikes, since the new 2024 plus ones suck.

I was thinking more on the lines of they never mentioned the brand once that I remember. The corporate fix so to speak. Not referring to the actual performance differences.

Typical Supercross, don't fight, don't clean people out, don't do the jumps we built for you, but then they will re-air the action from those events over and over again because it's exciting. How many times have people ben insanely stoked that the 65's were jumping the big stuff? That's the alure of having to watch mini bikes at a pro event. Then you dock them for doing exactly what they are there to do. Completely ass-backwards.

But the jump was spectacular, and I bet it makes highlight reels.

Honestly this thread is obnoxious.  Kid jumped a huge hit and you guys are acting like the police.  They told them 10 minutes before the gate dropped not to hit after they were allowed to all weeekend. the kid said screw it I’m sending it.  He accepted the consequences but is an actual ripper so he just went all in.  Still the winner.  Still a legend.

The other kids were jumping it in practice and the rider in P2 had the rest of the track down better. He also cleared the finish line double better than the rest in practice. He most likely would have won had he not followed the rules as well and jumped the finish line. The right call was made.

Wait unitl youre a parent & something/someone presents themselves as negligent, your kid gets hurt and you're angry about it.

I’m a parent and almost 40 years old.  My child’s decision is their own and so are her consequences.

That could happen on any section or any of the doubles they were allowed to jump.  Maybe having 65s race a full scale supercross track isn’t the best idea in the first place?

AMA should/could have added a tough-block chicane between the wall-jump and the finish line jump.  You simply can't leave a straightaway leading up to a jump and expect kids not to send it.

It’s definitely not the best idea. Anybody can be seriously injured on any track at any time. If you don’t think that finish line jump was more dangerous than other parts of the track for the 65’s, then I don’t know what to tell you. At that point, I think you’d be contradicting just for the sake of being contradictory.

Who lets off first?  Two kids railing for the finish line, coming up to the finish line jump.  That's what we need going through their mind, when do I let off?  Not letting off, clear the gap and get DQ'd.   Or let off just enough to not clear the gap and pile drive into the uphill of the lander.

If this was a rule set out before the race they should have the Red Cross Flags out to not jump to remind the kids do not jump they're in a battle and going off instinct!

They just needed a couple of tuff blocks in the right spot. Not so difficult.

If that is the worry then they shouldn’t be on a fucking professional track with bikes capable of clearing the obstacles.

That was crazy. That water is nasty, very cold with strong current. As usual he made it look easy, but that was sketchy.

Not sure why you are so angry, but I already said in another post that I don’t think it’s a good idea.

Thats a valid point.

So is the fact that a 10 year old kid can do half the jumps on a 65.

Not having a kid wad himself on prime time TV is a good call IMO,  and penalising someone for doing something they were told not to, doesnt seem harsh to me.

65's are not built for that .

British lad John Slade #288 did it in practice, first one , so i was told,  but his bike wasnt running right and he sacked it off.

AMA wouldn't DQ'd in that circumstance by the rules.  They didn't clear the finish line during the race when it was prohibited; race was over. 🧐

It was cool to see him jumping it. But if they told them Not to jump it.  He should have stopped jumping it.

In my mind its not much different than a rider jumping during a red cross flag . Or cutting the track, breaking any other rule that is in place. Its that simple . The rule was No jumping it.  He stuck out since he broke the rule. Like others have said there were other kids that jumped it and I'm sure many more that could of or would have jumped it IF they had not been told not to.The AMA has put poles up to stop racers from cutting corners by jumping off and back onto the track in  pro classes.

Look back at last year when there were multiple Supermini guys crashing on the same jump.  I think it was 2 or 3 of the top 4 that went down last year.  Not a good look. That race was pretty much an exhibition race right?  a 1 off race that was for show.   Perhaps being used to get some kids watching the race to see and think, "wow they make bikes small enough for me to ride" . And perhaps try and get parents to buy kids bikes and get them into racing. No need to have a higher risk jump. I really think that this is why they made the rule.

I understand that these kids are some of the best. But they are still just kids. I have no problem with limiting the jumps they can do.  They were not the main attraction. The track was built for the big guys and these guys were filler. What if he landed on somebody and they were badly injured?  Fair races, Arenacross, lots of races will not allow racers of a certain skill or bike size to jump certain jumps.

Again they are just kids.  I think its cool that many of them have the skills. And I remember jumping a jump at a local race after seeing Jimmy Decotis doing it on a 65. But I feel like in this case they got it right . If the 65's were the main attraction at the race, than I would say change the track or let them jump. But they were not.  Crazy that this is even an issue.

I reckon the kid who finished second should be getting a heap of credit. It must be hard for a young kid to be there with the leader only to see him double away each time in this section and still not lose his composure. He deserved to be battling for the win and couldn't because not everyone was playing by the same rules.

Either way, all of these kids are awesome little riders and got their taste of riding in the big show. Good for them.

The fastest qualifier, Chase Brennan, was on KTM and he was also doing the finish double in qualifying. He got a bad start but caught Carter before the finish line. Carter looks back and sees Chase and then sends the finish line jump which gave him a 2 second lead again. Chase catches back up to him again but then the race was over. They interviewed Chase after the race and he said they were told not to jump it so he figured it'd be smarter not to so he wouldn't get penalized and I guess he wasn't wrong!

Not everything is a conspiracy. Also as far as KTM panic goes, the kid was wearing an RMArmy hat and Suzuki T-Shirt in his post-race press conference interview since he's now signed with them for two years on 85's. Grinning

That’s what I saw…Chase Brennan had the speed and would’ve made the pass if Gray didn’t do it. As a racer Brennan made the right choice. Best race of the day, all those kids are ripping!

have not read all the replies but the few I did were outraged over the kid being docked 2 positions for jumping a double he was instructed pre-race not to double.

These kids are 8-10 years old? 65cc minibike. flip the coin and imagine if the kid came up short and broke his neck? The mob would then be crying for the AMA to be tarred and feathered.

Somebody remind me why the AMA instituted the Futures program?

The other rider who got docked jumped on the checkered flag, so there goes that theory.

They shouldnt have 65-85s on these tracks or on the broadcast. The day a 10 year old dies on live television will be the day Sx/MX dies.

I enjoyed the 65cc race. I hope they televise these races more often as it was exiting.

That said, the comments that he was warranted to continue jumping after being warned not to by the folks who create the rules come off as bad as the comments on the 'net that Tyreek Hill didn't do anything wrong. C'mon man!

Alter the damn track if you don’t want them jumping something. What an idiotic position to put a child into.
