Chad Reed stated he lost a million dollars a year running his team. The sponsors that would pay the Deegans to run a team would probably still pay the Deegans even if they were on someone else's team, probably the same amount or close to it. Makes no sense.
Lot of wild speculation going on in this thread.
Deegan on a Ducati!
you can blame Reed for his 09 stint for why riders insurance and pay outs have changed. Reed walked away with a 4million championship bonus pay out from insurance

Not really a good analogy. Racing is not a wealth generating activity, so you have to ask yourself where does the money come from? It's mainly from three sources - OEM's, sponsors and wealthy private individuals/organisations that want to finance a race team.
If you want to start your own race team, then you don't have access to OEM money so that leaves you with sponsors and private team owners. Private team owners aren't doing it for any financial reason, so sooner or later when their interest wanes or the disposable cash runs out they withdraw. In any case they usually aren't going to pay any more than a factory and most times it's way less.
That leaves sponsor money. It's not unreasonable to think that for most teams and riders that sponsor in MX/SX has already reached saturation level; highly unlikely that some hitherto unknown cashed up sponsor is going to enter the sport (and not at the expense of existing sponsors).
I guess if the Deegans are contemplating their own team it would come down to whether they their goal is winning or making money. Or maybe it's a matter of controlling their own destiny, who knows?
A guy like Jett if he continues on his current path i.e. winning a lot for a factory team, will be a very wealthy individual by the time he's done, perhaps the richest rider in the history of the sport. History shows that going out on your own isn't the way to make that sort of money as a rider.
The OEMs usually pay the private teams though. Maybe not Chad, but JGR, MC, RCH I think all got money from the OEMs. MC was pulling 600k from Yamaha in 02 for an SX only deal. Who knows what the Bud Light $ was.
LOL. Oh, more than a couple are here—-not under their ‘names’ (unlike SM12). Same for wrenches. Some are excellent at trolling.
Yeah but as a rider you probably aren't getting the same money as a full factory rider.
Hopefully make more money? The oonly reason to go do your own thing is to make a lot more money. Bbeing your own man isn't aalways what its cracked up to be.
Nothing is guaranteed...you dont know for sure if you will make more money UNTILL YOU TAKE THE RISK to find out.
Risk...is what you accept when you forge out on your own.
Was mentioned on pulpshow this week
Larocco was one of the owners of Amsoil Honda? Honestly, I never knew that.
You lost me at, CC.
And the harm that does anybody is............................?
Let people talk & chat even if its chatting shit. Thats why the forum exists. Leave em alone.
Everyone in this sport. Fans and industry people gripe about not enough teams and all this talent out there. Now one of the top guys in sport is contemplating starting his own team and giving a spot to another guy to help his career as well and also creating more jobs in the industry. Yet everyone wants to talk negatively of it. This industry is comical and funny at times. SMH
There's no money in a race team
It’s interesting because a lot people on the board dislike Deegan. If those people think starting a team is such a terrible idea, you’d think they’d be all for him “tanking” his career/bank account by doing it?
Just about every example cited shows that owning and operating a race team is an endeavor that rarely brings a return. I think a lot of the criticism and speculation is warranted. It’d be a cool concept, I just don’t see it being as financially viable as some might think.
Pit Row
Sow's Ear X Deegan = Silk Purse
It might be if Deegan can find an outside sponsor with deep pockets.
You can eliminate a lot of the risk before taking the leap. Before spending a penny on the program they will have commitments from the OEM for money, equipment, technical support and training facility, commitments from title and associate team sponsors for certain dollar amounts, commitments from gear companies, casual wear, shoes, bikes, etc. Less certain but still considered are things like social media or other media activations. Take that support and revenue and subtract the known expenses of running a team - insurance, hauler, personnel, travel, etc. If the difference is more than Yamaha/Star can pay him in salary and bonus it makes sense to have his own team. If that number is less than Yamaha/Star can pay him in salary and bonus it does not make sense to have his own team.
Steady on, top 2??? Not even close to top 5. But maybe in USA.
Of course I'm talking about the USA. The nationals as presented by NBC is a product for America, sorry Euros, as international as the riders are, NBC isn't producing the races for you. Sorry I didn't qualify my statement originally.
Valentino Rossi is way more famous internationally, but in the USA if you ask a random person about famous motorcyclists, they're probably only going to say one of two names. Pastrana and Deegan and it's not even close.
If Evel Knievel was still alive and at an MX race you bet your ass NBC would put him on camera too.
Edited to add: I'd also bet that anyone who knows who Stevan Everts or Antonio Cairoli is also knows who Travis Pastrana is, but I wouldn't assume the opposite is true.
Grondahl wanting back in the team owner game?
I could see he and Brian doing something.
Is anyone really talking negatively? To me the main discussion in this thread is whether it would be beneficial for a rider like Deegan to create his own racing team. Any negative comments are just speculating that it wouldn't make financial sense for him.
No judgements were made friend, just an observation that little of this thread is factual and that it is just wild speculation.
Two of Brian’s sponsors are Ford and Can Am.
That's common on most threads. I think that most people are just presenting their reasons for why they think a team would or would not work, or how its possible for it to work well.
The comparison of working for somebody and starting Your own thing is a perfect one. So many people think that working for a big company and doing the job well is more of a solid long-term thing. That you can count on being there. But the best bet, is doing Your own thing and putting the work in. If You do than Your own business will be the more solid safer long term way of making a living. When You work for somebody else they can always fire you. Go bankrupt, sell out, etc. When You work for yourself , Its more up to you if you stick around or not.
Honda ,Kawasaki, I'm sure others have also let guys go at the top of their game. With his own team he could change a manufacturer and keep his team manager and personal. And have more control of who is involved.
I guess it really depends on a couple things. If They want to do their own team, and if they have sponsors willing to put up the money.
Like most silly season type threads. The only thing that is what I would say factual is that there has been talk of Deegan doing his own team. The why he might, or why he might not is really only known by the Deegan's.
Chances are some of the basic why or why not they end up doing what they do , may be one of the reasons that people have speculated about.
I did not see anybody making claims that anything is 100% solid info from the Deegan's. I know I made sure to make it clear I was throwing ideas around.
Maybe somebody can post a Captain Obvious meme for you....
They aren't going to do it unless its a money making venture, not when you can make millions when you get to the 450, and have a team take care of everything. Chad's situation and MC's were both different in that reed wanted off the kawi, and was sick, thus probably not all that many big money offers at the time. MC was at the very tail end of a storied career.
