Lower sound levels is coming into multiple markets. 111db before, 112 after race.

114 today in most markets. I can't see any 2025 besides kawi 450 that can meet the 114 even in stock setup.

Whats the solution for existing bikes? Specially one generation "older frames" where OEMs won't release any kind of updated silencer or end cap that fits?

Rag in the airbox is not a solution, just to preempt.

Aftermarket exhaust companies are gonna love this!

My Beta 300 RX is pretty dang quiet for a 2 stroke.  Lowering sound levels may not save the sport but won’t hurt in urban areas.

We all act like this is flipping rocket science. I am all for it. Besides the damn things sound like me on the commode after a long night of IPA's and Taco Bell at 2 am.

This is gonna affect exhaust systems and air boxes. Hell, it already has.

How loud is a stock pipe? I still have a stock pipe on my 350 and have buddies with FMFs and other pipes and they are substantially louder so its not like its rocket science to get an aftermarket pipe similar sound levels.

Theres a reason OEM packing lasts 100 hours and an FMF lasts 15.

AMA.  Isn’t a quieter bike going to be more dangerous? Just asking for a friend.

I don’t blame them. It’s less of an issue with 450s because they get lugged and ridden in lower, thus quieter RPM ranges, but 40 250fs wound the fuck out for 35 minutes can really make some intense noise.

If you are lucky you will pass a 114db sound check with a modern 4 stroke (kawi 450 2025 excluded, it will pass). We have had brand new 250 4t with 3h on them, fail sound control.

2t normally not a problem.

But 4t below 114?

There are very specific instructions for it. Angle, distance, calibration of meter. Even weather affect it but normally taken less notice to.

Everybody is going to have to dump their bikes next year. I doubt a silencer will be optimal, bikes will run like crap if you just tighten that part.

Optimally airbox, exhaust system and mapping needs to be updated and then you are talking about a whole new bike. Not great for reselling values. And where is everyone going to get their hands on all these new bikes?

These aren't sound regulations for new bikes, they are for racing bikes that participate in FIM events. Governments make sound regulations for new bikes.

Stock KTM 250f brand new is 116.

AMA guy once told me “the point of sound testing at SX is to slowly force the OEM’s to continue lowering the DB’s of stock bikes”

Make sense of that.

Motocross bikes are unregistered vehicles. It's not regulated by government. It's regulated by each countries own motor/motocross association and most of them follow FIM guidance, at some point. That's what is happening now, countries start to implement what FIM has proposed.

Yeah still dont understand why we need to have a sound spec for national, world and sx events same with fuel bs. I understand oems building bikes to keep local tracks and race scenes and local tracks not allowing excessively loud bikes for everday. But for the big once a year races always seemed more like lip service to the greenies then anything.

I guess I’m different than everyone on this. I wish they would make it lower. People say the bikes are too fast. Look at the 350 popularity. The main complaint with tracks getting closed is noise. Kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

I like two strokes as much as anyone. With that being said, factory 250fs sound awesome.

Everyone bitching about the bikes are too fast now. Well, a great way to slow them down is to drastically reduce sound levels. A bunged-up bike will be slower.

Think about where sound levels used to be. -6dB = 50% decrease in sound. So I'd "guess" we've already seen a decrease by 50% in years.

Sound has been the big proponent of track closures for a while so why sound surprised with the new limits?????

I hate big exhaust cans but I also hate how loud most moto bikes are.

Isn’t this the FIM? I thought we weren’t FIM anymore in SX.

Nothing worse than the dude at the track with no packing left in their fooper just rev bombing everywhere. Like, fucking maintain your bike.

Bring on the quieter exhausts! (And get off my lawn)

We race dirt bikes in the country.   Only reason I go to my local nationals are to have my ears bleed and smell the fumes. 🇺🇸🇺🇸 they are just slipping it in slowly to ease us into the e bike movement. Lowering the db’s by five does literally nothing.  Neighbors are going to complain until anything with two wheels are banned. Stop being so compliant and man up.

The sport was quieter before 4 strokes came along...

Those are FIM, not AMA.  Still should be quieter though and hope the AMA follows it too

1 decibal between before moto and after?

7/15/2024 9:33pm

...meanwhile you got all the airhorns around the track pushing out between 120 to 130dB. Make sense right?

An air horn typically produces a sound level of around 120 to 130 dB when measured at a distance of one meter. This level of loudness is comparable to a jackhammer or a gunshot. The powerful sound waves generated by an air horn can travel over long distances and effectively capture the attention of those nearby.

All the more reason to ban the bloody things (and chainsaws) from events, Boom.

We're at a ICE vehicle race, why the f**k do you want / feel the need to bring in something so Bloody objectionable - why? : because some people are Attention Whores / F**kwits, that's why.

Me I'd like to see sound levels lower. I make my own quiet mufflers so I can continue to ride in my local areas, without attracting attention / p**sing people off.

To me, the sort of sound that you'd hear from Enduro Muffler Equipped Husabergs / Huskies / Vertematis, years ago, was wonderful. Lovely sounding things, that weren't ear bleeding.

As for quieter bikes costing Power?

Well, as I've so often written over the years, when a company actually puts in the effort to make a (relatively) quiet exhaust, with Mega Power, well, pun very much intended : More Power to Them.

There's many ways to quieten bikes, that don't have to weigh a Tonne - I know, as I worked at one of Australia's best exhaust companies - well, I brought them into the Dirt Bike arena, after they had spent years regarding them as 'Chook Chasers'. It's a damned shame they eventually closed their doors, but, I think Sandy finally wanted to go back to Farming, the World from which he came.
